Great effort, great chances, too bad.

Beautiful loss right there. To have 2 of these in 2 straight games is extremely strange. Only the Blues.

Im pretty sure that its just a case of being snake-bitten. But in case its not, Im going to have to go off the reservation to find the reasons for these losses.

Too many shots. Too much possession. Worked too hard. We need to suck more. Goaltenders need to see more Grade A chances so they know what they look like.

Not true. Before these 4 games and even after the 3rd game they were top 10 in GF.

Still, the point does stand to some degree.

This team scores in bunches and they rarely score more than 3 goals in a game.

The current formula relies on us limiting the opposing team to 1 or 2 goals so we can barely outscore them. Our defense needs to be better than our offense to keep winning in this formula. On nights that our defense or goaltending is shakey, it's unlikely our offense can bail us out. The offense needs to be better for this team to take the next step.

sorry, folks. This team doesn't deserve to make the playoffs. Way too inconsistent.
Nah, they definitely deserve to make the playoffs, they aren't that bad. But they don't deserve to go very far in the playoffs (as in, not past the 2nd round again).

Lou Korac ‏@lkorac10 14m

Me thinks #stlblues having a closed door meeting right now. Airing out the dirty laundry.
Kind of surprised to hear that, but then again I think our upcoming games have a lot to do with this as well (Kings, Wild, Blackhawks are the next 3).

Bottom line is the Blues can't afford to go on a losing skid here, and they have got to make a statement game against LA. They tried last time and we know how that ended up, but on home ice they have got to send a message to LA and to themselves that they can beat them. LA is in our heads, they are a good team but they shouldn't be able to dominate us like they do. We've got to play one of our best games of the year Thursday. Gonna be interesting.

So our last two games before trade deadline
Los Angeles March 28th
@ Minnesota April 1st

So if these two games go badly I wonder what Army is going to do.

well that explains everything, thank you
So did that rebuttal. Fact is, scoring hasnt been the issue until just very lately. GA were the issue. Maybe you should take some time and run back through the scores of the games they have lost this season.

Army has generally been a rather shrewd GM, IMO. I hope he stays that way for the foreseeable future.

How is that possible? Before this game, The Blues were averaging just shy of 3 goals per game. If they have scored only 1 and 2 goals in some games, and been shut out, they've had to have had almost as many games scoring over 3 as under (unless they've been winning only a few games scoring over 10 (which they haven't).

How sure are you to say that the Blues have scored less than 3 goals per game more than any of the other contenders to call that the issue? Check the stats. The Goaltending and defense is the issue. Scoring is not.

You guys were watching this team give up 3-5 goals every game, right? Do you guys think its easy to score when the other team is up early and they go into a defensive shell? Do you think its easy to score 4 goals every game? Because on this road trip and this game where it seemed every chance ended up in their net, that's what they would of had to score to win.

Yep. I also have eyes.

I dont need to defend common sense. You want to hate on them and overreact based on two games that they should have won had they gotten maybe one bounce early? Have at it.

Every team gets shut out at some point. Doesn't mean that team lacks scoring power overall.

look, it's obvious this team has issues beyond goal scoring, but that is one of them. you can post stat after stat but it doesn't change the fact that this is one of the most offensively inept teams in the league. did you feel like they were gonna come back and win at any point tonight?

their power play is still ranked in the top 5 for christ's sakes and they haven't scored on it since like january or something.

Agreed fully. Thursday suddenly became a huge, season-defining game.

Do you have a point here? All you are doing is complaining that they didnt score 4 goals tonight. Are they offensively inept? Not even close. Are they in a slump or facing some good goaltending? Thats a better argument.

You do realize that even when the PP has been silent they have still managed to score some goals? They havent been shut out every night.

I have stats and logic to back me up, what are you relying on here?

LOTR-nerd OT: if you're making an amalgamation of Jaromir Jagr's name and a LOTR character, wouldn't Faramir be a closer pronunciation?

Can I get a nice summary of tonights game since my recorrding seems like a waste of my time now.

I went to the game and this is what I got from the game.

Blues started off the 1st period slow, they dominated and looked like they weren't even trying. They were overly confident since beating Edmonton so easily just a week ago that they could get by without having to put too much work in.

