Young kid, but doesn't seem to be fast enough to succeed in Pittsburgh's system. His first 2 years he was looking like what everyone saw when he was drafted, but cancer and injuries got him and now he skates with bricks on his feet.

Ultimately, whats his value? This is assuming Pouliot comes up and succeeds on the left side and pushes Maatta down the depth chart. Cause I cant see Pittsburgh sending Olli on a half year conditioning stint.

Realistically, Maatta isn't being traded. It would be dumb to get rid of him this soon. If he would be traded, the Pens would be looking for exactly what he is when he's at his best: a top-4 LHD. So I really don't see a point in trading him, nor do I think that will happen.

Dream scenario would be to 1 for 1 swap him for Trouba and move Daley down to 3rd or force him back to the left side (which he doesn't like)

Maatta needs good conditioning to be built back up.. Maatta does have decent value right.. He did look good in the World Hockey Championships. So I really depends on the team system he would re-develop well..

Why would the Pens move Daley down to the 3rd pair? He's a fringe top pair defenseman in the Penguins system and they have Schultz on the 3rd pair already. That's why a Maatta trade would have to be for a LD, which I don't see anyone pursuing.

Pens fans on this site are mostly overdramatic for the most part, I wouldn't take any serious consideration into their evaluation of Maatta. He's already the whipping boy for this year since Kunitz has played too well to be a whipping boy. Maatta has struggled this year, but I'd say it's more of a "he's playing poorly" than a "he's playing like a skating abortion" like what other people would try to argue.

Gardiner for Maatta straight up? Has Maatta really regressed this hard?

No.. Pre -injury it Maatta looked so good that his up side could/would be the person to replace Letang when the Pens had thoughts about moving him.. .Now he is really #4 d.. Just not the Elite guy we are/were seeing.

At this point Gardiner is the better defensemen. Maata has higher upside but it's beginning to look less and less line he'll reach it. We should be adding to our defense, not weakening it.

Pouliot would need to really step up this season for me to be comfortable moving Maatta for anything but a replacement.

Assuming the Pens feel they can retain Daley, and Pouliot starts to outplay Maatta, would there be any interest in JVR for Maatta?

Definitely a dream. This might have been an option prior to the injuries/illness, but doubt the Jets look at a 1 for 1 with the Maata that's out there today

Interesting, but Leafs already have 2 top 4 LHD. Need a RHD or need to trade Gardiner before this trade happens.

His ability to play normally and grow has been hampered down by his cancer and injuries. Give him some time, I think he will produce more if he doesn't suffer more injuries.

To Pittsburgh:
LW: E. Kane
G: R. Lehner
2017 2nd round pick

To Buffalo:
D: O. Maatta
G: M. Andre-Fleury

Probably at the deadline. Solves the expansion problem for Pittsburgh. Kane adds scoring and physicality. Fleury upgrades Buffalo's net and Maatta adds a top-4 LHD and really helps Buffalo's defense corps.

If Kane didn't have really serious attitude issues, I'd consider this for a second. Seeing how he does though, no thanks really easily. I don't really think the Pens need wing help that much right now. It would be ideal to have better than Sheary, Kunitz and Hagelin as your top-9 LWers, but Kunitz and Sheary have been extremely solid this year and Hagelin has been solid ever since he has joined the Penguins.

There is nothing wrong with him being a middle pairing Dman.

The Pens don't need him to be anything more than a middle pair Dman, Dumoulin is the anchor as their top pair LD for as long as he's here IMO.

The only thing I can see Maatta being traded for is a similar aged dman. About the only two realistic trades are Lindholm and Trouba. At $4mil, he fits each teams salary reqs (I believe) and he would excel on both teams. With that, Pens have Pouliot to move to LHD and either of them replace Daley after this year.

I believe these would have to be 1:1 trades. I don't believe there is much of a gap between any of them.

No from Pittsburgh. Kane is a turd. Has serious attitude problems and off ice issues. That is something Pittsburgh wouldn't take. What part of any deal involving Fleury is not bringing back $$$ don't you understand. We need to clear cap.

Has Reilly ever played RD?

Yea he plays RD often but it is his offside, and is much better on the left side. I would love Maatta, seems like exactly what the Leaf would need.

But he would either be bottom pairing or be put with Rielly on the first pairing, don't think he's good enough to play there though, after reading some of the comments.

Can't see Winnipeg having interest in Maatta.

Josh Morrissey pretty much makes Maatta redundant here. Morrissey has been outstanding at LD this season for the Jets. No need exists to take a step down from Trouba to Maatta.

Did you forget the :sarcasm: emoji? Or are you seriously implying that Maata at this point is a Lindholm comparable?

What about something around Athanasiou + Brendan Smith + a draft pick? While not as good as Maatta, Smith is a strong skater and would fit the Pens system well.
