Oilers need scouts who can find them players with all those picks after the first round.

Chiarelli has actually been killing the draft past 2 years. Jones/Bear doing very well WHL, Paigin in KHL. Then this draft gets Benson, Niemelainen, Wells, Rasanen

Then goes out and grabs 3 very good NCAA free agents in Cagguila (looked great in pre season, already made NHL), Benning (done well in NHL thus far) and Nick Ellis (.925 in AHL)

Thats better drafting and siginings outside first round than last 5 years combined

Hey I am a big Oiler fan... I am excited the team is competing again... Ten years without the playoffs were brutal.

I would like to see the Oil develop players to replace the ones that will go eventually... like Pouliot, Fayne....ect. Our development of players has really sucked in the past and could be way better going forward. Our draft picks going forward are going to be mid level picks which makes are development process even more important.

On DeAngelo... I do not understand why the Oil did not pick him up for a second round pick.... Seems like he could be had as he is not on the Arizona roster.

Take a look at our roster. Youth everywhere. On D we have Nurse, Davidson, Klefbom and Larsson, all young guys. At forward, McDavid, Pulujarvi, Draisaitl, and more. We don't need to worry too much about prospects right now, we can restock our prospect pool by drafting. We have a lot of potential NHL'ers in the system already. Not many future studs, but that's because our young studs are already NHL'ers.

Agreed. We have a well earned reputation as a poor drafting team outside of the first round, but that was under the old management regime. The kids that Chiarelli is drafting seem like solid depth guys for the future. As long as some of them turn out we should be okay.

The Oilers are slim with some prospects on the farm....

- right and left shooting offensive defenseman...
- right wingers
- upcoming goalies

What would it take to get DeAngelo from Arizona?

I am happy to hear that the Canucks Oilers, are finally ready to start their rebuild

Oilers can stock for the future by making good selections and keeping their picks going forward. The reason the pipeline isn't as strong as it should be right now is because our top picks are in the lineup soon after being drafted (and the Reinhart trade, puke). We aren't in a position to sell off anyone for future's anyways. The idea of stocking for the future literally makes no sense.

even some of the picks they made before did end up playing too. I mean Petry was a 2nd rounder that management just pissed away, Marincin is kicking around in the NHL, Pitlick looks good this season and his only real knock has been getting injured every time he started to get some traction, Lander has carved out a bottom 6 role it seems, Slepyshev is playing this year off and on, Davidson would be playing if not for injuries. Hell Toby Reider was a guy that the previous management pissed away too. There's a lot more guys from after the first round that the Oilers drafted, but it didn't fit the narrative so it gets ignored. The real problem has always been that after the first round it takes more than 2 or 3 years generally for guys to make an impact.

This post accurately describes the simulation experience if you ever get very deep into EHM or another simulation game. At some point you can have so much talent that your AHL team could probably win a Cup or two in place of your perma-dynasty.

Why in the world would Nurse be making 4 mil. More like 1.5/2 until he can prove he is worth more.

Its certainly not a stretch to think he could be in the 3-4M range longterm with the way he's developed and improved this season. Easily been our best Dman for the last 5 or 6 games, and probably top 3-4 for the entire season. Not that it actually matters if he earns that contract. The team can easily fit in the contracts that the OP mentioned with a ton of salary coming off the books over the next 3 years, and a bunch of young players finally pushing for full-time NHL jobs from within.

Even a couple picks from the old regime are starting to track well or look good (Pitlick, Davidson, Slepyshev, Khaira, Lagesson, Vesel, Simpson to name a few). I also think Marino and Svoboda (both Chia picks) are both tracking well also. Needless to say, they should be getting at least a few NHLer's out of the past 2 years of drafting/College signings.
