Rumor: Oilers may be out (for now) on Karlsson due to $$. Looking at Klingberg & Gostisbehere as alternatives

This feels like posturing from the Oilers to show they're willing to walk away, feels like it's being leaked to the media on purpose.

But it does sound like he's willing to waive his NMC and wants to go to Edmonton ... I think ultimately it makes more sense for both sides to come to a deal.

It doesn't make sense to have an 11.5 million player and pay 100% of the salary and use up the guy's remaining good years while you're in a rebuild.

Even if you have to retain more than you would would like it's better than paying the full amount if you're not likely to be competitive and get some futures in return that you can build around.

Damn, it's almost like myself and others said it would be super complicated to acquire him mid season due to his contract.

Karlsson has said he would waive his NMC for Edmonton, but right now SJ is only willing to retain 20%

need a 3rd team

What team in their right mind are going to retain on Karlsson for multiple seasons?

If SJ won’t retain more it’s just not going to happen.

Both klingberg and Ghost are the exact opposite of what the Oilers need.

Connor and Leon want a puck mover.

Klingberg with @50% for a haul would be nice.

Could even try for a reunion with Petry ?

I kinda feel this is Edmonton just playing chicken and hoping San Jose budges on either the asset demand or more retention.

Well …if SJ is serious about moving Karlsson, they aren’t going to have many options to offload his contract considering Karlsson’s NMC.

I wouldn't really call it chicken. There is a real fit here between these two teams but 20% is just straight up not enough to make the numbers work unless we start talking about San Jose taking on some really questionable contracts(Campbell).

And on the other hand if San Jose's ownership is not willing to go higher than that, well that's understandable.

Klingberg would be a perfect fit for what the oilers are trying to accomplish

Win every game 7-6

Klingberg and Ghost are train wrecks in their own zone, we have enough of that already with Bouchard among others. Karlsson not happening unless they retain 40% ( highly doubtful ) That leaves Chychryn as a puck mover with some defensive acumen , then get a hard to play against right shot D to replace Bouchard. Or trade Yamo for Soucy

Why are the Oilers targeting these kinds of defenseman anyways? Are they just doubling down **** it we’ll try and win every game 7-6?
Despite the sweep, the series last year against the Avs was closer than many Avs fans are willing to admit. The Oilers were right there in 3/4 games, especially games 1 and 4.

Add this year’s Karlsson and average goaltending (i.e., not Mike Smith) to the Oilers and that series would get pretty interesting.

Why in the world do some oilers fans want EK? Scoring goals and their PP isn’t the problem. He’s the last guy I’d want to spend decent futures on if I was an oilers fan
Karlsson is leading the league in 5 on 5 pts, and if you watched EK when he carried the Senators through 3 rounds you’d understand playoff Karlsson D’s up.

It seems so insane to me that the Oilers are apparently so dead set on getting the most offensive-minded defenceman they can find. Can't afford Karlsson? Sure, let's go after Klingberg and Gostisbhere. Make if all else fails, they can coax Yandle out of retirement?

Is that really what they need? Are they just giving up on the idea of playing defence altogether, and just hoping they can be on offense all the time?

So the past few years has shown 6-6.5 million in cap space is worth a 1st. So if Sanjose is willing to retain down to 9.5 then you could probable get another team to retain 1.5/year for a 1st. So EK would be at 8 million

If Edmonton was willing to pay another 1st for an extra ~$1.5m in retention then SJ would likely take that pick without needing to involve a third team.
