Staple says in today's Newsday that Snow will wait until close to the 3 pm deadline on March 5th to trade Vanek and MacDonald. That scares the **** out of me. That means everyone NOT named Vanek and MacDonald will get traded, and the 6 teams looking at Vanek and the 7 teams looking at MacDonald will have already traded for similar players. Man I know Snow is gonna **** this up. Well, there's many reasons why this franchise is the laughing stock of the NHL, Snow is just one of them.

http://www.newsday.com/sports/hocke...alk-heating-up-with-vanek-macdonald-1.7214079

I don't think it means anything at this point; it could all be misdirection. If Garth gets someone to pay what he wants before the deadline I'm sure he bites. As someone said before GM's are the biggest liars, much of what is leaked is probably bullspit. AMAC is worth what the market will pay at the time if its a 1st then all the better, if its a 2nd and a 5th than that's what it is. The question is will someone be desperate enough to overpay, and whether waiting will contribute to a sellers market. A small frenzy would be a good thing from the Isles point of view. Where's there a Milbury when you need him.

Amac sucks, other teams are aware of how awful he has been. Only thing he has going for him is his cap hit.

Saw this on LHH, not sure about the credibility yet an interesting idea.

Hearing Vanek could be heading to Vancouver for Edler, 1 for 1 swap.

When I say “hearing”, it’s not something I read on Twitter. I was told from a friend who is very tight with management. Now, let me ask you friends, how do you feel about this 1 for 1 swap. Your giving a rental away for a player with term (2018) and a 5 mill cap hit. Your getting a guarenteed top 4 defensemen while giving up one in MacDonald, which will provide another asset in return. Listening to Dom’s interview on that podcast, he’s 100% right when he says or asks rather, how many times we are going to support Garth Snow? Yes, he doesn’t have the budget most teams do, but he has been successful in trading for a few big names. Viznovsky, Smyth, Vanek. Maybe trading for a players with term is where he’s at, at this point in his GM career. He’s going to rebuild the rebuild by now trading for names with term the way LA did with Carter/Richards. Goaltending however will be different. Lot’s of FA’s out there this summer. I expect him to overpay for one so no one can say he didn’t address that position again. I have to say, if Isles can bring back Edler for Vanek, with maybe a mid round pick involved (3rd/4th), I might bite.

I'd be on board with a Vanek for Edler swap. Not sure why Vancouver would do it, but I like the idea. We can then draft Reinhart/Bennett with our top pick.

They have Hamhuis, garrison, Bieksa, Tanev. They'll get by.

I do that trade in aheartbeat but I don't think VAN would. Plus Edler would have to agree to waive his NTC.

Plus VAN could probably to better then a rental like Vanek for Edler.
Because he's a legit top 4 and signed long term to a good contract he can get a few good assets as far as prospects go or a young foward.

Now if the trade went down, I'd be happy. Edler has apparently been struggling but I still think he's a number four with a chance to rebound. He's signed on at a good rate too.

While his past is intriguing...Edlers +/- is a concern. Also his dip in offensive production the last few seasons as he entered his prime is also a concern. Ninnimaa 2.0 ? I'd do the trade if it's Vanek and Amac for Edler and a 1st and maybe a 3rd/4th.

Speaking of Mr. Ninnimaa, he just retired 2-3 weeks ago. Was playing in Swe-1 last season.

So that translates to Moulson, 1st and 2nd for Edler? meh

but if its the best we can do to salvage it so be it.

Can't say I like it though. I don't think Edler is much of a difference maker.

Agree, that's my concern. Reeks of Janne 2.0

Would rather find something else

I'm not sure why Vancouver would trade Edler for a UFA if they claim they're rebuilding.

Not much out there. Edler would give us a boost considering our kiddie corps blue line and also another vet when Visnovsky's contract is up after next season. Edler is not the Edler of year's past, but he's definitely an upgrade right now for us. We also do have a need for his salary on the books since we're so far below the cap with very few roster spots available.

I don't know the plausibility of that trade, but I'd do it in a heartbeat. Edler would basically be insurance and buys time for Reinhart and the boys to get more development so they have a more seamless transition to the NHL when they do make it. CdH-Hamonic would be the lead pair and play the toughest minutes, shelter Edler-Visnovsky with heavy offensive zone starts and pair them with JT's line. Hickey/Strait/Reinhart could be our 3rd pairing. When Visnovsky moves on, Reinhart slots right in with whoever emerges from the AHL dogfight as his successor for the 3rd pairing role for 2015.

Getting Edler would alleviate a lot of pressure in the offseason. With Edler in tow, acquire Ward for futures, re-sign Nabby as a backup, and draft whoever with our top pick. Done for the offseason and Garth can go about his normal way in UFA where he signs a 2nd/3rd tier stop gap for depth.

CdH-Hamonic
Edler-Visnovsky (Edler would be on his preferred LD spot and Vis is more comfortable in the RD slot)
Reinhart-Hickey/Strait
Carkner (?), Donovan

With a Ward or UFA goalie, that's a big improvement in both those phases. Wang is happy since we are a cap floor team for next season and Snow filled in the cracks in the lineup and goes ahead with a mostly homegrown team. Continued development of our young guys... we're a much improved team next season.

Finally I agree with you. I despised Janne!

How can anyone despise this man:

Edler has had a bad year, but i think a change of scenery would do him a world of good.

Yes we will see how it turns out, that's for sure. Scouts look at how successful the player is at the levels he's played and a plethora of stats and other indicators too numerous to list here. True, past preformance is not an indicator of future success, but Strome has been successful at every level he's played, just like Nelson. When I say you haven't seen anything yet, I'm speaking about at this level. Now I didn't mean you're not entitled to your own opinion, far from it, just that the sample of games at this level is too small to really make a determination logically where the kid will wind up. I remember on these boards and on mania up to last year's playoffs fan's being fed up with Kyle Okposo and the numerous trade scenarios they listed to rid ourselves of his services. I said this before and I will say it again when you rebuild with just the kids you draft, you never know how long it's going to take for them to mature if ever.

Right, yeah i'm making the call more on instinct (and labeled that warning), not really on logic. Of course there was a lot of logic to think other guys would be successful (i.e. Tamellini, Schremp et al.). Just an instinct call on my part...

Edler for Vanek straight up?

I'll believe it when I see it because I don't even think that would happen in my dreams.

Whatever, when we get in a conversation comparing Strome's upside with Tambellini's, and Schremp's, I'll just let it go as it's not worth your time or mine; you win.

I haven't seen much of Edler this year, but based on Vancouver fans' opinions that would be akin to moving Vanek for AMac. How is that a good idea? When I get bored here and head into the red light district (main board - trade thread) all I see about Edler is complaint after trade proposal after complaint. Some of them would give him away for crackers and cheese.

No thank you. I want a goaltender and a pick back, not someone else's blueline disaster.
