Hey guys, I advise you all to watch the Penguins and see how they have brought in a number of call ups who have had a big impact on their success.

This is what the Kings should look at doing.

While you were at it I hoped everyone recognized how much of a disaster Yandle was in his own zone. He's a terrible fit and should never be considered on this team. Offensively gifted but offensively bad at playing D.

Have to disagree completely here. This is the first year Martinez has been anything but bottom pairing. He was adequate at the beginning of the season this year on second pair but degraded in the second half. I agree he is important to the Kings but that's more nostalgia and a puck mover shortage than impartial assessment. The fact he is our 3rd best D man is more about the poverty throughout the overall D corps than his league-wide value.

That's because of our previously great defensive depth.

I respectfully but completely disagree. I think you could go down 90% of the rosters in the league and Martinez would be a fantastic add at #4 for them. Agreed that he shouldn't be our #3, but I think he's getting sold short.

Mike "One championship a decade ago" Babcock. Not saying he's a bad coach, but overrated. Sutter did more here in 2.5 seasons than Babcock did in 10 years in Detroit. People (not you) should keep that **** in mind when they're wishing to be "like Detroit".

If anything, you're helping illustrate my point that coaching is as much about timing and fit/chemistry as it is about raw coaching ability. Murray established a foundation, but he couldn't push us over the hump like Sutter could. Eventually, Sutter will be stale, too; does that mean he sucks? No.

Martinez did a great job replacing of Voynov on the roster, the problem is the D didn't have the depth to replace Martinez.

I still really like this team. Just a few holes will have to be filled

Gabby - Kopitar - Mersch - speed, size and a young guy willing to go to net
Toffoli - Carter - Pearson - re-unite the 70's line
Brown - ??????? - King
Nolan - Andreoff - Clifford
Dowd

Doughty - Yandle
Muzzin - Martinez
McNabb - Gravel
Greene

Quick - Budaj

The above team is worth 70.6 mill if Yandle gets 6mil a year, Dowd .7 and McNabb 1.2 mil
leaves only .800 for a third line centre if cap stays at 71.4. If it goes to 73.4 as suspected it gives us 2.8 to play with.

Convince Vinnie to stay an extra year and give Philly a pick or player like Forbert as compensation if compensation is needed. Philly was so excited to get rid of Vinnie they may just eat the contract with smiles on their face.

Speaking of Philly what would it take to get Simmonds back? Say we sign Yandle and start the deal with Martinez +? just spitballing....the offseason came sooner than expected and I still am in shock

this is true, but pair him with a horse like Doughty and in a defensive structure like the Kings, it would clean him up a lot.

In the end I can see DL targeting Brian Campbell and Vern Fiddler and re-signing Schenn

The Flyers don't need puck moving defensemen. I think they have like 20 of them in their system.

Kinda like when he played King/Nolan/Voynov in the cup run of '12 and Pearson/Tofolli in '14?

Yeah, you're definitely right...

This is true but i believe its more that King and Nolan play Sutter style hockey which was what the NHL was few years ago the grind and dump n chase style so he liked their game . But nowadays its evolved to speed and skill and he seems to have an issue playing younsgters with skill or even Versteeg should have been on the 1st like over King but he doesnt play Sutter style hockey.

Gravel i dont seem to recall making to many mistakes. Muzzin makes many mistakes but yet its ignored. Its arrogance on many peoples parts.

Lucic will be gone, the UFA market is bare which means he won't be able to pass up the ensuing cash and prizes.

I think Vinny might want to go another year and if so, DL should work it out with him for a trade to a contender while getting something back.

Don't sign Lucic, Lewis, Versteeg or Schenn if Greene is expected back/can still play next year.

Shed as many of the following as possible (based on return):

Scuderi
McNabb
King
Brown
Shore
Clifford
Andreoff
Nolan

Force DS (if he want to stay) to play the younger guys coming up or in (via trades).

Consider even trading Carter and/or Gaborik if the return is high enough.

Inner core: Doughty, Kopitar, Quick.
Outer core: Carter, Toffoli, Muzzin, Gaborik, Martinez, Pearson.

The team is in a tough spot, expectations should be low for a while.

Carter goes nowhere. He is a stud. And in great shape. If Thornton can perform into his late 30s then Carter can too .

They need a dman like Trouba or Hamonic more so than a Yandle. Finding a right handed second pairing dman is imperative, as it'll reunite Muzzin with Doughty, who played together pretty much exclusively in 2014.

Then Martinez can get back to playing his natural left side with a right handed partner who is capable of logging 20+ minutes.

So long as the team has 4 dmen capable of playing over 20 minutes a piece, they'll be in much better shape if they plan on advancing further into the playoffs in 2017.

