Listening to Dusty right now all the main twitter personalities are saying we aren’t matching either OS

I don't think that's a fair comparison unless we truly do nothing with the cap space.

Even if we do nothing with it going into the season, it will be huge at the deadline.
This is what I don't get. Why wait until the deadline to make a push? Plus, won't Kane be back before season's end anyway?

Damned if you do damned if you don’t. They match and the same people upset now would be crying about the overpay.

Let’s see what they do with the cap space
I wanted them to match, quality high upside young Dmen are like gold in this league and they let one walk that they developed for 5 years after creating enough space to match. I could see this being a Petry situation all over again, very easily.

I think this management has some arrogance to them thinking that they can find a Dman no problem and maybe sending an FU to the players as well for signing elsewhere.

We are worse today than last week but unfortunately cap space is really important. You can’t just throw around bad or undeserved contracts. 4.6m is crazy based on Brobergs history. 2.3m for Holloway isn’t crazy but he ends up losing his value based on cap hit and next QO.

Guess we will see what Broberg turns into. Playing with Parayko will probably be good for him though. If he’s better on the left side and wants to play on the left side, I don’t know where he would fit on our roster.

It sucks but I think its the right play to just move on. They will eventually use the cap space and picks to upgrade the team.

I think they were also arrogant to assume that Holloway and Broberg weren't going anywhere.

Holloway to Podklozin and Broberg to Emberson are clear downgrades now and especially long term. Now the Oilers do get nearly $5m in cap space by not matching but the Oilers are clearly a worse team as of today if they don't match these offers.

I think this is a bad idea not to match but we'll see how it plays out. Not happy about this, at all.
What is the 5M used for. Since right now lots keep parroting this.

You needed to trade Kane if he would waive or two of Henrique kulak skinner to run a full roster when Kane is off ltir.

So yeah those two specific moves are downgrades but when you factor in cap useage matching is a bigger downgrade

This is a no-win situation so I’ve come around on not matching to maintain more flexibility. We may regret not matching Broberg but there’s an equally large chance we really regret keeping him at over $4M and it hampers our ability to improve the team.

Hopefully we find a good use for the 2nd and 3rd.

For this season it seems fine. We will still upgrade the team (or Ceci wouldn't have been traded)

For Future Seasons? Yikes (no young talent)

the FACT that he was drafted 8th overall. You really can't overestimate how important that is to your actual production 5 years later. It is way more important than actual progression since the draft.

Things are not that black and white as easy as that makes the narrative in your head.

Ceci and VD are entirely replaceable but losing the growth potential of Broberg is a big loss IMO even if it came at a $4.6m pricetag. Good luck finding another young Dman with top 4 potential, now they'll have to scour the market for the Sean Walkers of the world. Color me unimpressed.

If Broberg goes on to be a 10 year top 4 Dman on St. Louis, the Oilers brass will be kicking themselves for years to come and I think this is a good possibility tbh.
My exact sentiments

Youre kind of just reading into this. They could’ve done that without trading Ceci.

IMO the goal here is to have cap space and flexibility.

This is the only part that doesn’t make sense to me. Trading a popular teammate when you weren’t planning on matching is kind of strange even though I do think they like Emberson a lot.
Popular doesn’t win games. I don’t want a guy playing way above his playing ability on the team just because he’s popular. Ceci is not a good hockey player. They moved out a bad hockey player, for a younger one who I would bet is better next season and saved a bunch of cap space. Having Ceci on this current roster would not make it any better IMO.
