The rules have yet to be locked in, but the latest rumor is that NMC must be protected but NTC don't. That being said, even if there are two teams, it is unlikely that Brown will be chosen. Why take him when you can take a better value young forward or a #4 defense man? Then use the money to sign UFAs.
Every team is going to leave exposed a "bad" contract. The expansion team(s) are under no pressure to take them.

I think the concern is less about not being able to expose Brown so an expansion team can take him and more about being unable to protect another forward because we have to protect Brown.

I agree with you that no expansion team will draft Brown. He has negative value. The expansion team will take one of our young players. Then they might ask "What will you give us to take Brown off your hands?"

The Kings are going into another draft without a 1st round pick and without a 3rd and all we have to show is missing the playoffs and knocked out in the 1st round.

I always liked Lombardi and he did what no other Kings GM in 40 plus years and he did it twice.

His strong points have always been drafting, big trades and signing players in certain deals to ones where they are a bit underpaid but usually then giving longer term. The problem is that term in the salary cap era is a commodity. Something happened when the Kings starting winning and he started giving out horrible deals and none of them have paid off.

Greene has been hurt for most of his extension, Gaborik has done nothing since 2014, Quick and Brown haven't been the players they were in 2012 or 2014, and so on.

Hell, not to dog on Kopitar but he makes 10 million now and Joe Pavelski made him and everyone else look bad and he makes much less.

Lombardi was smart this year not to deal draft picks for next year because he realizes he has no world beating prospects and the cupboard needs to be re filled. The problem, like others said above, is then he has no chips to play with so he ends up with guys like Versteeg, Schenn and Scuderi.

Now, he has forced himself to deal either his caption or a few pieces of his core since 2012 to keep some of the other core or sign players he traded more assets for.

So uhh.. who are some candidates for 3C?

Shore, Dowd, Helm, Cullen, ... Mike Richards? Stoll?

Gross.

I agree with this also.

Those drafts have cause some problems, with a stagnant cap too boot.

But, people had to expect the Kings would pay for dealing 1st/2nd rounders. That was going to happen.

The reward was Two Stanley Cups, and the golden age of Kings hockey. I am ok with the price Lombardi paid.

Absolutely agree. I gladly accept all the fallout from the moves required to win those Cups. It'll be interesting to see how Lombardi or the next GM tear it all down and rebuild.

Too many one dimensional players taking up not only roster spaces but ice time. There is little flexibility and it's hard for a member of the locker room to take to task another player when the captain does not earn 1/3 of his contract. Brown needs a Viking funeral while others need to the letter that they earned. Accountability

I was encouraged by Dowd. If he can force his way into that spot, it would do a lot for cap flexibility. He impressed me more than Shore. It would be great if some competition would help Shore develop into the player he can be.

Something is definitely going to be different this off-season. When someone as garrulous as Dean is quiet for this long, well to me it seems foreboding. No calling out guys, no thoughts on the series, nothing after 10 days. It's very out of character.

Maybe he's finally taking a step back and looking at the situation as a whole, with Sutter, the core, etc. Sometimes when you work so hard constantly you miss some of the big picture things right in front of you.

Kings really want to go for it all again in 2016-17, I'd call Toronto about Bozak. They might be willing to trade a center now that they're getting Matthews and have Nylander Kadri, and Bozak. And if they sign Stamkos that's another center. Not sure what the Kings can offer Toronto though for him.

Knowing Toronto fans they will want Kopitar at 50 percent retained and Toffoli.

Not at the price he'd likely command. He is not as good as people outside of Detroit think he is.

How much could he possibly command? His career high in points is 33. I wouldn't think more than 3 mil a year. And if that's too much how much do you expect to pay for a 3rd line center? None of the cheap young guys will cut it. Obviously cap space HAS to be moved around.

So at the moment our roster shapes up as follows

Lucic(UFA)-Kopitar-Gaborik(Tradebait)
Pearson-Carter-Toffoli
Brown(trade bait/buyout)-Shore/Dowd-Versteeg(UFA)
Clifford/King/Nolan/Andreoff/Lewis(UFA)/Mersch/Kempe

Doughty-Gravel????
Martinez-Muzzin
McNabb/Forbort/Greene/Scuderi/Schenn(UFA)

how do we improve on this???? our biggest weakness is obviously our defense and if we re-sign a guy like Lucic we're in it deep.....I think Gravel can step in next season but we need another defensive dman and honestly guys like the ones list on the 4th line need to traded to clear cap space and maybe Gabby gets moved as well....

King will never be on the forth line. He s loved way to much by sutter Versteeg is not going to push him down sorry

It's not just us, with a lot of the changing landscape (top teams going out, coaches getting fired), the uncertainty of an expansion draft, the cap concerns...there are a lot of moving parts this offseason and coming season. I wouldn't expect sweeping changes by any means, but it's gonna be a doozy of an offseason imo. I expect at least one crazy move from DL and a host of small tinkerings (signings, etc.).

And with so many moving parts around the league, imo, I trust DL to fix our most glaring issues and really leave his mark on the team again. This has been a man who has always had a plan, I doubt it goes out the window now.

Just out of morbid curiosity, what would a package for Matthews cost?

I would assume it starts with Toffoli, Kempe +

Not saying I am entertaining this, I am just wondering if we have what it takes to get in discussions.

Matthews value seems very high and I know he will step into the NHL next year and probably have Eichel success. Just see the Leafs are loaded at centre with Nylander, Marner, And Kadri so would they even entertain the notion?

If you are wondering what brought this up I was looking at our lineup with Carter on wing, which opens up a 2C and 3 C spot. With Carter getting older and signed long time I was wondering if moving him to wing would save a bit of wear and tear on him.

I'd think for any of the top picks the conversation starts with Muzzin and Toffoli and yeah plus plus plus.

Both are young, but proven, and experienced top options. Consider teams getting those top picks are young and/or fully rebuilding and they have zero need for older vets.

In other words, I don't think we have the assets to do something like that anyway without opening up other holes, and if you're going to start selling off parts to 'get younger,' might as well go rebuild, because look how hard it is and how long we've looked for top-sixers and top-four d-men. Maybe there's a deal to be made, but I sure don't see one that doesn't hurt us short term AND medium-term without scorching the earth.

Toffoli + Muzzin + 2017 first + more?

Versteeg is not coming back.

Lucic (UFA - likely coming back) - Kopitar - Gaborik
Pearson - Carter - Toffoli
King - Dowd/Shore - Brown
Clifford/Andreoff - Shore/Dowd - Nolan

Doughy - Scuderi
Muzzin - Martinez
Greene - McNabb
Forbort

That's how it going to shape up minus any trades based on contracts and one way deals.

Imagine the Kings without Doughty. That's what it would cost them. It's unrealistic to even think about it.

You mean you can't see the forest because the trees are in the way!!!

I don't think even Doughty straight up would get it done. Not because he's not good enough, but he's at $7m for the next 3 years, and then probably $10m after that. Matthews is cheap for the next 3 years, and then still pretty cheap after that. Toronto isn't going anywhere soon, so what's the rush.