2nd Period started and play picked up a little bit but lead to 2 quick odd man rush goals. After that we started playing more physical and continued to dominate for the rest of the game, other than actually getting the puck into the net.

We had way too many chances to make a sweet pass to a guy open in the slot, yet we carried it to the outside and make a pass to the point only to get pokechecked and lead to an odd man rush.

My views on players tonight.

Pietrangelo: Awful, absolute garbage. He needs to pick up his skating speed if he is going to continue to step up in the offensive zone or neutral zone and get burnt EVERY SINGLE TIME.

Polak: Jesus Christ! Can you settle the puck once in your life? I know Polak is the least offensively gifted of our D, but there is no reason an NHL caliber player should create so many turnovers as he did tonight. Not to mention he CANNOT stop a puck from clearing the offensive zone to save his life.

Stewart: He looked good at times but with the puck tonight he kind of looked like the Stewart from last year. He wasn't shooting when he usually has this season, he should have made some slick passes but held on to the puck too long and/or made the wrong pass instead of the right one. Didn't play bad but not up to the Stewart standards we have seen this whole year.

Backes: Oh. My. Dear. ****ing. Lord. His physical game was much much better but he turned the puck over and made so many terrible blind passes, he was simply atrocious. Not to mention every shot he had was right at the goalie's chest.

Halak: Hey do you have any rebound control? You don't... Anyways he didn't let up a goal but I've never seen a goalie has worse rebound control than Halak has. Not only that he just looks shaky, looked over his back way too many times a goalie should. Wasn't really challenged a whole lot during the game, but god help him if he faced a quality shot.

Allen: Wasn't his fault, they had 3 scoring chances and capitalized on all of them. First goal he could have saved but I think he relied too much on Jackman blocking the pass. Second goal was just a roofer. Third goal, lol, what was he supposed to do? not have Eberle drill him to the boards?

Frank: Was our best player tonight, great hustle, great moves, shot the puck a lot, and his defensive game is starting to pick up more.

Schwartz: Don't like him on the 4th line but regardless I love his work ethic and his play. When moved to center Tarasenko they looked great, at times there was a little confusion but I think their playstyles will compliment each other very well for years to come. Is Hitch trying to turn Schwartz into a center? I can't say he did bad but as he grows into a man's body and with practice, I think he could be an effective 2-Way Playmaking Center. Think of Steen but more of a playmaker than a shooter.

Sobotka: Was Sobtoka, no complaints.

Berglund: Were you on the ice? Because you were invisible.

Oshie: Played a decent game, but pissed me off quite a bit because of how many times he failed to clear the puck out of the defensive zone.

Shattenkirk: Not bad but not great

Russell: I think Russell looked fine.

Perron: Not bad but sometimes I wish he would make a pass to Tarasenko who gets open for a perfect one-timer. I think he has just been accustomed to playing the perimeter which needs to be fixed if he is playing on a line with Frank. He played with the puck too much at times and made some questionable passes.

Porter: Porter came out throwing his body around, showing off his speed, and was just everywhere. Loved his game and which is why he got bumped up a few lines for awhile tonight.

Redden: Had a decent game but when he did turn the puck over it was just like

Andy (Speed down the wing and lose the puck right after you enter the zone) Mcdonald: Pretty self explanatory from the name I gave him. He's become almost a useless player. He had a few good passes but overall does not make up for his lack of puck control.

I shouldn't have used the word rarely.

The Blues have scored more than 3 goals in 12 of their 32 games (roughly 38%) this season. Much like the powerplay, most of the success of scoring more than 3 goals came early in the year (42% of the more than 3 goal games came in January). They haven't been strong offensively for multiple games since January.

Goals For per month
Jan - 28 GF/07 games = 4.00 G/G
Feb - 27 GF/12 games = 2.25 G/G
Mar - 35 GF/13 games = 2.69 G/G (so far)

Goals Against per month
Jan - 14 GA/07 games = 2.00 GA/G
Feb - 41 GA/12 games = 3.41 GA/G
Mar - 34 GA/13 games = 2.61 GA/G (so far)

As you can see, the defense/goaltending has rebounded by reducing the number of GA/G by 0.8 where as the offense has rebounded by only 0.44 G/G. If the Blues plan to make the playoffs this year, the offense is going to have to get much better. The defense/goaltending needs to continue to improve at this pace as well.
