Offseason Trade Targets

I wouldn't be giving any 1st round prospects for Pettersson. Cap hit is high and I am not convinced he just needs a change of scenery, as he put up 2 pts at the Olympics, so if it was team related, theoretically he should have been better at the Olympics.
They have to evaluate that knee problem. Everything depends on that.

Barkov was already able to rehab it in a perfect way.

Those can be done. Yzerman knows it pretty well about his own experiment.

I want MORE!
Utah is operating from a position of, 'Our rebuild is working...we have a playoff team with several young players and several kids on the way.'

Why would they offer more? There's a chance they don't pursue Larkin at all.

I think Detroit has two angles they can use to try get a team like Utah to accelerate their timeline:
1) In a few more years it'll get a lot tougher with having to contend with San Jose. That looks like a potential juggernaut once the kids get on their feet.
2) Bringing in Larkin improves their chances of landing one or more of his Team USA buddies. Based on their forum, they would be very interested in going after Brady Tkachuk.

So it would take some persuading about why being patient has some challenges to counteract the cost certainty.

Utah is dealing for Larkin because their time is now. Cooley is 22, but look at the ages for all of the other movers and shakers in that lineup - they are 25-30. For as good as Desnoyer and Iginla could be, they're both likely at least three years out from being real contributors. Utah can wait on that, but go thru their lineup and add 2-3 years onto everyone. Some of those guys, especially their blueline and goalie, start looking pretty grey haired by NHL standards.

I think Utah looks at this and sees Larkin giving them that legit 1-2 punch down the middle right now. I would bet they are also looking at Alex Tuch. Noise has been that he's likely looking to move west to be closer to family. Vancouver is awful, Seattle isn't much better, but Utah is in a good position to offer him a nice paycheck and the opportunity to win. SJ and Anaheim can make a similar pitch, but Utah with Larkin looks further along to me. And Tuch might just not like Cali taxes.

Also, I think the western conference is wide open right now. All of the top teams have issues, whether it be positional depth, age, inexperience, etc. Good time to try to jump in and be a big player, imo.

I completely agree that this SHOULD be the mindset for Utah. But any discussion on this site inherently revolves around how amazing and can't-miss every single prospect is, so it's tough to know if it's just fanbois and their GM thinks more like you and I do.

Here's to hoping.

If given the opportunity to legitimately push to win, I think every GM makes that push. The fact that Yzerman hasn't pushed harder I think tells us everything we need to know about how he felt about our chances the past few years.

Mtl guy … Beniers is available? …. What’s the cost for mctavish if we pass off Larkin to Utah

They’ll want Anton johansson for sure f***, hope we’d get another righty to flip them

Sorry had no idea was in French for some reason was auto translated when I saw it 😂 basically saying habs gotta make they’re moves soon cause he suspects players will get dealt prior to the draft

I could care less about his wife. If she can live at Vancouver, she can live at Detroit too.

This is not UFA situation where you can just pick the destination.

LAK still don't have the assets to give for Vancouver.
But Elias does, happy wife & happy life. Distance between LA and Vancouver is way shorter than LA and Detroit and ain't Vancouver/BC some sort of "Hollywood of Canada"?

NMC.

They have draft picks, which Vancouver can use or move for other assets. And their prospect pool doesn't give much to cheer on

Pettersson has a full NMC. So he can absolutely veto a trade if he doesn't like the destination.

If Pettersson is available and willing to come to us, in no way should his contract be of concern to us at this point. If VAN is honestly looking to move off from a 27yo Center who is somewhere between a 0.6ppg to 1.2ppg at his 11.5M/yr at a discounted price... we should be first in line. His contract in no way hurts us in any way, and he is capable of filling the 1C even at his absolute worst. At his best? He's a Top 5 Center.

I'm much more worried about his performance, which is sucky at best for the money.

I'm with you so far...

...and you lost me. What has he done in the last two seasons to prove he can be anywhere near a 1C? He looks closer to quitting hockey than being capable of resurrecting his career.

So my greedy ass offer is good then?

Lol, idk about that... He logged 18 minutes, points way down; but still takes 'something' to want to block 100 plus shots as a forward in a year. Shit hurts like a MF'er sometimes.

He's only available because he is playing down;

He's got real medical issues to look at. His leg/knee plus an injury he's played through all this year. I personally don't want him unless Wings want to compete or try and compete. Like they get a pretty good package/players for Larkin but no one great.

Also hard for me to say he'd rather be here vs LA when I know what's going on with his wife and her lifestyle. All three teams in Cali would take him (Ducks/Kings/Sharks) for the right deal and I think Elias himself would waive for them over the Red Wings.

The Kings are interested and have been rumored to have made a trade offer involving Quinton Byfield, 2026 first-round pick, and former first-round pick Henry Brzustewicz.

Idk how serious this is; author provides no link, etc, but another rumored offer on the table.
