Those San Antonio jerseys are fire.

This is what happens when Management lacks a vision forward.

Exactly. Has anyone seen an identity anywhere? We seem to have dropped it.

The organization is going to be 'fast' just in time to get pushed around by the next flavor of the month.

Scherbak assigned to Ontario after clearing waivers

Jon Rosen January 7, 2019http://lakingsinsider.com/2019/01/0...ontario-after-clearing-waivers/#disqus_thread

The LA Kings assigned 23-year-old forward Nikita Scherbak to Ontario after he cleared waivers, the Kings confirmed Monday. Scherbak, who has one goal in eight games with Los Angeles, had been placed on waivers Sunday morning. “With Scherbak being a young guy, especially when you see how bad he wants it, it’s hard,” Willie Desjardins said Sunday. “But the only way he’ll get to where he wants to go is by getting down and playing games. Like he can’t get there up here because he doesn’t get what he needs. It may be hard, but it’s the best thing for him.”
Though he was a minus-four in eight games, Scherbak actually boasted some solid possession rates in a small sample size in which he was given fairly cushy zone starts. But he was also caught in a familiar Catch-22 in which a young player wasn’t quite performing well enough to earn additional ice time and thus wasn’t used enough to be able to construct a real niche with the team. He’ll continue to build his game working with Mike Stothers, David Bell, Jaroslav Modry and the Kings development staff and will be a restricted free agent after the season should the Kings choose to qualify him. In 145 games with AHL-St. John’s and AHL-Laval since 2015-16, Scherbak has 28 goals, 95 points and a minus-30 rating. The load-bearing portion of that weighty plus-minus came during the 2015-16 season, which he opened as a 19-year-old before turning 20 on December 30. Prior to this year’s five-game, one-goal stint in Laval, he totaled seven goals and 30 points in 26 games with the Rocket in 2017-18.

Having 10 players over 30 on your roster, is so detrimental, there are no words for it. 11, counting Muzzin, as he turns 30 Feb 21.
I hope at least 5 of the 11 will not be on the opening night roster, 19-20. Thompson's contract thankfully ends....and Hagelin
is 30 and probably moved by deadline. I hope they can deal Carter.

Since this is the Reign thread, time to sign more draft picks and get them on the Reign - if JAD does not make the Kings, he can play there. Hope Vilardi can get healthy and play this season and join the Reign. Hope they can sign Mikey Anderson and Markus Phillips and join the Reign by next season. Then there's Shafigullin and Sodergran. Hoep they can sign and come over. I do not think it would be possible to have all 3 - Vilardi, JAD and Kupari make the Kings, so 1 or 2 will probably be on the Reign.

The more I think about, the more excited I get when I realize we’ll have Vilardi and JAD in Ontario with the possibility of adding Kupari, Shafigullan, Dergachyov, Anderson, Phillips and maybe Sodergran. We’d have a very young but super talented squad.

Nice to see Roy get some positive write-ups this season. Especially this season where some players (Brickley, Lintuiemi) are having disappointing seasons, it's nice to read that Roy has stepped up his game.

Does Roy look to have a NHL skill set? As a RHD, there would seem to be a place for him in LA if he can show to be more reliable than LaDue. I understand LaDue and Roy aren't apples to apples.

Roy got off to a pretty rough start this season. I didn't think he had a good camp, and struggled like most of the Reign. However, his play, just like last year has come on during the 2nd half. He is the RHD on the 1st unit PP (in place of Walker) and does a pretty good job. His offensive game has improved a lot since late in his rookie campaign when he began to show promise. Still, we'll have to see how he handles the NHL. I'd be lying if I wasn't concerned about the defensive side of his game. Same issues as Walker defensively at times. Roy is bigger than Walker but not a big man, he reminds me size wise of Dustin Brown. Roy can play physical. Decent skater, not a speedster like Walker or as elusive as LaDue. Roy is pretty good at getting pucks through to the net. Everything I have heard (from some insiders) is he is going to get a look soon and it will be this season. Kings trying to find out what they have as they plan the team for next year. 7th round pick, and older guy (23) who played college.

Reign shut out at home tonight, with 68 freaking shots on GOAL. Might be a team record for the Reign. Peppered Spencer Martin all night. Great effort, no finish. Amadio and Luff with the most chances.
Seems almost mathematicaly imposible. Even if half the shots sucked and the save % was .95 that would still give you 1.7 goals.
34/2 = 34
34×(1-.95) = 1.7 goals

How has Scherbak looked? Any progress being made ? Should we have any hope he may be a contributing NHL player one day or is he a typical overhyped former first rounder? In the limited time I have seen him play he reminds me of Kempe where I can see tons of skill and potential at times and other times I am left asking for more.

The most likely scenario is he is a first round miss. He has some puck handling skills, but his awkward skating style lacks quickness and he is fairly one dimensional. He's got some skills, but it's hard to envision a road to success at the next level. He was scratched on Friday night, Stothers saying publicly he was sending him a message. Made a real nice play on Saturday night (see the highlights in the video two posts above stole the puck, drew 3 defenders towards him, which resulted in a two on one down low on a goal by Sutter). Seems most of his shot attempts are toe drag plays. Probably 50/50 that he is qualified, but it doesn't hurt the Kings to keep him around for another year and bring an element of skill to Ontario. I suppose he would have a shot at the Kings roster depending on how much or little it is blown up. Most likely scenario long-term is playing in the KHL or Europe in my eyes.

Lack of finish is something that runs deep within the organization. The Reign are one of the worst teams in the AHL offensively. I guess all those years of overlooking talent and skill at the draft wasn’t such a great idea.

It's mostly missing out on the high end talent and skill at the draft. Take out the last 2 drafts since those guys are all too young, between the 2012 and 2016 drafts, the guys that would be going between Ontario and LA right now, it's not like they didn't take anyone with any skill. It's just mostly 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, and 7th rd pick skill. Most haven't made it, or remained over in Europe/Russia. Should've taken Point over McKeown or Lintuniemi, but a lot of teams missed on him though.

Lintuniemi was not a good pick. It was a big reach. He was ranked 187th in the draft. He made some strides last season, but I don' think the Kings will qualify him in the off-season. He should go home and play in Finland.

Really enjoyed watching MacDermid demolish two guys in one play. I wouldn’t mind seeing MacDermid back with the Kings.

Also nice to see Scherbak get on the scoresheet with an assist there, but it doesn’t look like he’s exactly lighting the AHL on fire down there.
how was that macdermid at wing experiment? i think i read that he was put back on D by the 3rd period and i don't think he's played wing since?

Played a portion of two games at LW, although he was switched back to D on the PK at times and during the 3rd period. Last weekend was exclusively back on D. The experiment was very short-lived, and rightfully so.

heh, that bad eh?

seemed like an interesting idea on paper

I'm liking the addition of skilled players. Scherbak is showing promise and I'm looking forward to seeing Grundstrom play. The Reign can use the help on offense. I feel like Scherbak might benefit from watching how Grundstrom plays the game. I feel like Scherbak would also benefit from battle camp. Maybe we will see Durzi when Guelph's season is over......

Amadio, Luff, Wagner and Walker have all been recalled to the Kings the last few days. There goes the ONT offense. Grundstrom is not going to have much to work with.
