Like my NYR brethren in here, I'm happy he scored in his debut and played well. And to possibly repeat what's already been noted, he just needs to stay aware of his surroundings on the ice. He is absolutely fearless skating despite all the injuries he has suffered, but his peripheral vision is suspect. We always joked that he skates with horse blinders on -- because he is a thoroughbred through and through. And he can absolutely deke and dangle, breaking people's ankles and breaking down D coverage almost single-handedly.

The goal last night was very encouraging, because he slowed the play down and took his time. He tends to do everything at high speed, somewhat rushed, and he would lose control at the last second, just shy of putting it home.

Said the same thing in the DOC thread but boy it was a breath of fresh air seeing the speed addition to the lineup. He makes us a MUCH faster team. His size and wall play was quite noticeable too.

If he can continue to build on his debut, he may end up being a legitimate 2C option. Have to figure he only improves with the coaching/development staff we have in the organization too. Don't forget; talented forward go to die in the NYR organization.

It's very early, but ultimately, potentially a much better piece than most original thought.
I worry that Tocchet will coach that out of him.

The system is not THE problem, but it is absolutely part of the problem.

An impressive opener for Chytil. He looks so controlled and shifty through the middle of the ice, and seems to be able to gain the blueline with ease, while backing off the d-men.

But the key to his survival with Tocchet will be his work in the defensive zone. Only one game, but he appears to me to be more than competent in the face-off dot.

Agreed. It would be a bit like the JT Miller trade when we acquired him but Miller was a legitimate first line guy just not getting the minutes and PP time because of a really deep team. The Rangers aren’t nearly as deep and Chytil is unlikely to get PP1 time.

The Rangers have had a very successful PP until this year and as a result Chytil never got PP minutes. As far as 5 on 5, he was arguably our best center over most of the season but Laviolette plays the corpse of Mika Zibanejad ahead of him. They may not be that deep but our past their prime core received prime usage, not Chytil who was playing better than them.

I really think this player has all the upside in the world. Incredible speed and skill. I don't know if there's another player who does as good of a Connor McDavid impression: left shot center flying down the middle of the ice slicing through defenders.

Hot take: if he stays healthy he has legit 1C upside...would love to see him supplant Pettersson in that role, which he might in short order this year given the huge gap in their current performance. And honestly Pettersson has never shown the speed and skill Chytil has shown in one game.

Really glad to see him hit the ground running for you guys. Chytil is a joy to watch and nearly always gets a zone entry + scoring chance when carrying the puck up the neutral zone.

He's a fantastic transition player and has an underrated wrist shot too. Plus he cycles with the puck pretty well and offers a good passing option when his linemates have the puck since he always moves his feet in the offensive zone.

There's a lot to like and I hope he plays continues to stay healthy for you guys.

When we traded for JT and everyone was upset we traded a 1st I made a post talking about how his scoring pace gave quite a bit of hope that he could do more in more minutes. In his time here, that showed to be the case.

If we compare the scoring rate of JT's best year before VAN with Chytil's best year before VAN, we have JT with .0415 points per minute and Chytil with .0413 points per minute.

Now, Chytil has yet to play more than 15 minutes per game or finish a year... but there is a lot of hope for statistical improvement with health and a greater role. PP time is possible too.

We often ignore a players role when talking about stats but there is a good chance the enhanced opportunity for Chytil here leads to enhanced statlines.

Super excited for this player
Frankly I'm not as his skillset is the type that seems exciting when he is a prospect and at some point you realize that he can't dominate nor ahs the elite skills, hands, IQ to be a really good top 6 center in the NHL but rather is just a guy waiting to be replaced in that role.

This is exactly the type of misplaced hope that I was referring to in my last post.

The Canucks still need a legit #2 Center to play with the big boys in the West.

Interesting note on the radio, both he and O’Connor are in something like 90% percentile for speed, so at they very least we got a lot faster.
That's no small thing. This team's scoring woes come down to three things in my opinion, and the lack of speed entering the zone is maybe the biggest issue of the trio. If these two can up the speed, and thereby the energy level of this team, it might translate to more scoring for their entire lines.

I can say with absolute confidence that you have no idea what you're talking about. The only reason he's not a #2 center moving forward is because he's a #1 center.

Laughable to say his hands aren’t elite. Very few in the world can handle the puck at full speed like he can.

He can skate really fast with the puck in open ice, he doesn't have elite hands IMO nor hockey IQ.

As a Canucks fan I really hope that I'm wrong but he is 25 and what you see is what you get and that's not a top 40ish centerman IMO, closer to 64th.

You need elite hands to make the moves and corral pucks at the speed he plays at. Mason Raymond had elite wheels but couldn’t move around the ice like Chytil because he didn’t have the elite puck handling skills.

he brings speed which is good. good hands. last game he held onto the puck too long and drove to the net which is a good thing? i guess.
