Omfg I thought the 10 games thing was a joke
The punchline is late arriving. Earlier in the day people were shouting from rooftops that the Oilers don't have to pay dick if Connor Brown doesn't perform or doesn't play much. That has been rendered fiction.

Now we know Brown just has to play 10 games and all the loaded bonuses hit. Whether this season or next is irrelevant. Its still eating our cap.

I mean why even put in the clause if its only 10 games? Thats a serious question. Its as if just mentioning theres a game played clause is somehow doing proactive homework. Even though its smoke and mirrors nothing. This contract is written to pretty much guarantee Brown gets his money in any condition, and that it costs us cap.

I actually agree that the bonus trigger is bad but he didn’t have a lot of options, look at the contracts handed out today. Bottom line, he upgraded a position while creating 2M in cap space this upcoming season when we’re looking to contend.

Are we not looking to contend next year? You know Draisaitl's contract year? That one?

There's taking calculate risks ... this is bordering on insanity, he's taking a very big risk for a player that doesn't even have that much upside, this is not like you're getting a star player here.

Holland doesn't give a f*** about next year because he knows he's not going to be here.

He's old and the Oilers are already set on Staois if they don't hire Staois for next year they know he will leave for Ottawa.

There's creative and then there's stupid ... giving someone a bonus that activates for only 10 games played and puts your team is in a 3.2 million hole the next year when he's not even on the team is stupid.

I'm sorry that your feelings are hurt that people are negative, but there's a reason for it ... these are highly questionable moves that are likely to blow up in the Oilers face just like Chiarelli's "creativity".

We don't know how they plan to manage the cap hit. For all we know they plan to leave room for 3M on this years cap and eat 1M next year. Of leave room for all 4M this year and wait to see where they are at at the trade deadline.

In essence they have raised their cap 3M this year to give them more room to sign other players to give them a better chance this year.

You don't "manage" dead cap.

Bouchard and McLeod will take them to near the cap roof, so this is going to be a cap penalty largely for next year.

Holland doesn't give a shit because he knows he's not going to be here next year. Not his problem.

And yes the whole point is to give Holland a cap reprieve for overpaying Nurse and Campbell. If it screws over the next GM, again, not his problem.

Holland is definitely lobbing a hot potato at the next GM. I respect that he's trying to win now and to be fair the opening day lineup isn't set yet and could still be bolstered. That said there are only so many ways to trim salary. Ceci and/or Kulak will likely have to be dealt for futures or young players to be able to have a functioning team under the cap next season. Maybe that's why Broberg hasn't been dealt?

It's a move like this that may make a guy like Staois pick Ottawa over Edmonton. Literally.

Does the bonus really kick in after 10 GP? Wow, because of health concerns I assumed it would be more like 60 GP. It's basically a signing bonus to be paid next year then.

We fully understand that. I’m not sure you understand that we are getting a top six forward for $775k this year to balance that out.
This is kind of two sides. you've spent several posts denoting he hasn't been used as a topsix player but now he's a topsix player, automatically, on a much better club. Something doesn't add up. Which is it. Its odd to argue he's both.

Frankly I'd rather give up a topsix spot to Holloway in the Wings or whoever grabs it. Connor Brown has been a bottomsix player and it seems as if that will continue. Its not a given he's getting topsix here and keeping that.

Seems some confusion on whether Connor Brown is topsix or not. But this doesn't prevent people from apparently fait accompli saying he is, and will be, and thereby concluding he's worth the money...while stating he's never been a topsix...:monkey::monkey:

I'm not even sure why Holland even tried to "save face" by making it a 10 game bonus. That's just a f***ing bonus all into next year, why even have the 10 game condition. It's a joke.

This is basically a locked in "kiss my ass" gift for the next Oilers GM.

because it has to be added to next year, not this year otherwise we couldn't afford him.

Reminder: 14.25 million dollars per year on Nurse and Campbell, neither of whom benefit this team in any way.

Yeah, possibly. I'm not saying your wrong. The worst could happen. I'm just saying there are ways to make this a positive signing. And who else are you going to get for 775? the alternative is signing Drake Caggiula.

You're comparing the player we just got to a guy we shipped out Kostin as collateral to get rid of because he wasn't worth the paper his contract was printed on.

Lmao.

And here I was getting banned from posting in the rumours thread for comparing Brown's contract to all the others signed today with an assumption that to get the bonus, it would require him playing a full season.

I spit coke zero all over the place when I read the tweet that said the entire bonus comes in after ten games played. Genuinely, I'm sitting here with coke zero all over my desk, monitor, keyboard, mouse. I am howling like a wolf and each keystroke sends pop in every direction. Laughing so hard man.

