In fairness the Avs D got absolutely worked in the playoffs against Vegas. More so the Girard pairing but the lack of size back there was really evident when it mattered.

Edit: I'm assuming you were referring to the Toews - Makar pairing.

Girard's also a major comparable here so it's fair to bring up. There's gonna be real questions about his ceiling as a 5'9 defender.

Absolutely fair points, perhaps having 3 swift skating but soft more transitional defenseman is too many without the appropriate partner. It'll be interesting this year because I imagine it'll be Girard-Manson and I'd expect better from Toews-Makar than what they showed last playoffs. I was surprised that Makar was as small as he is. Always thought he was 6' or taller.

Hate to say it , but I think either Zellweger or Drysdale will be part of a bigger trade package. I dont think our new GM will want to keep 2 undersized D-men, even though Drysdale is not small IMO. I think we could get a very nice player for a Zellweger plus a first in a year or two..

Size is not just height. I would not consider Sid Crosby as small. It all comes down how they are build.

Reach is not without benefits but it's mostly about strength, whether they can win puck battles and compete for positioning in the dzone.
Which I think is more in line with what Verbeek was saying - he wants guys who can and will compete, not just lumbering monsters. Zellweger seems to have plenty of compete in him. And both he and Drysdale are still boys, we really don't know what kind of strength they'll end up with.

Yes, Zellweger skating and compete level is what sets him apart and makes his size much less of a consideration. You just don't trade that type of talent and get fair value.

Drysdale has been physically overmatched this year in the NHL and everyone knows it. I'm sure he feels physically beaten up after 70 games and his confidence has probably suffered as well. Under normal conditions he'd be playing in junior hockey and everyone would be raving about him. I still think he'll become a Letang type player even if he has to spend some time in the AHL next year.

Agreed, Drysdale should be in the AHL. Maybe next year.

Starting to think Drysdale turns into Fowler and Zellweger turns into a Theodore like player. Zell has the ability to get pucks through with a simple snapshot something Theodore was always known for. I just don't see the aggressiveness with Drysdale (it's still REALLY REALLY early). To me he is tracking to be our next RH Fowler at this time. Hope he takes a huge jump next season though.

Going to be fun tracking both Zellweger and Drysdale and seeing how they turn out.

RHD fowler... some people on this board are going to be overjoyed by that

If Drysdale was in junior hockey (where he'd normally be absent covid), he'd be a top 10 prospect in the NHL and everyone would be raving about him. Ducks have done a MAJOR disservice to him (except financially) by playing him in the NHL on a bad team at 18/19.

I mean even financially long term, pretty sure drysdale is going to lose out on a ton of money.
