Foley has never been concerned about opening his checkbook. I highly doubt that will be a consideration when deciding the future of either the front office or the coaching staff.

Like I have said all along it's going to come down to the question of "who is a better coach that is available?". With the recent report of teams interested in Quenneville, that's certainly one, off ice issues aside. Trotz and Boudreau are 2 others that might be let go in the near future. Although Trotz runs a similar system to PDB so I'm not really sure what that would solve.
Many coaches would be better because we wouldn't be banging our heads against the wall after yet another loss where we outshot the opponent 40-20 and still lost 2-1 or 3-2 after the PP goes 0-5 thanks to PDBs great fing system. It's a situation of when you are in a hole, stop digging.

As an exercise I tried to see how little help we would need to get under the cap.

The answer was a Pacioretty trade is all the "help" we would need. Even signing Smith to 5 million.

If we trade Pacioretty for Max Jones, buyout Dadonov and waive Brossoit and Patrick that should be enough.
(I know it makes more sense to trade Patrick and Brossoit, even half retained but this was how little we need from other teams.)

That would allow us a 22 man roster, with Smith at 5, Roy at 2.5, Hague at 1.75, Kolesar at 1.2 and Howden at 1. And we'd have around 271k for any bonus overages or as extra cap space.

The next season Dadonov buyout would go up by 1.5 million but the cap probably goes up 1 million and we would not have 1.275 million in buried penalty. So we would have 775k more to work with that season and no significant players to re-sign unless they sign an RFA for only a year. Likely only Morozov would need a new contract but they could make trades at that time to move money around if they wanted more changes.

I personally wouldn't look at moving Karlsson until the TDL, I'd give him a shot under a new coach, plus I like what he gives defensively, but and it has been an off year for many, we need more from him offensively.
I was surprised Peter DeBoer wasn’t fired the morning after the final regular season game. Foley terminated Gerald Gallant and replaced him with a worse head coach, imo.

Twasn't Foley, but McCrimmon who made that coaching change.

And McCrimmon gets vote of confidence from Foley and will return.

(It may be that some teams will wait to see what Boudreau's future is with Vancouver before deciding they may need to make a change with their guy.)

What this tells me is Foley is interfering in hockey ops so much there is no point getting rid of his puppet.

Getting very involved.

Foley announces he will be (more) hands on this off season. Blames Ottawa for misleading about trade list (and didn't like the trade but went along with it).

Well that ain’t good. The Dadonov trade was baffling.

Well, if he had stopped the Dadonov trade then that would have been a good thing.

Will be interesting. I feel like Kelly does need some looking over the shoulder. Also, imagine him sitting in on a call going "so is that a yes or is that a no?" while Kelly goes "Bill, please let me do this myself, I'm a grown up man!"

I think Trotz would either be awful here, a PDB type, or else he might be a raging success, sort of the Islanders defense with players in VGK that can actually score.

At absolute worst it'd be PDB with a PP that can score.

If I have it all correct.... As of today, VGK have 37 under contract (5G, 14D, 18F; 1D and 1F slideable) and HSK two AHL SPCs.

RFAs: Ferguson; Hague, Pachal; Dugan, Howden, Jones, Kolesar, Leschyshyn, Miromanov, Rondberg, Roy
UFAs: Bischoff, McCoshen (AHL); Janmark, Smith, Quinney, Duke (AHL), Loewen (AHL), Quine (AHL), Thomson (AHL).

Kolesar and Roy have arbitration rights. Rondberg is a group 1 RFA (not enough experience for RFA group 2); which means in part he can't be offer sheeted. Quinney is UFA group 6.

(I've including the AHL free agents too)

Dugan is the ONLY RFA with waiver exemption still available. (The rest would have to clear waivers to be assigned to HSK.)

Unsigned draftees: Campoli needs to be signed by 8/15. Vikman may be the Ferguson replacement in depth chart.
