Agreed 100%, we dodged a massive bullet with Gallant. I’m not a fan of Ruff at all but he’s a placeholder coach, he was brought here to help the kids grow which he’s honestly done imo. Once the Devils are ready to be yearly contenders, he’ll be fired for a much better coach imo. We’ll look back on Ruff’s tenure once this team is competing and be glad we didn’t hire a rethread like Gallant who gushes over size over skill.

Yeah Ruff definitely has his dinosaur tendencies like playing Mikey too much at times (I don't know the numbers but he did seem to ease off of that as the year rolled on) and also of course Mason f***ing Geertsen but I still love what he's done for the young guys. If we want to move on for Cassidy then great. If we don't then I have to imagine there's at least somebody good available next year who fits us better to take over and take us to the next level.

Kakko is 2nd on the team in xGF% these playoffs. Only Chytil is above him and he's the only guy above 50% at 52.71%. Kakko's at 49.52%. Laf's at 47.13%. The Kid Line are the only one 3 above 45%.

Kakko is 3rd on the team in GF%. He only trails the top pair of Lindgren-Fox. Kakko is at 58.82%

The production of course is not spectacular but he's still 7th for their forwards in 5v5 P/60. He is above Panarin and Strome who are 8th and 9th.

The Kid Line when all 3 are together have a xGF% of 52.29%. When none of those 3 are on the ice the Rangers have a 36.56%

The Kid Line when all 3 are together have a GF% of 66.67%. When none of those 3 are on the ice the Rangers have a 52.08%

Idk maybe I'm just going coo coo here but to me this doesn't seem like a guy to scratch. Instead it seems like this line might be something you should've put some more faith into early on to see if they could handle a bigger workload against better competition.

Tampa is too much of a veteran team to fall into that trap, IMO.

Agreed, Maroon getting that powerplay in the beginning of Game 2 is a perfect example of that.

That line had a terrible game 5 from what I saw even though they had some good looks like the Chytil chance that Kakko/Laf connected 2 sick passes for but you know Gallant was waiting for it just to be an absolute moron with the lines the following game.

I would absolutely offer sheet Kakko.

I'd absolutely do it if we've already traded for Puljujarvi and/or offer sheeted Puljujarvi first. The odds of it working are much higher for Puljujarvi so I try that first.

The numbers back that up as well. Kakko and Laf were their 2 worst players. At the same time is Ryan Reaves really guy who is going to give you more than Kakko?

Yeah, if anything, I'm going back to them as a coach in a do or die. Even if they failed in game 6 as a line tonight, going into next year at least you know your coach has your back as a young player which would do wonders for their confidence but that's where a veteran coach who wants to win at all costs comes in.

I totally get sitting a younger guy after a bad performance IF you have someone else who can be a similar caliber player. Ryan f***ing Reaves is not that guy though lol

If it was someone like Sammy Blais who's been on a cup winner and a decent player, I'd get it too but yeah not sure what his obsession with Reaves is. TB is also not going to be fazed by a guy like him, they'll just abuse last change on a guy like him.

Ryan Reaves is one of the worst (regular) players in the NHL.

I'm pretty sure once he's gone, that might be the absolute death of the goon/fighter. At least full time. They're already damn near extinct anyway.

He's already 35 years old and seems to be the most popular of these type of players, but he does have one 20 point season and a 15 point season, as well as a few years between 7-9 goals scored. So he's probably slightly better than your Cam Janssen's that are completely gone, but he's also not good.

I think the only type of similar player close to his level of popularity is probably Matt Martin and Lou seems to be more in love with him than anybody else. Lou signed him to his last two contracts, both 4 years a piece if I recall correctly and brought him back to the Islanders with him from Toronto. So even he isn't nearly as popular as Reaves is.

These types are almost completely gone anyway, but a very select few teams *Cough* Devils *Cough* seem to value this type of player.

Ross Johnston is probably the guy on the Islanders who'll be the last one, that guy is a complete anchor and just goes running around looking for fights. Lou also signed him for like another 3 years I think. That last part is probably the power forwards now can also fight so it's useless to have guys in your bottom 6 take up a spot when a better player can be used there and you can roll 4 lines. It's obviously a worry if your superstar or top 6 player breaks his hand in a fight but the chances of that are smaller than you getting constantly abused because you're basically playing down a forward for a guy who doesn't adding anything besides a possible fight in a game.

Give me all the diabeetus.

Thanks for inserting an emoji I didn't want you glitchy piece of shit.

I hope Reaves takes a 5 minute major that Tampa scores on 3 times to put them away.

Immediately after someone else on his team gets hit from behind and there's no call.

It’s more than just the Devils, Kurtis MacDermid played 58 games, averaging 7:24 TOI, with Colorado this season.

In the Church of Salmela
Mark Borowiecki is still around, led the league in PIMs and had 4 pts this season. There seems to be quite a few goonie types still (and also some real good hybrids, notably tanner jeannot)

I know there’s a few teams that are doing it. Probably even 10 teams that have played these types an extended amount, but far gone are the days of 20-25 teams having one on the roster at all times.

Even the Devils went years without having one, but Luke Gazdic (reportedly brought in because he was Hall’s roommate in Edmonton lol) played a small amount in 16-17 and Kurtis Gabriel played 22 games here in 18-19, but I think 21 of them came in garbage time. There was 1 in November and then the rest came in February and after. I’m going by memory here when I looked that up a couple months ago.

Geertsen’s 25 games were the most of goons for the Devils since Cam Janssen got 24 games in 2013-2014. Which was the same year that Cam Janssen scored 3 goals in like 15 or 16 game span, including one in his first game of that year in the NHL. We had Krys Barch, but traded him after preseason. He played 22 games in the 48 game lockout shortened season of 12-13.

Before Geertsen’s 25 this year, the last highest was 48 games of Janssen and 51 games of Boulton both in 11-12.

51 games of Boulton where he was not on the ice for a single Devils goal scored.

I don’t consider Boroweicki a goon, although he is another type of dying breed that’s becoming extinct in their own right.

The one dimensional “Defensive defenseman” that literally does nothing but hit and defend. And he defends because he can’t get out of his own zone because he’s awful.

I really think the analytics boom deserves credit for almost completely weeding out the one dimensional goon and the one dimensional defensive defenseman that can’t skate and has no puck skills isn’t too far behind. I think you gotta credit the analytics boom for all of that.
