I think he is getting up to speed. I have liked him lately besides the lack of production of course lol. Throw him on the top line for a game or two

He didn't look bad in the pre season
Agree. Has looked better lately. His best game was against the Rangers and looked good again yesterday. Some optimism here. He is playing a lot now with McLeod who is another black hole of offense at the moment.

There has been some discussion about ways to shed some or all of Brown's bonus. The most obvious way would be trading him or waiving him before he earn the bonus. I'd say the chances of that happening are so close to 0 that it is not worth considering any further. Hence the question becomes, what if he is traded after playing 10 games? I did not know explicitly how this would work so I went to the best source I know for this stuff and asked @mouser. He responded that it was his understanding that the team that there is no splitting the cap associated with bonus payments so one of the teams would be on the hook for the full meal deal. However, he also stated that it would be the team who paid the bonus carrying the cap regardless of what team Brown was on when the bonus was earned. In this case, since I don't know when the bonus is going to be paid I don't know who would be on the hook.

I think he'll be fine once he finds his timing and if Woody ever puts some effort into getting him going.

I know its fun to speculate what could happen if...
but the reality is we've made this bed and we are sleeping in it for the year and next due to his bonuses. He is not going anywhere.

I would be patient with him. He isn't fully up to speed.

If he was a Ryan Mcleod, who did nothing really and lost his man half of the time, I would hate it. He actually forechecks hard and helps.

I like his game last night. Not quite $4M good, but there's signs that he's getting back into the swing of things.
I think now that EDM has switched back their system he will start to come around. Yesterday was the first game back to it and the team was night and day better. We will see where he is at in a month under it.

While it looked like they were running a 1-2-2 NZ I’m not so sure they’ve made appreciable differences in their D system. They appeared to be much more aggressive in its execution vs running it like a 5 man PK. That said Calgary wasn’t building pressure or had long bouts of possession in our zone plus I was having too good a time in the stands so wasn’t paying too much attention.

Be curious to see the structure they play with vs Dallas, a much better product offensively than Calgary who can’t even pick their pre-game outfits properly right now. (The Cowboy Chippendales look was sooooo bad)

His fancies as posted seem ok no? He’s not doing much offensively but there is progress.

Yeah. His line has done a really good job limiting chances against so far.

He got goalied pretty hard early on. I think he had something stupid like a .600 onSV% at 5v5 for the first two games. He's only been on the ice for one 5v5 goal since then and has by far the best xGA/60 on the team too.

He seemed to really be avoiding contact in his first 3-4 games but the last 3 there’s been noticeable improvement in his forecheck and his chances.

Was pretty hard on him early but the reality is a year off after damaging a knee that badly there must be some natural apprehension to his game.

Hopefully his hands and confidence come back sooner than later. Between 55, 71 and 28 we need that 3rd line going offensively.

If the average employee was as good at their job as Connor Brown is at his, well...

A Nigerian Prince scam has nothing on this clown right now. He is robbing us blind and the organization has bent over backwards to enable it.
He's got the entire management on Woody's coaching couch. lol.

Gregor trying to dunk on Oilers fans by saying Connor Brown has analytics similar to Pupjujarvi and he doesn't remember people saying Jesse should be waived. He's just ignoring the actual issue of the bonus. Classic Gregor.

Oh well. There is no way we waive and demote him. Enjoy Jesse 2.0 and his ghost using up all our cap increase in 24/25.

I dont get this take.
The man is recovering from a potentially career ending injury and he has played a grand total of 8 games since then. If you have ever played sports then you know that it takes some time to regain confidence in your body after an injury.
Thats especially important in this case because Brown is not and never has been a perimeter player. When he is on his game he goes to the dirty areas of the ice. He creates turnovers and scoring chances that way.
Thats his game.
He wasnt doing that at all in the first 4-5 games (looked tentative to me...for good reason) but in the last 3 he has been getting better and better. Even though he hasnt scored he has been a pain in the ass to play against.
So instead of allowing him to continue to find his way on this team your solution is to waive him?
With all due respect...thats ridiculous.

It seems like we have to keep Brown up regardless of how he does otherwise we will never be able to sign another UFA ever again.

The take would simply be that a zero point grinder is not worth losing all our extra cap space next year. It's really all on Holland for the lazy contract. Could have at least made some conditions that he had to put up points like a 3rd liner minimum to get it all. Or lumps of bonus for 10, 30, 50 games or something. Instead it's just 10 games for him to get the highest one year salary of his career.

So, we have a chance right now to try to salvage next year's cap space, the very last chance we may have to show McDrai there is good reason to stay. Or handicap Holland's replacement next year in hopes Brown is a huge game changer for our cup chances this season. If I had to choose, I'd pick no handicap next year and look for Lavoie or someone else to fill the forwards out.

Brown thinking he can get the highest 1 year salary of his career after that injury for what could be 0 points in 10 games is a little greedy too IMO lol. Still waiting on a player to give us a discount for the chance to play with McDavid. He took the risk, we took the risk and have every right to use the tiny bit of power the contract provides.

Of course we will not though. The same laziness Holland had making that deal up will be the same he approaches every contract and cap situation with.

I keep looking for brown on the score sheet I must be reading the wrong ones

I see 0 goals 0 assists 0 points -5.

People can talk analytics all they like but when has that many zeros?

I must be too old school to think goals and assists are a good thing. Obviously analytics wins games and not goals and assists

Brown was being paid $4M in 21/22 and 22/23.

Yeah. 4M is highest he's been paid. 10 goals in those other 2 4M years. Injuries of course. This week he can cash in 12M total for 10 goals over 3 season.

I'm sure teams were lining up to match his career high 4M salary in the summer

It could very well be that this "Cup or Bust" mantra this year IS the McDrai signal that if they don't do it in the here and now... then it's adios and off to somewhere with a chance to actually win something before their best years are gone and they are in decline.

It really might not matter about the cap situation in the next couple years if McDrai are essentially out the door because the team isn't remotely a contender at this point.
why not trade Campbell with 4/5 firsts and upgrade the roster? Your window is now. Look at your aging wingers
