Do good teams need a historic PDO run to go from an 83 point non-playoff team to a league leading team?
salt.

4 new defencemen, rebuilt bottom 6, a bunch of new coaches. Its not like its been luck of the draw.
It took some actual trades, pro scouting...you know...stuff that requires more strategy than relying on the once in a generation prize horse won at a slot machine ...

I think defensive structure is largely coaching to be honest.

We see teams with middling talent on defense still some how have Ok to good goals against totals all the time.

Offense is more the innate talent ability of your forwards, goaltending is whatever is going on between the ears of your goalie ... those things a coach doesn't control as much.

You can't give the Jack Adam's to a coach who has McDavid.
If thats the case.

You cant give the hart or lindsay to anyone not named McDavid.

Vancouver can both be a good team, and be a tad high in the PDO department.

Both can be true.

I mean they did...just like we sucked to get McDavid, Draisaitl, Nuge and Bouchard
or the Bolts sucking ass to get Stamkos and Hedman...what's so ironic?
you cant compare a 7th and 5th overall pick to the amount of 1st overalls Edmonton acquired. Canucks have been bad, but they’ve never had the luxury of a 1st overall pick, let alone multiple within years of each other

4+ players having career years, results of big planning and strategy, zero slot machining. Reminds of the year Calgary popped off and was nearly unanimously chosen to come out of the west. Then the wheels came off in 4-1 series loss and their core blew up.

To be fair one of those came in an absolutely horrible draft year (2012), and only 2 of those 4 picks came from actually finishing last in the league. The Hall and Nuge picks were intentionally planned, everything after that was management being so awful that they couldn't get out of the basement. Either way both franchises had long periods of sucking. I don't even know why people get into these little back and forth exchanges. Every team rebuilds and sucks at some point that's just sports.

Yea, but listen if the Oil end up in a wildcard spot that is just the baseline minimum that was expected. You can’t say it was a great coaching job to get them into a wildcard spot. They should have gotten at least a wildcard spot even if Katz himself came down and was coaching them.

Sure, but if Knoblauch continues to sport the highest winning% of any coach in the league you would have to think he gets some consideration no?

Goaltending stabilizes, shooting percentage returns to the mean = here we are. They are playing a bit better defensively but not markedly different than under Woodcroft. They have played very well all year in truth.

They have been much better 5 on 5. They have been better defensively and part of that is they are a better forechecking and cycling team in the offensive zone. Controlling the play and the puck more automatically improves your team defensively. They spend far less time in their defensive zone. They are never going to be a great defensive team, their strength is always going to be skill and offense but even if you are a great team with skill and offense you still have to have some defensive ability and have solid goaltending. They have been getting league average goaltending for about the past 20 games and that is probably all they need to be an elite team as long as they can continue getting reasonable defensive play.

And the Oilers never had the luxury of having a #1 pick of quality that matches or exceeds Petterson or Hughes until the fourth time they did it.

It isn't the Oilers fault that they happened to have their first 3 #1 overalls in frankly shitty drafts with shitty players (relative to expectations of a #1) in those spots. Luck and timing have a role here too.

Uhhhh, it took until the 4th time…. Unless you’re referencing Nail Yakupov as the “quality pick”

Correct - my mistake.

Hall and Nuge are both top 5/10 talents, but not what you would expect from a #1 normally. Yakupov was more of a round 7 talent.

Knoblauch didn't do a damned thing except benefit from PDO rebounding.

Woodcroft would still have a job if Holland could sign any f***ing reliable goaltenders.

It’s not guaranteed, but it’s better than the definition of madness.

Yak was a top 10 talent. People forget plenty of those never turn out.

He had some game early and then Eakins happened which derailed him.

Could he have done better otherwise? Maybe not but we'll never know.