Ten games. Omg. This is very clearly a f*** you to the organization knowing this is his last hurrah. No other excuse. Look through every other signing made today, how many are worse? I can hardly think of any besides Holl (and that's to a team with cap to burn who isn't trying to win.)

Just remember if we don't win the Stanley Cup this year, with a team that is essentially unchanged from last year besides losing Kostin and Yamamoto in place of Connor Brown, we will go into next season without any of the players listed and a 3.25 million dead cap space hit for nothing in return. Now that's what we call full Pejorative Slur. You never go full Pejorative Slur.
This. Basically none of the posters now finding out about the full details are in support of it. None of the posters saying it was slamdunk great deal earlier in day are saying anything now. When its more important to berate anybody with a divergent opinion you know some are getting nervous too, but won't admit it.

The ten games thing is like Monty Python clause to me. A complete joke. As I stated why even have it. We lost Bjugstad as well. We still may not have enough to sign all of Booch, McLeod, Skinner.

You missed it but I said yesterday that most contending teams have to pare roster down AFTER they have had their cup win. We're paring roster without winning jackshit. Holland just painted himself in a foreseeable corner. The price you have to pay to be Oilers fans I guess..

Yeah, possibly. I'm not saying your wrong. The worst could happen. I'm just saying there are ways to make this a positive signing. And who else are you going to get for 775? the alternative is signing Drake Caggiula.

Maybe you wouldn't have to screw over the Oilers in a critical contract year with Draisaitl if you didn't overpay Campbell and Nurse and Foegele out the wazoo.

If only 1 mill was available then man up and own it, you f***ed up your cap management, making the team suffer for your mistakes after you're gone as a GM is just bullshit. The next GM shouldn't have to deal with this garbage.

Also 4 million for Connor Brown ... based on what? Does Holland just accept every valuation an agent tells him because it must be true? This guy hasn't played in a year. The last season he had prior he was on a middling 16 goal pace.

How does the Brown bonus impact Draisaitl's next contract?

So for all the haters that didnt want Holland to sign this contract, who are you bringing in this year to play in the top 6 for league minimum?

This move is a risk, but it's a good one. The cap will go up 5M+ next season and Holland can open up some cap at the deadline so the whole bonuses doesnt carry over.

Numbers are a funny thing. Consumers are easily manipulated to buy things that cost $9.99 instead of $10 thinking it's a dollar cheaper even though we all know it's only $0.01. I'm sure fans would be a lot happier seeing a contract at 3M with a 1M bonus and think that's a better deal because it's fair value for this year and doesnt hurt the cap as much next year. In the end the cap implications could end up breaking down the same way but constructed in a way that allows the Oilers to squeeze in brown.

I dont think this is the hot potato for next year like some posters are saying.

It doesn't but it means basically in the last year of his contract we really don't see much benefit from the "bargain" 8.5 hit ... sure it's a bargain ... but then the Oilers take that money and spend it on 5 million in dead cap.

Then the next year we'll be forced into paying Draisaitl 13-14 million. So basically they did dick all with that value contract.

Ten games. Still dying over here. Sorry, came back from a nap energized and wanting to discuss this a bit further. Hopefully a few of the rude people from earlier can apologize and realize how embarrassing this contract ends up being. The only way it is worth is if we win the Cup, and how does that happen when we can't afford to upgrade anything? What we have done with this deal is add ~15 points over the course of a season from a RW.

I'm no fan of Yamo, but if you told me it would cost Yamo + Kostin to get Brown at a similar salary, would you still do it?

Consider me one of the few people who would prefer to have Kostin still over Brown, and it was assumed Kostin would sign here for 1.75.

You think Holland is going to CLEAR cap at the deadline to lessen the blow of the Brown albatross? Lmao.

Draisaitl is gone in two years. He grew up Köln, big city, night life. I wish it wasn’t so…. But he’s out of here.

But the Oilers benefit this season while Draisaitl has a greater percentage of the salary cap being allocated to him.

There's no free lunch, but one has to eek out every advantage when your team is "all-in" for the Cup.

Next year is mainly important to Holland. Because he knows he's not going to be here after that.

It's not that next year is the "only" year to go for it,= it's a selfish move made by a man who doesn't care about the next GM's position here. He knows it's not going to be him (or his son) and so who gives a crap is his reasoning.

Sorry man, but replacing Yamo and Kostin with Connor Brown is not going all-in. It's a lateral move addressing what is statistically and objectively the least important position in the entire sport.

If this is the move that is us going 'all-in', and it should, as we are severely hampering our cap next year in order to get this guy on the cheap this year, then what a fail it is. Where is our major defensive upgrade? Goalie? The positions of weakness for this club?
