absolutely hilarious they've almost been shutout SIX TIMES in 25 games...that's almost once every 4 games!

their forward group is ranked 28th in the NHL for goals scored...that was supposed to be their strength lol

It's almost as if other teams are some how "scouting" the Oilers with magical technology in some way.

You want to be a Cup contender, this is part of it. Teams will play you with playoff intensity and they will scout every one of your pet plays the moment they see you are in a Cup Final because congratulations you are now officially on the "team that every other team marks on their calendar when you come to town" category.

The Oilers want the cross-seam pass, teams are not cooperating and just giving it away to them.

We are not handling it well, the coaching staff especially seems surprised that "moar McDavid!" isn't actually much of an adjustment when the other team is already versed on everything they should be doing to slow McDavid.

You have to have some adjustments from your coach if the other team's coach is throwing 3-4 major adjustments your way.

Next guy who passes out of the slot to the points should be sat the next practice and forced to watch his teammates get bag skated on his behalf.

Knob has some guilt here too if he allows the forwards to do whatever they want. Just because your 5 year old wants candy for dinner doesn't mean you allow it.

The PP is the main culprit of the poor offense, I believe at this point last year they had 24 goals on the powerplay through 25 games.

This year they have 11 PP goals in 25 games.

That's a massive drop off. They actually are scoring more 5 on 5 so far this year.

Knob and Gulutzan are not doing their job making PP adjustments, they just keep running the same shit out there and Knob is OK with passive games where the team doesn't push for PP ops.

If I had a nickel for everytime I've seen this board rip on players and want them gone, then turn around a year or two later and actually try to talk about bringing them back I'd be filthy rich.

The tournament is a complete joke. I'd be more concerned if they actually did give a shit about some random thing thrown together without the vast majority of players being eligible.
Don't forget dubnyk.

The day we drafted mcdavid everyone was calling for trades here and there. If we had done absolutely nothing and made our picks, this team right now may have 3 cups already. It all started with griffin reinhart.

Anyone ever go through money pucks expected goals 1 by 1 and compare to eye test?

I find it interesting, at 15:51 of the 2nd period. Hertl walking into the slot uncontested, with full puck control, and a clear path to the net. Goes forehand, backhand top shelf, only to get robbed by a Skinner glove hand.

Chance to score off that Hertl shot: 10.5%

Meanwhile, 16:31 of the 2nd. Nurse shoots a puck, it rebounds to Perry at the net side, Perry flubs the shot and it trickles into Hill’s pad at 1MPH.

Chance to to score off that Perry shot: 22.7% (!!!!!!)

The best players from Canada, USA, Sweden, etc. will be there, that's significant enough to take seriously. Yeah it's a shame Russia won't be there, but there's obviously things beyond the NHL's control there (they probably wouldn't win anyway).

Anyone who doesn't take that seriously as a player doesn't have the desire to be great anyway.
Entirely disagree. It's a gimmick, one off tournament in the middle of a season. It holds no importance or relevance whatsoever. Any sort of best on best tournaments without Russia or the Czechs, hell even the Germans, isn't any sort of best on best at all.

You actually think there's going to be surprise studs that come out of nowhere that wouldn't have already been in line for the Olympics?
I think players who could be on the bubble making the Olympic roster could tremendously help their cause with a strong tournament.

Or do you think the Olympic team is a lock?

Somehow the Oilers came into this season with NINE (count 'em) former 30-goal scorers on the roster, plus an 80+ point offensive defenceman, and the story of the season is... they can't score.

While Connor and Leon do need to shoot more, the main problem, as I see it, is the bottom six. They're too slow and don't drive the net enough. Your bottom six needs to be rugged and difficult to play against. Their lack of speed doesn't help, making them easy to defend.

The bottom six needs to go out to wear down and tire out the opponent's defenders. The Oilers' bottom six has not been doing this enough.

Whole forward group needs to be greasier and drive the net more.

Anyone who doesn't care about representing their country in any kind of tourney like this is a loser frankly.

I get the some fans don't like but some fans complain about anything.

A lot is on Knoblaugh, I don't wanna hear there's no talent the fact is

McDavid
Draisaitl
Hyman
RNH
Henrique
Skinner
Arvidsson

(excl. Kane because he's injured)

Scored at about a 20 goal rate or better last season.

This year only McDavid and Draisaitl are on pace for 20 goals. You can try to blame this all on Jeff Skinner and Arvidsson, but how do you also account for the large drop off in Hyman and Henrique and RNH also being down?

If it's one or two 20 goal guys underperforming, fine, but *five* different players?

Knob is not making any offensive adjustments whereas other teams coaching staffs are making adjustments and he's not getting the most out of the players he does have.

