The genius move would be to sell Provorov for a bunch (Oilers 2026 1st, Beau Akey, Oilers 2027 3rd) and replace him with Alec Martinez (CBJ 2026 3rd, St. Louis 2025 4th). I don’t expect that to happen.

But I expect very little today. And I am fine with that.

Why does room chemistry matter so much if the guys in the room aren’t good enough to make the playoffs?

Prospects don’t win games and become a factor for at least half a decade in some cases.
Hence why you need to keep it overflowing you never know when guys are going to bust or breakout. If you have too many, it allows for flexibility to either move guys on the roster or make moves to get another top guy. As our current core starts to get into its prime(and becomes more expensive), having young guys that can produce will be essential to being able to compete long term.

The literal best case scenario for this team, active deadline or not, would be to make the playoffs and get shelled by Florida/Washington. Why would you throw major assets at that?

Assume it won’t happen, but you have to wonder if Don thinks about moving Provorov after we got dominated by the Florida teams and seeing the selling prices.

You act like the team is in a 2019 CBJ situation. They are in year 1 of a project, a project that got majorly changed after that happened in the offseason. They are allowed to build chemistry with this core and possibly sacrifice the chance at a playoff birth in year 1

If ~$12m in a non-income state isn't enough...boy, I don't know where he thinks he's going to get that AAV.

Panarin signed for 13.2% of the cap at the time in NY. When Pastrnak signed his extension, the AAV was for 12.8% of the cap.

Next year, the cap is expected to be around $95.5m. 13% of that is $12.4m. Of course, things like NMCs/NTCs move that number a bit on the margins.

So of course, somehow Vegas will swoop in last minute lol

Caught in no-man's land. Not really good enough to justify a big add or two. Not bad enough to sell 3-5 pending UFAs and get worse for the final month or so.

As of now, it seems like a seller's market 🤷‍♂️

I think the literal best case scenario is Toronto wins the Atlantic, we face Toronto in the first round and steal game 1, and then Toronto can’t handle the pressure and we beat them in a 7 game series. (The HF Leafs board loses their minds but somehow the team runs the same main guys back next year.) Then we get shelled by Florida/Tampa Bay. Yours is the 2nd best case scenario and definitely more likely.

Summer dreams are dead

The dream was thinking Rantanen would consider signing here. He clearly had very little interest in Carolina. This almost feels like a Panarin type situation where he had a very small list of places he'd consider. He's won a cup and is worried about the bag. I don't think he would have had any motivation to succeed here at all.

Barry Trotz is rapidly becoming a strong contender for "worst GM ever of a team I cheer for". Certainly the worst within the last ten or fifteen years.

So the Hurricanes will have turned Marty Necas, Jack Drury, a 2nd, and a 4th, into Taylor Hall, Logan Stankoven, and two 1sts, plus maybe an ancillary piece.

Tulsky'd lmao

Carolina is totally failing at the trade deadline right now at this point and Jack Hughes is out for the year.

Sort of bodes well for the CBJ if we can rebound to playing decent hockey and stay healthy.
