I know it's from the hockey news but would be wonderful news if it came true.
PITTSBURGH – Heading into another long offseason, the heat surrounding the Pittsburgh Penguins and their coaching staff has gotten hotter. Many want to see a complete overhaul of the group, including head coach Mike Sullivan.
Despite two straight playoff absences, it’s unlikely Sullivan will get handed walking papers any time soon. His assistants, however, are a different story.
Associate coach Todd Reirden and assistant Mike Vellucci will soon be free-agent coaches, assuming the Penguins do not extend them. Could they find their way to new teams this summer?
With the San Jose Sharks now in the market for a new head coach following the departure of David Quinn, the possibility of Todd Reirden stepping into this role seems to align perfectly with the team's requirements.
Sharks assistant coaches aren’t being moved, and they are believed to be looking for someone with
previous professional hockey experience. Reirden has brief experience as a head coach after leading the Washington Capitals for two seasons.
In both years, Reirden helped lead the Capitals as the top team in the Metropolitan Division.
According to Elliotte Friedman on
the 32 Thoughts Podcast, the Sharks might also be looking for someone with a sound mind for defense. Say what you will about the Penguins defense this year, but when Reirden is at his best, so too was their blue line.
Reirden is a defensive specialist who has built great relationships with some of the Penguins’ top defenders in recent memory. It was thanks to Reirden the Penguins got the best out of Cody Ceci in 2021. Or who has helped shape Marcus Pettersson into the defensive leader he is today.
Taking it back a few years in Reirden's first stint in Pittsburgh, Matt Niskanen earned Norris Trophy votes in 2014.
The Sharks are in the midst of a serious rebuild and might only be looking for something temporary while the rest of the team takes shape. This would fit Reirden, again, as he may have head coaching experience, but may be a perfect transition bench boss.