Imagine if there was a 60 minute period to score a single goal against a team they're staring up at in the standings.

In 120 minutes against these guys we've scored twice. Vegas has won both games in regulation. The Oilers also don't hold the first tie breaker against Vegas so it's not like winning in overtime or a shootout would've done them all that much good.
Sometimes goalies have a team's number. This is part of hockey. It doesn't excuse that dog shit goa that Skinner gave up. There was no way in hell that the puck was going to the other skater.
No, the shit forwards cost the team a point last night...score a goddamn goal, do your job f***ing job

do you mean the awful turnover Draisaitl had to spring that 2 on 1? or what about the awful giveaway Caggulia had in the 2nd that Skinner made a huge save on?

maybe the Oilers should have invested more than 3.6 mil on this goalie tandem...paying below average cap-hits to players than expecting above-average results is foolish
Imagine that the Oiers didn't play a perfect game. Drai's turnover was a stupid one but Bouchard made a really good defensive play and Skinner misread and played that situation and an easy save ended up in our net.
So this chart proves what exactly about Stu Skinners game last night?

You frame the goal as a bad goal. I watched it several times...it was an unlucky goal. Pure and simple but then again I dont have an axe to grind.
Unlucky how? He should've been hugging his post and down. The puck was not going across. Stu mis-read and reacted slowly and it cost us.
dude, we are supposed to win 1-0 in a shootout now!
goals be damned
Just how tested was Stu last night? his workload seemed pretty easy by my eye. Did Vegas even get 20 shots on him? What do we need to hold them to for him to get a shutout? 3 shots over 60 minutes? That's a game that should've gone to OT period.
It’s funny to see this take in a thread where multiple people are blaming a 1-0 loss on the goaltender. If a goalie needs to pitch a shutout to not get roasted on this board the standards might be too high.

Skinner has been bad this year, I think everyone knows that. Doesn’t mean every bad thing that happens is his fault though.
The fact that we have to spot the team 1-2 goals a game because of poor goaltending is going to cost us again. Stu needs to be our back-up if we are going to win anything.

It’s a joke, that’s why nobody even cares about it. Not even a real best on best, so many of the best players in the world not there. Just another way for the league to suck more money out of the rah rah country dummies. Also a great way for guys to get injured and cost yourself a chance at a championship that actually matters.

Just like the worlds, you’d get lots of players declining to go if the league wasn’t cramming it down their throat.

We look bullied at net front. Our forwards just falling all over themselves trying to go full effort and getting a touch on a puck surrounded by the Redwood Forest that is the Knights defense.

Net front Battle Drills for Practice? These guys need to learn how to win battles in tight.

Honestly, I think they're going to stay inconsistent AF offensively until Kane is back.

They've got some decent skill upfront, but not a lot of guys that can win via size or speed. And while skill is nice, it alone doesn't get you far if you've got no one to open up ice and break down the defence.

RNH, Henrique, Skinner, Ryan, Brown are all smart players, but they don't force defences to sweat or grab an icepack once they come off the ice. Arvidsson can at least make defences work, but at the end of the day he's still a waterbug.
Plus while they're better than the group above, it's not like Hyman, Perry, and Podz are particularly big and imposing. They don't have many guys that can overpower or even just physically tax the opposition.

It's why a waiver wire pick up in Kapanen can stand out here, he at least brings something noticeable to the table.

The good news is adding Kane helps the top 9, Philp in for Ryan would also go a long way.
I couldnt agree more and even though its likely to be less than 10 minutes TOI thats the main reason why I would like to see Philp in for Ryan. Thats coming from a fan of Ryan and his work. Its not about Ryan...its about team needs.

This is a permiter team as it stands right now. They will do fine in wide open games but struggle in tight checking games. We see this time and time again and it isnt going to magically disappear without some roster changes.
Kane can be a difference maker in this regard but he is going to need at least a month or 2 just to get up to speed.

A goalie cant just hug the post on a 2 on 1. He has to try and anticipate the play that will be unfolding in front of him and thats exactly what he did.
Im not going to fault him for how things played out because that puck doesnt do what it ended up doing 99 times out of 100.
It was a flukey goal.
This isnt even close to being on the list of games to fault Skinner. This is an example of posters with an axe to grind who were frustrated by the result and projected that frustration on to a player they have been frustrated with in the past.

This Skinner glee club nonsense is a perfect example of that as well.
Posters on here looking at the game through an unfiltered lens get castigated for doing nothing other than being objective.
Ridiculous.

Maybe the team can score more than zero goals next time.

Does anyone know the reasoning behind this 4 nation tournament? I get why Russia isn’t involved but what about the Czechs? Germany? Switzerland?
4 teams just doesn’t bring any real excitement, it feels like fake all star filler to me.
