Oilers culture issues

I donno are they better or are they just playing more? Plus how is this even a topic Mcloed Broberg and Holloway were literally rockies that the oiler actually took time to develop properly and we're just entering the NHL (Broberg/Holloway) if anything it's the opposite and is a testament that the Oilers development program works and is doing a good a good job. It's more like management fumbling the offer sheet situation basically wasted years of development for no reason could of easily made it work

It's true though. Crosby will do anything for his team to win. McDavid seems to be more focused on personal goals. It's not McDavid's fault though, if the team is ok with that, then why not? Part of the culture in Edmonton. McDavid is bigger than the team and everyone is fine with that in Edmonton it seems.
I lose brain cells reading posts like this. You're blocked.

I could see this being true in 2017. What doesn’t McDavid do for his team in the playoffs that Crosby has done?.

Karlsson had the worst season of his career once he arrive in Pittsburgh. Looked good fir his first few games. Went south front there.
Matheson took off in Montreal.
Reilly was on top line winning cup with Knights. Went to Pens next season. Worst season of his career.
MCCann, Sullivan had no use for him. Left and scored forty goals for the Kraken.
Eler was good grinder in Washington. Ass in Pittsburg. Now playing well for the first place Caps again.
Granlund sucked in Pittsburgh. Playing well again after getting out.
Graves was pretty good before coming to Pitt. Dubas rewarded him with a huge deal. He's been terrible for the Pens. Petry great in Montreal. Sucked in Pittsburg.
I'm sure I'm leaving out a few.
Sullivan gets 5 to 6 new guys every summer. Needle never moves. Its like watching reruns of an old sitcom

The coaching staff only realized in the playoffs that it may be wiser to play Broberg over Desharnais
Imagine being an NHL coach today, and having both Broberg and Desharnais on your roster and having to pick one, and you go with Desharnais.

Seems impossible today.

A year ago was Broberg really that much worse a player?

…or was he just a guy that needed to be allowed to play without having to worry he’d get benched if he made a mistake?

Broberg is a glaring example but this type of decision making seems to happen all too often with coaches.

They are so stuck in the ‘I have to win right now’ mentality that they refuse to consider the other approach of ‘I might lose a few more games in the short term but if I let him develop and get some confidence he could really help us win a lot more games down the road’.

Always fascinating to see how cheaply someone is willing to forfeit their credibility ;)

Probably because Desharnais was putting in the work with the coaches after practice and Broberg wasn't.

Coaches tend to favour guys that listen and put a good effort in practice

Also, Desharnais was brought in to fill in two very specific roles - clog up the slot in front of our goalies, and kill penalties. He wasn't good at anything else. Those are two areas where Broberg wasn't excelling. He's not big and strong enough to tie guys up in front, and he just wasn't an elite penalty killer. Desharnais might not be good at much by NHL standards, but he certainly helped to shore up Edmonton's penalty kill last year.

The Oilers have always tried to take the easy way out. The team sucked so bad that they finished last overall and then they explicitly decided to suck for a few years while mediocre #1 picks fell into their lap until they got a gift from God. Rather than supplement him with a competent organization, the Oilers hired buddies that were responsible for the demise of their previous teams because that was the easy thing to do. The thing is if the team was even halfway good at scouting at any level (especially when it comes to the draft), they probably wouldn't have needed McDavid and Draisatl to be all world to even have a chance at a Cup. But the Oilers have really, really struggled at the draft table, especially past the first round where they might luck into a Ryan McLeod once every decade.

The Oilers stink of arrogance from the owner on down, always believing that they deserve to be rewarded rather than work for it. They've always seen McDavid as an easy ticket to a Stanley Cup while continually failing to surround him with a decent cast of players. The bottom six yet again is a complete black hole. They're forced to rely on Stuart Skinner because the guy their goalie coach scouted (Jack Campbell) was a complete disaster. The wings after Hyman are a complete joke. With McDavid having an off year (by his standards), they look destined not to win a Cup again unless everything banks right like it did last year.

I still remember Bob Nicholson singling out Tobias Reider as the reason we didn't make the playoffs a few years ago because he didn't score a single goal. Kevin Lowe once touted that he knows a thing or two about winning because of the rings he got as a player. They also named fans who critique the org as "second tier fans". They hate being questioned. They have their media shills constantly pick on easy targets on the ice. Even on HFOil some refuse to point the finger at anyone who isn't Skinner.

Just think of where we would be had they hired Zito instead of getting weak in the knees for the guy who dismantled the Red Wings.

Not quite as bad as Buffalo, but when you have economics and standard of living going against your team/city, you need to make it unbelievable to play there. I look at what the Panthers have done with their facilities and amenities. Every team should copy this.

Because that’s not what people are laughing at, everyone’s injured in the playoffs.

"Everyone" is a generalization. And there are different degrees of injuries. Most players are fatigued and have minor bumps and bruises. Broken bones are an entirely different thing. Not everyone has multiple fractures in the playoffs, which is what Draisaitl had. I'm not using it as an excuse. It's a reality.

Every team has injuries, some worse than others. Some power through, some don’t/cant.

And Draisaitl's was one of the worse ones. A broken hand and broken ribs. He "powered through" by even playing the games when most of us wouldn't even get out of bed.

I'm not making excuses as to why the Oilers lost. I was responding to people that called him a "lifetime loser" and making predictions that he'll never win a cup. Maybe he will. Maybe he won't. No one knows.

This is based on… what, exactly?