The only problem is Yandle is free if he chooses to sign here

Harmonic and Trouba cost assets we do not have. Add Brodin into the conversation as well. Would love any of the 3 but we have no assets to get them.

Forgot about Tyler Myers as well in Wpg. Massive RH shot that would fit perfect on the second pairing with Martinez. Again who would we give up? People seem to mention Pearson, but he is still cheap and productive, Martinez would still be needed, we are short on Centers, and we have no prospects other than Kempe that would make other teams even blink.

Other teams have thrown young defenseman into the top 4 and they have performed . Look at Anaheim , Chicago recently with TVR and many others. I think Gravel should have played and probably would have done a much bettwr job. Martinez should be traded for an upgrade or top 6 player.

I pray to god Brown is moved this year , either a buyout or trade with a sweetened deal.

Sweetened deal includes Toffoli and/or Kempe. Likely retained salary as well.

Most likely, however if someone is willing to give up a rich haul (to win now) you might do it anyway especially if re-tooling looks like it may take longer than expected.

I would wait and keep Brown 1 more year if we can't move him. Then the buyout may become a necessity. We can put out a good team next year even with Brown on the roster if DL is shrewd. It's the next year when Toffoli needs to be paid that a buyout can be talked about.

It gives us one more year to see where the cap goes as well as the slight chance he is picked up in expansion. We are not in as bad of shape cap wise as people think. The only bad contract we have is Brown and Richards hit costs way less next year.

My rant..

I am ok not resigning Lucic. For the $ it will likely take to resign him I think it would be better spent on the backend. He's an awesome player, but I expected WAY more physical play and intimidation out of him and I feel a little unsatisfied with what I saw out of him this season. (not even counting the playoffs) Let someone else overpay him

I may be in the minority, but I like what schenn brings as a 5-6 dman and I hope they resign him if reasonable.

Excited to see what Gravel and Forbort can do next season with the big club. Not sure how we are going to fit all these L handed shots in the lineup though.

Will be really interesting to see what/if anything, Dean can do with Dustin Brown. Can you really have your captain playing invisible on the 4th line for 7 minutes a game? Cap hit of $5.8 million until 2021-22....Anyone have contact info for Lance Armstrongs Doctor? I'm kidding, drugs are bad.

How come we havent heard anything new about Paul Ladue? Come on bro, sign already. We could really use some more Right Handed Dman in the system.

you know the system is an issue when Versteeg played great with Pearson and Kopi with his speed and tape to tape passes. Instead he didnt play Kings hockey and was stuck on the 4th and we had a useless plug like King on the 1st line. The love for King is mind boggling to me .

We dont have another top end center coming up in the pipeline that may be able to replace him. Prokhorkin should be given a try if our management can swallow their ego

This is true. Also the buyout would be less severe next year as well but my god for his caphit we could bring in 2 players who would make us that much more competitive .

lets see what controversial fun stuffs happen. watch jimmy vesey sign here and investigations or something.

The problem is that Sutter doesn't trust young defensemen enough to let them learn through mistakes. It always seemed like if you mess up, you're glued to the bench the rest of the game and a healthy scratch the next game.

Since last years Kings regular season flop I ranted on this boards about certain players and the questionable decisions by DL.
I decided not to do my usual rant, regarding the defense, forward depth or Lombardis recycle projects since those are well documented in recent trades and in the free agency and trade deadline threads.

Looking at this team, one thing is for certain, the base of the team is a solid playoff/Stanley Cup contender. Losing prime years of some of our young players for a rebuild/reset doesn't seem a fair option for the players or us fans... I wouldn't mind this organization to stick to the basic identity of the cup winning teams for the future. That said, this team needs a bit of spark, both on defense as well on the forward position.

As far as defense goes - this team bleeds for a puck moving defensman since we lost Voynov. I am a bit bitter that this year I see what I thought was our biggest need going into last years draft/free-agency. This time without the high draft pick, Jones or Colin Miller to play with...
Schenn, McNabb, Greene and Scuderi don't belong in the top4 defensive spot. It's unfair to them as well to put them in those spots and then see them fail...
I really hope Lombardi stays far away from guys like Girrardi and M.Staal. This team needs someone who can skate and pass there - a proper Voynov replacement...
I think that Versteeg has showed enaugh to get at least contract offer consideration (under $2.5mio), Lucic should only be signed for 2nd/3rd liners money - probably less then Gaborik. Also the team needs to make room in the bottom 6 and consider opening roster spot for younger and not so one-dimensional forwards.

The prospect pool is quite one dimensional, not a lot of top potential there with the trades etc.
This scouting staff found undrafted (or not signed) UFA prospects like Muzzin and Jones. It's time to get to work and boost the prospect pool with some NHL future quality prospects...
As far as coaching goes. At least looking at the pathetic PK should be a priority.
