Dubas said:

“In Murray’s case, he’s done this before. He’s won (the Stanley Cup). He did it twice. I know (Ottawa) moved on from him. The benefit for me is, I know him personally,” said Dubas. “I believe in him. He played for me (in junior). I agree with Jim Rutherford (former Penguins GM). When he has to prove himself and fight for the net, that’s when he’s been at his best.”

On Samsonov:

"What I’ve seen of him this summer is a very strong commitment to his craft,” said Dubas. “That’s impressed me. In terms of why the public should believe in him, well, I’ll say this: He believes in himself. "That’s why he took a one-year, bet-on-himself kind of deal. He could have taken more. He could have got more. He was insistent on the one-year and insistent he would prove himself in that year.”

According to the article, it sounds quite a bit like he wanted these 2 guys as targets. And he could have signed Campbell or Kuemper as the Leafs are spending nearly $6.5 million on their goalies. Only time will tell if it was the right move, but I am fairly confident saying that at least one of these goalies could provide at least a .900 sv% for more than half a season, because neither Campbell nor Mrazek could last season after Jan 1st.

Half the teams aren’t contenders though.

Beyond Vasi and Shesterkin you got 4-5 decent guys and thats it. And half contender teams .

I bolded the ones that are in same situation than us or worse goalie wise.

Colorado and if you count Edmonton and Toronto as contenders are the teams with “unknown” in net.
The other contenders at least know what they have.

Yeah I'd say there are 15 contenders that know what they have in net - anywhere from ok to solid.

Leafs, Oilers, Knights, and Avs are gambling.
Knights?

More than half the teams in the league have a gamble in net.
realistically there's like 7-9 goalie situations league-wide that aren't a dice-roll. Just glad ours is only a 2 and one year gamble and not a five year plus pot committed... committment.

carolina, florida, LA, St. Louis, Boston, Minny all have goaltending situations that realistically could go either way and no one would/should bat an eye about it.

If Minny gets above average goaltending in the regular season and good goaltending in the playoffs it’ll be because the backup stole the number 1 job.

I wouldn't be concerned at all with a Canes or Bruins tandem. For Canes starter was out for the entire playoffs and they almost hit the ECF. Raanta is solid.

Florida, Minny, and STL know what they have. Sufficient to hit playoffs and it could work. Minny is borderline.

I dont think LA has cup aspirations, they're working through the process. Success is a bonus.

Shouldn’t the goal and hope be not to be in the same situation? Hardly cause for celebration.

At least people are finally admitting that it’s a gamble as many have stated all summer. Wonder what took them so long?

It took this long because it started with only Toronto having a gamble and then that got chipped away to with the exceptions of Vasi and Shesterkin and 4 or 5 decent guys everyone else is taking a gamble. I think it will lead to -since there are no gaurentees, every team is taking a gamble in net. It is just the odds that are different.

Just an observation about lack of talent in the league itself. Harder to rectify it when you only have so little to choose from.

There are literally 2 or 3 goalies in the league that don't have some question marks. Once people can grasp that most basic of concepts, statements like this shouldn't occur

Agreed it’s not an easy job. With a big job comes big expectations, you don’t get a pass IMO, because something is hard.

Yes 90% of goalies today are gambles based on if they will work in the teams system or not, but our gamble also has an additional ? attached to it due to health risk. Does not matter if you make case why murray will stay healthy its just fact he has a ? for full season health. Its a little annoying they would double up on the ?'s given goalie situation last season. But they offset that a little by signing Samsonov as well so hoping he breaks out and becomes long term no.1

In all fairness, many goalies have additional health risks involved. Look at Campbell, Kuemper, Lehner, Andersen, Varlamov, etc.....all have had significant injury issues in the recent past.
