18 yo players are almost never positive players in professional leagues, it’s definitely part of the maturation process.

That coupled with Ontario being the worst team in the league, and by far the worst defensively has created a perfect storm.

Byfield is sometimes tenacious on the backcheck with great success, and other times (too many times) he gets caught coasting and puck watching while the open guy on the weak side finds the open seam and scores (twice last game). You see both happen in the same game, like the last one. Needs a consistent effort there - he’ll learn.

Before I say anything else, did you watch the game (or any of them)? Or are you using +/- to determine defensive prowess?

I will say this. While I have not seen much of AHL tv, I recorded every USA and Canada WJC game and watched and re-watched many of them.
Every time Byfield lost the puck or the play transitioned from offense to defense, he went after the puck carrier about 100% of the time.
He may have had a chance to catch him, maybe 1 in 6 times. It was kind of bizarre and fruitless. He never transitioned to get into position
for a developing play. While this was WJC and not the AHL, this is the way he was playing. I am sure there is now structure and a system
that is implemented and he's now part of that. It just seems it is all new to him and it will be a process for him. I am sure he will get it
and succeed.

I would be happy to let me know what you are seeing with his overall play and defensive play now.

Ok, maybe plus/minus is a garbage stat.

Lol.

But yea Byfield certainly has alot of work to do on the defensive side. I've also noticed some pretty lack luster backchecking but given the situation I focus more on his offense as ultimately he'll be counted on to score. Lot of examples of offensive players who learn the two-way game later. I seem to recall several coaches praising him for being very coachable so not overly concerned at the moment.

One thing though about +/-. -19 along with the discrepancy to the next worst player is eye opening, but I feel like a bunch weren't really his fault. I think one of the previous games he got dinged for a -2 via empty net goals. In the last game, I think it was his 3rd minus, but that was Clagues blown coverage. And on top of that.. some of the goals being let in by the goalies are just garbage.

Sorry to say it's definitely not out of left field that Byfield needs work defensively. James Bond is right in his assessment. I've watched every game. It doesn't take an expert when it's that apparent.
However the experience is mostly a positive, he needed higher competition that will make him pay for poor backchecking and positioning. It will make him a MUCH better player next year because of it I think.

Yes. Byfield needs work. He's 18.

But then he compares it to Kaliyev, suggesting Kaliyev is that much better.

Or, as mentioned, Gaunce is a +11.

Part of the reason I'm not worried about the +/- is that he is scoring, which means he can focus on improving his defensive game.

If he was struggling to
contribute offensively and a -19 I'd probably be hoping the OHL was starting up soon.

As it is, its clear what he needs to work on and he's in the right place to do it.

All true and the other thing to consider is that, as it's been said, he normally wouldn't even be eligible for the AHL this year.

His two years in Sudbury plus his tw WJCs (if that's counted), he's been a plus player. His last year in Sudbury, he led his team in +/- and was I think +15 more than the next guy.

Sometimes can't really blame a lot of the Goals on the goaltender because of coverage etc. but Villalta is just brutal at times. My goodness.

For sure. I definitely don't fault him on the first, that was all on Clauge.. who for whatever reason is really regressing in ONT. But the last 3 goals, I put that like 90-100% all on Villalta. Bad turnovers led to the chances, but they were decently defended and two came from shots that looked easily stoppable.. especially the 3rd one. Villalta looking at his glove afterwards like there's a hole in it or something was funny.

Some of the worst goaltending I can remember was Grant Fuhr during his time with LA. But compared to the f***ery in ONT, his play was HoF caliber.

But I thought the Kings had the best goaltender development system in the league!?

It was always a myth.

Durzi with the Brown-esque backhand pass to the opposition in OT for the breakaway. Luckily Villalta actually made a save, but between Durzi and the goaltending, I'm surprised ONT's worst minus player is only -19.
