The trickle down effect McDavid has is incredible, I swear when he is playing well it seems like everyone else just plays better, it's like they know they can play a little loose cause McDavid will be able to score a couple himself. Like I know it sounds kind of dumb but to me it's not a coincidence that everyone started playing well once McDavid was fully healthy.

Some posters talking about the Oilers maybe earning a wildcard spot when they're only 3 points behind where they were at this time last year, last year being a year in which they had 109 points and were just 2 points away from the division lead.

Paul Coffey is the single biggest reason for this turnaround.

He basically came in, saw a defense core which had a lot more potential than what was happening. Basically told Nurse, Bouchard and Co to have fun, use there skating and shooting abilities to make plays. Bouchards skillset is one of the best amongst defenseman 25 and under. His vision, passing, shooting etc is frightening. Coffey has instilled confidence into these guys.

They are also playing with layers now. Yes this team is back to being a juggernaut.

The only thing holding them back now is Skinners continued inconsistency.

The Oilers six game winning streak...

1. @caps against Lindgren
2. vsDucks against a team that lost like 5-7 prior games
3. vsVegas against Thompson
4. @Jets against Hellebuyck (credit here)
5. vsHurricanes against AHL level goaltending
6. vsWild against Fleury

Wake me when they actually face against good competition, but more notably, against a good goaler.

Why don't you show the losses in their tailspin when they faced a ton of backups? CLown

lol

Why are mods letting this thread go on? Its embarrassing. We have our own GDT
Flaming EDM is a great past time here. A Toronto thread gets shut down very quick and you get hit the with troll stomper in an instant

Hey....this is what everyone else wanted, wasn't it? A thread to focus on and celebrate the (mis)fortunes of the Oilers.

Not like Oilers fans started it....but we're all saying:

You aren't counting the cup champions as good competition?

Teams in the West will need around 95 points to make the playoffs.

Edmonton sits at 21 pts through 23 games.

There are 59 games left which represents 118 points and the oilers would likely need 74 of those points just to make it in the playoffs…which is a .627 winning percentage.

They literally have to play like this the rest of the season to make up for a bad 6 weeks of hockey.
I hate to get in the way of some good math and stats. but, I looked at the standings as of DEC 8 and if the Oilers just win the games in hand they have on the teams above them, they are 1 point behind a wild card spot. If I am correct, aren't all these teams pretty well on a level playing field and all the Oilers have to do is play slightly better than them to make the playoffs. Just saying. To me, I don't think its as much of a long shot as you are implying.

Last 4 games were against playoff teams from last year including the defending champs. And Thompson, Hellebuyck and Lindgren are great goalies.

Pathetic attempt to discredit them. At least point to something that opens a discussion and isn't false.

Not only that he reigned in how often they were pinching. Basically he only wants them pinching when it’s a low risk high reward situation.

It’s one of those things where no one is really grabbing the bill by the horns for the final wild card right now, but someone probably will, so the 95 points isn’t a bad cutoff historically for a final playoff spot. Edmonton had a .649 point percentage the past two years combined though, so it’s not even a stretch for them to get 100 at this point provided they stay healthy.

Those teams have a combined 77 wins. Or an average of ~13.

When Edmonton started this win streak, they had five.

Won't go planning the parade yet, but nice to see the team getting rewarded for good play.

In all honesty I don't think they were playing all that bad in a lot of the games they lost either when they were on their skid. Several of the those games the Oilers very much deserved to win, but they were unlucky or their goaltending failed them.

Basically all I'm saying is their 2-9-1 record could have very easily been a .500 record. They weren't nearly as bad as their previous record indicated.
