Stetcher and Emberson were playing regularly…on 2 of the worst teams in the league last year

A team with a competent D corps has them playing in #7 role at best
Not top 4 on the supposed “Cup contender”
Florida won the cup last year with many cast offs; Mikkola, Kulikov, Ekman-Larsson & Forsling.

It was first reported on capfriendly, when that was still an entity, that Desharnais was a two-way contract but I'm pretty sure that was a mistake and it is a one-way contract.

They overpaid on that for sure.
Two million isn't an overpayment.
I get leaving for a rival stings, I feel the same way about Podz but I took part in many convos here about how well he was playing and the positive effect he had with Nurse, or how he was a big part of turning things around.

Kane has a hernia, bad hip, bad shoulder and wrist issues that could be cleaned up. That will probably take a whole season.

He heals up this year and it will extend his career. If he comes back early then you trade someone. Doesn't have to be Kulak.
I'm not even sure Kane will have surgery. Why the wait? Usually surgery is done sooner rather than later. Based on comps I could find it's anywhere from 2-5 months and Kane seems like a guy who would work his ass off to get back asap. The guys a warrior.

I can't remember which insider said it on a pod last week but I want to say Friedman, but basically they said that the surgeons and specialists are usually on their own summer holidays this time of year so often it can be a wait to get in with them.

I don't think NHL players are allowed to just book in to the hospital with Dr. Joe Blow, I'm sure their insurances are tied to specific practitioners that deal with professional athletes

Yup. He also said there was probably some discussion between the team and Kane's camp on which surgeon they wanted doing the surgeon that also slowed things down.

I'll reiterate that I was never a fan of the Broberg pick in the 1st place... and never saw the upside in the player that others did... great skater... and that's about it and that doesn't make a great NHL dman.

He had a decent playoff run so full credit there... but for his new "forced" pricetag... nah... he ain't all that and I honestly doubt that Broberg will be any better than Stecher or Emberson this season. I'm not saying Broberg is a bust... but you are now having to pay him 2nd pairing type money (if they match) so expectation has to be that he will perform like a solid 2nd pairing player... and I just don't like those odds... especially when there are other options available when you are talking paying him 4.6 million for 2 years. If you have that type of budget you can get a better and much more of a "sure thing" 2nd pairing dman from somewhere at the deadline... and just fill the holes in the D with guys like Emberson/Stecher/Brown and/or someone else in free agency for cheap in the regular season until then.

If things really go sideways in the regular season and a playoff spot is actually at risk... well you may be forced to make a trade sooner... so be it but if they match Broberg (and they can't use the waiver strategy to get rid of him) and he sucks... they are chained to this guy like a dead cap weight that basically restricts even being able to improve the team at the deadline.

As a side note I find it really odd that you can't later waive a guy that you match... if he absolutely sucks it's like he has a no movement clause for the entire year and you can't even waive him to the AHL? Seems like a stupid provision... where you then basically have to pressbox him for the entire season... how is that good for the team or the player?

Let’s hope the Oilers know a doctor that likes long vacations. And delays. And missed appointments. We need to stretch Kane’s LTIR length until the playoffs. I don’t care how many excuses Jackson will have to BS to Bettman. And then have Bowman take over and start BSing. LTIR Kane until playoffs, call it “to ensure he’s 100% healthy due to all the health scares lately and PTSD from the skate cut. Who’s to say otherwise.

Time to replicate the Mark Stone.

Funny to read about all the concern that Broberg might fail when it's also a strong consideration that he succeeds. Exceedingly rare for a black ace d-man to step into Final Four Cup competition and keep his head above water. This organization has taken an average NHL d-corp and incredibly made it worse. Injuries and we're into the Ben Gleason era.

Shaving the winning window with little NHL ready (or certain) talent.
It's not so clear that the defense is or will be worse in the short run. It may be that Broberg takes a step forward and that it will become worse than it would have been otherwise, but right now he really is a kid with promise. It's actually quite conceivable that the combination of Stecher and Emberson will be as good as Ceci and Broberg in terms of this year. But the big unkown is how long that combination of players will be asked to carry to load. If the Oilers don't match I'd be shocked if the plan is not to use the assets they get as part of a deal to upgrade the RHD hopefully on a more permanent basis.

I am not happy that the Oilers ended up in this predicament by any stretch, but to be honest I am surprised at how well they have done so far in managing it.

I don't see what the problem is with keeping Broberg. Just trade kulak for another righty. We lose our 3 bottom D, and gain new hope. Organic improvement with broberg on the left side, starting on 3rd pairing. We're deep there to cover for injuries. The new additions on the right side, can fight for 2nd/3rd pairing. It's not like it's hard to upgrade Ceci.

Unless Kane is out all year, you wouldn't have the cap space to swap Kulak for another righty (unless they're making near league min).

If Broberg's back, then you're going to have to run both him and Nurse with the likes of Stecher, Emberson, Brown, Kemp and maybe Lindstrom if you offer a PTO.

Ekholm-Bouchard
Nurse-Stecher/Emberson
Broberg-Stecher/Emberson/Brown
Brown

And again: You will have no way to upgrade that. If Broberg caps out at a Valimaki-level player, your cup dreams are more or less dead.

If you keep Kulak, you're in a similar situation to start with, but that extra 2mil + 2nd means you've got the cap space + assets to upgrade. Getting someone like Connor Murphy at 50% or even a guy like Will Borgen wouldn't be out of the question.

Compare the group above to this

Ekholm-Bouchard
Nurse-Emberson/Stecher
Kulak-Murphy
Stecher/Emberson

For this upcoming year, which group do you feel better going into the playoffs with? For me, it's 100% the latter. If you don't like Stecher/Emberson with Nurse, you can also target a guy like Fabbro.

Would be funny if Oilers let them go and instantly trades Blues picks to more proven / better players and also cheaper ones.

Broberg gets match is guess. Why trade Ceci with a 3rd if we are not marching him?
