He's won at every level and was abruptly fired by Toronto. Then he sits out for a while collecting money while his contract expires, gets hired by Columbus, and once again was fired very publicly for something he probably feels was targeted or unfair. Now he's done collecting money a second time after his settlement is over, and here we are. Coaches and players usually want to walk away on their own terms, not anyone elses. He probably feels robbed of that opportunity and also scapegoated.
Hate the guy, but given how he's still privately advised coaches around the league, this doesn't surprise me. He's a great coach, with obvious shortcomings personally. Oilers need to win now, you can't get much better. If shit goes south, its not like McDavid wasn't already on the clock anyway.
Did he get to collect any of the CBJ deal?
He resigned rather than get relieved of duties.
I know he collected every penny of the Toronto deal before signing with the Blue Jackets.
If he truly thought he had been aggrieved by the hooplah around his resignation, he would have sued for breach of contract (against the team and/or league), or libel/slander (against all the people who cost him the contract).
He did neither in order to avoid the investigation into his conduct.
