Just a single game in October so it really doesn't mean very much at all... But it certainly isn't going to silence any critics, that goaltending and defense was on display tonight.

Yup and the other day I had Oilers fans pinging me all day because I suggested their defense and goaltending might be a problem. What do I know though

This is the start to their "Stanley Cup or bust" season? LMAO

Seems the team, just like the fans feel like its just going to be given to them.

I am sure you know a lot. Hopefully one of the things you know is not to jump to conclusions after one game.

Of course. My conclusion isn't based on 1 game though, it's based on knowing their team. I can confidently say the Oilers are not going 0-82 with a 8GAA this season.

However, I can confidently say they are not winning anything this year unless massive changes are made in goal and on D AND their forwards learn what defense means instead of cherry picking for points.

Yeah, you gotta have high confidence that 0-82 won't be their season record.

Anyone mention goaltending?
I’m a little shocked their management came into this season with a clear conscious without addressing goaltending after their last postseason. That Campbell contract is a real problem for them and Skinner isn’t a guy I’d ever let hold my teams cup chances with.

I didn't buy the 2023 hype, and won't buy into this one, especially after last night's performance.

Nice to see Campbell start where he left off though.

They will win it if they're on the PP a lot through out the season.

During the playoffs when they whistles are away and theyre forced to play 5 on 5 theyre toast

no lol a team whos gonna win the cup doesn't lose 8-1 on opening night lmao. also mcdavid is not a true leader like crosby was with the penguins hes more of a stat padder which makes it even more funny him whining about the other team when up big.

Holland is committed. Skinner is a decent backup, but the problem is he’s already committed to campbell. Also still in flat cap hell, Edmonton has no,choice to sink or swim with these 2 guys.

the campbell contract was super risky because he gave him a 5 mil caphit to a goalie who has a history of being injured and most games he’s played in a year is 49, and Campbell is 31. Alarm bells should be going off on a goalie whose 30+ and most games in a year is 49, and Holland wants to sign him to 5x5…moron.

I think the limited goaltending market is the main culprit to be honest.

Honestly though 1 game doesn't change my mind on them being a top contender.

People getting excited over 1 game, especially the first game of the season are getting carried away. The one benefit of the game is hopefully all the annoying talk by reporters about the Stanley Cup and constantly asking Oilers players and the coach about the Stanley Cup before they have even played game 1 of an 82 game regular season is asinine. It is pretty silly for anyone to be talking about the Stanley Cup right now. That is a long ways away for any team.

They are still a contender but I am not buying that they are favourites.

A lot of Oilers had career years last year and the most likely guy to repeat that is probably McDavid. He might get 150 again but the rest of them? They aren’t repeating their season and goaltending is a massive massive issue for them.

I think there are only two favourites. Vegas and Carolina. They seem perfect.

It was nice to see the Oilers get absolutely humuliated and their captian cry to the media after the game, but it’s just one game.
