Fobert and Gravel didn't get much playing time last season because the Kings were all in and couldn't risk missing the playoffs again. Simple as that. No matter how great the upside is for either defenceman, they need time to reach NHL level. While guys like Scuderi, McBain and Erhoff are not the best options, they were already NHL level and had experience, which is best for the short term and to make the playoffs.

However, after our first round exit, DL understands that this team is not a contender now and the Kings need to take a step back and look at the 3-5 year plan instead of going all in again next year. Fobert and Gravel will get a fair shake next year because of this change in philosophy and also considering that because of the cap and lack of options, we likely wont get a Trouba or Barrie.

Good or bad, I just hope we bury Scuderi in the minors, somehow trade Greene, and run with Fobert and Gravel next year. I would also like to take another look at Jeff Schultz. He was great in the Ducks playoffs series and never really got another real chance to make the big club.

First highlight: At no point last year was missing the playoffs in jeopardy.
Second highlight: I agree 100%

What's frightening is that he was the last defenseman the team drafted who became a regular in the lineup.

The next one who has that potential is Gravel who was selected in 2010.

Guess we'll have to wait and see what becomes of him, Ladue and Cernak as they likely have the highest potential of all the dmen the Kings have selected since 2008.

How is that frightening? Look at the lineup the Kings have had, and planned on having. They got lucky that Muzzin turned into a top 2/3 defenseman, but that's Pittsburgh's fault I guess. Like was said, if Voynov doesn't screw all sorts of things up, the Kings aren't scrambling for a defenseman right now.

I guess they should've taken Ekman-Larsson in 2009, but wasn't he sort of a reach at the time? I don't exactly remember, but I do know a lot of people were saying Schenn was a terrific prospect. Barrie went at 64. Ekholm and 102. Vatanen at 106. Could've taken Justin Faulk in 2010, but he went 37th. Or Klingberg at 131. No defenseman after the Kings picked in 2011 has done anything. Could've taken Gostisbehere or Parayko instead of Pearson at 30 in 2012, but they went 78th and 86th. No D-man in 2013 after the Kings picked has done much. Nobody in 2014 or 2015 yet either.

It was letting go Purcell and Moulson before the Cup wins. Now, after a couple less than great season after the Cup wins, it's about all the missed picks. We're talking about the NHL equivalent of a needle in a haystack, where it works both ways for every team. Sure, Forbort was picked figuring that 6 years later, he'd be a regular by now, but there also wasn't supposed to be a worry about the 2nd pair right handed defenseman either. Life, and the draft, can be weird that way.

The playoffs are always in jeopardy. Hell, we blew what was it, a 20 point lead in the division to the Ducks who were dead last. No matter how many points you accumulate, there is always a real risk of getting out of the playoff race if you take bad skids and a few teams get on fire.

Not in this years pacific..there was no way LA was falling behind Vancouver or Arizona

Kevan Miller just re-signed with Boston for 4 years at 2.5M AAV. the market for defenseman just got a whole lot scarier

Greene would probably fetch a 6th or 7th, something miniscule. Its a shame Chicago and (soon to be) Montreal poached some talent from the KHL when we couldn't, considering Kempny and Shipachev play in positions where we're weak. Some solid low risk, high reward moves.

Forbort is already being surpassed by Gravel, so I've pretty much written him off already. Its ****ing frustrating seeing some of the guys that went after these picks, makes me wonder what the **** exactly are the scouts looking at and why they still have their jobs. Our picks have been absolute garbage for awhile now. The Teubert and Hickey picks still bother me.

From all indications, that's exactly what DL thought, too. He did a deep audit of the entire org, looking specifically at ground level amateur scouts.

you are probably right with his value..I think I would rather just keep him and hope he can either anchor the bottom pair, or clear waivers (saving $900K in cap) and be used as a call up in case of injury.

now that futa is AGM who is in charge of scouting? the guy Florida let go sure seems like he is held in high regard. Would be nice to snag him

You can look at hindsight into any draft year and say that the picks sucked for the most part. Heck short of Crosby and Price in 2005, who should have been picked ahead of Kopi? I would argue Price shouldn't have gone before him even. And you want to make a really extreme one how many players should have been picked ahead of Hornqvist in 2005? By the way he was the last pick in the draft.

Did we miss some better talent, sure. But so did every other team. Our draft record isn't that bad.

VP of Hockey Operations and Director of Player Personnel: Michael Futa

Vice President/Assistant General Manager: Rob Blake

right forgot about Blake and what title Futa was actually promoted to. Point still remains is there any room for the Florida guy?

Right, thanks. Was in a hurry and didn't look closely at the title of the promotion.

Congratulations to Jon Rosen and his wife on the birth of their daughter Raquel Simone this morning!

I did some numbers crunching today and assembled a roster that opens up about $16 million, which will be needed to sign a left wing to play on the first line with Kopitar, a third line center, and a top 4 defenseman.

The following lineup costs $58,973,729:

[Left Wing]-Kopitar-Gaborik
Pearson-Carter-Toffoli
Versteeg (assuming signed for $3 million)-[3C]-Andreoff
Mersch-Dowd-Brown-Nolan

McNabb[other Top 4] - Doughty
Martinez-Muzzin
Gravel-Fobert

Quick
Budaj

This assumes we can trade Greene, Clifford, Shore, and King for just picks, and send Scuderi to minors. This also accounts for Richards' penalty of $1,570,000.

If we resign Lucic at $6 million, we can sign Yandle at $6 million, which will leave us $4 million for a third line center. Also, these calculations are based on us not being able to move Brown. If we move his salary, with $2 million retained, we have close to another $4 million in cap space.

If we can get rid of dead weight like Greene, King, Clifford and sign Lucic and Yandle at 6 million and still have 4 million left over thats ****ing amazing !

Its a bit unfair to call these guys dead weight, they are role players that we have had a lot of success with in the past. None of them are on awful contracts.

I'd move one of our LWs (depending on the return)
It will be interesting to see if the guy that enjoys being hit by trucks and pucks can make a return, or if he ends up retiring.

Don't forget shedding the dead weight that is Scuderi, who will hopefully get traded or buried in Ontario. Still not a fan of re-signing Lucic, when that money could be used to fill some big holes in the top 4 D and 3C spots.

Just play Scuderi in the top 4, Sutter will anyways, and Shore as the 3C. Shore has really good Corsi.

Bam! Problem solved. :)

I know you're joking, but I'm legit sick of hearing how great our Corsi is (Forbort's corsi is better than Doughty's, big ****ing deal). Where the **** did that get us in the playoffs?
