With the hatrick, Brodz is tied for 8th in the AHL in goal scoring. He's actually scoring at a 44 goal pace. Pretty good.

What do you think about Mersch ?

I am starting to think Mersch is going to be a victim of an NHL wanting more speedy transition players.

Kind of like how small players got the shaft years ago.

That's what I'm worrying too. I don't think he has the foot speed to be an NHLer. He wasn't fast enough to make it even on the big, bad Kings, never mind the way the team/league is transitioning. I know he's been working hard on his skating but it isn't showing dramatic enough results. I want a Smyth/Holmstrom probably more than the next guy so we need to see what we've got at some point relatively soon imo but I'm just not sure anymore. He's too good to sit on our AHL team forever, that's for sure--so the choice is play him with the big club and find out what we've got (and if it's good, he sticks; if not, well, he'll walk, because no one will trade for him then), or trade him to another team that may be high on that value (edmonton with Maroon and Lucic is a good example of helping maximize a skillset. Play Mersch with Carter? lol).

Campbell has been charged with both losses so far in the All-Star mini-games, giving up 7 goals in 10 minutes, for a 42.00 GAA and a .5625 SPCT.

EDIT: After the third game, the Pacific is eliminated from contention for the final, so Campbell's final line is:
8 goals, 15 minutes. 32.00 GAA, .556 SPCT, 0-2 record.

The wild card will be if Dwight King moves on in UFA.

If that happens, I see Mersch getting a legit shot next season. If the Kings somehow resign Dwight King, I think it's over for Mersch.

I would hope, Dwight King is not resigned. I think King is a little too expensive for what he brings.

I think that is a good take on Mersch re: King leaving. Mersch is what he is. His skating will never be much more than what you see now (when healthy). He can be an NHL player, mostly a PP and SH specialist with some grinder time on the bottom two lines. He has the size and strength down low that teams still covet, and good enough hands to make it count when in close. His vision around the net though is terrible when he is in close. There can be guys right in front of him in an open lane in prime time scoring area when Mersch is coming from behind the net with the puck, and Mersch will still try the wrap around shot 10 out of 10 times. It's little things like that that may keep up from the next level.

And speaking of up and comers, Mike Amadio was just outstanding tonight in the 4-3 OT loss to the Gulls. He picked off or stole at least a half dozen passes, make numerous smart plays, and and had a goal and an assist against Enroth. His skating has improved (he is getting quicker when he gets up to speed), and he has NHL vision in passing lanes. Face-offs will have to get better, but you are looking at an NHL center before too long. Really impressed with his progress.

Amadio never stops playing, that's probably his best asset. He is always skating hard, and making plays.

Amadio looks like he's starting to think ahead of the play instead of simply trying to keep up. That was always his best asset and will make him a good pro. But I didn't expect his offensive awareness to be as great as it has been this soon.

can amadio take dowds spot next year if he's taken by vegas ? how do you think he would handle it ?

I hope we get to see how Dowd grows between now and then and I'd prefer Amadio to have another AHL year to dominate as he's still a youngster but I think if Shore could handle himself Amadio could. I think he could play right now from a smarts and defensive positioning perspective, I just don't think he can from a strength/boards perspective, and I don't think his offense will develop at all if he's rushed into the NHL.

Went to the game in San Diego, not much to take away as both teams weren't sharp. Amadio didn't get as much playing time as I would have hoped, but I did like that he was methodical; Ie, most of the players on both sides played a little too fast and didn't have the hands to match.

I forgot that Patrick Bjorkstrand was on the club. That makes it back-to-back weeks in seeing a Bjorkstrand in an AHL game. I caught his younger brother Oliver play for Cleveland while I was out there for work.

I'm catching the game up here in San Jose. I'm not an expert on evaluating players, but I'll keep an eye on the players who stand out.
