Don't take the bait, don't jeopardize the winning culture we are starting to build here. Let the bag chasers go knowing they're easily replaced with short-term UFA signings who will have much more of an impact over the next two seasons than either guy at this point in their careers.

Broberg wasn't going to magically fix the right side of the D, and Holloway wasn't going to out-performer a Skinner or RV this year. Hell, he may not even have outpointed Savoie. We can easily sign a Vrana, JVR, Hoffman or Pacioretty to play 3LW and one of Schultz or Barrie as 3RD. Meanwhile you let Holloway and Broberg wallow on a team fast approaching irrelevancy.

Tyson would happily come back on a $1M contract I'd think, did he even manage to sell his house here? I would happily take the risk of seeing what Ekholm/Bouch, Nurse/Ceci, and Kulak/Barrie could do with the deadline plan being to upgrade on Ceci, and then build a killer top nine out of McDrai, Hyman, Nuge, Skinner, RV, Henrique, Savoie and whoever the UFA signing ends up being.

Broberg was an 8th defenseman most of the season playing in the AHL was he good in the playoffs yes he was but he also had fresh legs against battle-fatigued teams is he worth 4.6 million nope. The Oilers can use that 2nd at the trade deadline for a much better dman for a playoff run, cut ties. Holloway is ready to break out that could be a bargain contract, that one will be matched

You can't trade a player you've matched an offer sheet on for 1 year.
Thanks för that info, hadnt a clue, OS happens so rarely.

Had big hopes for Broberg coming season, he had a great playoff run. Like those D who can move out of trouble. But we cant match that OS.

Doesnt look good on D side, ifnt Nurse bounces back big time, cant play Ceci even at 3 pair.

Good for both Hollywood and Broby. Team doesn't want to sign you and drags their feet? Honestly go for it.

Welcome to the top 9, Matt Savoie. Wrong side, but we've got a logjam up front anyways.

This absolutely destroys our defence plans this year. What have we got left (right), Phil Kemp? What's on the market and affordable, Mark Giordano? Calendar Addison?

The offer sheet was just made, season has been over for two months every other clubs got their RFA's signed for decent contracts

Agents of other teams have been able to talk to players for those 2 months. The Blues didn’t just wake up this morning and say “f*** it, let’s f*** up the Oilers cap today”. This thing has undoubtably been in the works for some weeks hence why the two players hadn’t signed yet but we’re waiting on the offer sheets to transpire.

Has to the the oilers picks used in offersheet. Blues just re acquired these picks for the purpose of offersheeting
So we are going to make trades to get back some picks for offersheets? Don't see it happening. But if Drai doesn't sign then maybe as they will have some cap space.

Bowman has dealt with offer sheets before…

SJ offersheeted Hjalmarsson, Bowman matched but it cost Chicago Andrew Ladd, Marty Reasoner(whom they just acquired from ATL but at $1 million cap hit even he was to costly) and also Antti Niemi(he wanted $500,000 more than the Hawks again could afford) the Sharks then signed Niemi…
But Bowman saw that Hjalmarsson was an integral part of the Hawks…

A 2nd and 3rd for Broberg and Holloway isn’t nearly enough

Bye bye Evander Kane, Brett Kulak or Cody Ceci…

Why would they take less money, and MUCH less in Broberg's case?

For you guys blaming Jeff Jackson for this, I haven't yet seen a reason that makes sense.
Yup, it's been reported that the Blues were in contact with Broberg and Holloways agents at the start of the offseason. They were holding out for this offer sheet, they werent signing until it happened.

St Louis can offer a lot more than we could. We wouldn't sign them to these numbers in a million years. They aren't worth it, take the picks and thank them for thier service and tell them to enjoy their new money. I hold no Ill will towards them. BUT look at what happened to the other players that chased the bag and left us, namely Kostin and Yammo, both are crashing out of the league faster than you'd think. Broberg has 8 good games to his name, Holloway has more, but is still unproven. Theres no way you match these contract.

Nope, you keep Kulak, Kulak is 10 times the player Broberg is, especially a Broberg that we'd get over this contract.

More like bye bye Broberg and Holloway.

Contenders don't get rid of established NHLers so they can overpay unproven prospects. That's some sunk cost fallacy shit right there.

With Kane going LTIR it's pretty easy to just sign Holloway. I don't understand why people are assuming both are gone?

The team had already offered them contracts...they chose to wait for other offers.

Only part that doesn’t make sense for Holloway is the fact he could have had his name on the cup a year from now. Makes sense for bigger opportunities more ice time higher in the line-up on a retooling blues team, more money.

Just shitty as an oil fan
*might* have his name on a cup, but WILL have 2.3 mil in his bank account. No brainer. Holloway is a reckless player. It makes sense for him to get the money, he's a forecheck away from injuring himself.

Yeah I was thinking you match but now I’m starting to think it’s more important not to let other teams dictate your cap space. I’m thinking now maybe let them walk. Use the picks to acquire players at the TDL.

It's like people can't grasp that there are two parties involved in a contract negotiation.

"Should have signed them sooner!" No shit, Sherlock, but unfortunately there are agents and players involved in the process too. Any agent that isn't stupid knows what the Oilers had the capacity to pay Holloway and Broberg. I guarantee that even if the Oilers aggressively pursued contracts with them on July 1 their agent is probably saying "thanks, but we'll see if a sheet comes our way, if not we'll tie it up before camp."

Not a single RFA without arbitration rights is helping themselves by signing a deal early unless it's for good money. Anyone staring down the barrel of a 1X$1/1.5 deal would be frankly stupid to not wait out the summer to see what they get, especially if they're with a cap strapped team.

These players obviously knew the Blues were going to offer something.

I mean even if the Oilers had 6M in cap space would this be an instant match? Probably not. That tells you it’s not only a cap space issue, it’s a contract structure issue.
