Official New Year Training Camp thread

I imagine we will. After listening to Keefe’s presser, they don’t seem that odd. It’s just a change of deployment of what we saw under Babcock, that Keefe deployed after he took over.

I forget who mentioned it in the off-season or COVID shutdown, might have been CJ, but they said that Keefe wanted a more defensive third line, hence what we see now. The fourth line can do a bit of everything.

What we’re seeing is Keefe making the team “his” versus when he took over without a camp last year and we were in a spot where we had to focus on getting wins quickly to get back into a playoff spot, rather than overhauling everything.

Coaching is a fluid thing, so who knows, maybe by game 5 we’ll see Hyman and Thornton switched, but there’s actual logic from Keefe with these and I doubt two small scrimmages is going to change the lineup for Game 1.
Keefe has a knack for trying stuff. Refreshing stuff

Who knows, maybe Thornton with Matthews and Marner will be nasty. I mean when he signed, I assumed he'd get spot duty as a LW with either Matthews or Tavares. If it's not working, then they will change it up lol not sure why some people are getting so freaked out.

One underrated point if Vesey and Thornton can work out playing top 6 LW, is that they are very cheap players who have potential to seriously outplay their contracts if they fit in well playing third wheel to our best players. Which allows us to slide good players like Hyman and Mikheyev down and improve the overall depth through lines 1-3.

I want pics of our new players in Leaf jerseys. Jeezus these guys in the media need to get stuff out for some esthetics. Thornton Simmonds,Vesey,Brodie etc need to line up and give us a photo off their own phone or something

That 7th D will be an interesting situation whenever the team has a healthy blueline (and obviously isn't playing all seven). Can understand pairing the new adds in Lehtonen and Bogosian together right now.

I wouldn't look to much into these these lines yet. Only one day but it is interesting to.see Lehtonen with Bogosian.

D pairings make sense for early camp. They need to see how Lehtonen looks but want to give him a comfortable spot with a vet rather than throw him into the deep end. At the same time they need to see how Dermott looks on the right, and playing him with Sandin also tests his ability to be the more mature, responsible partner.

Thornton is big, but he’s not a “get in on the forecheck first” kind of guy, he just doesn’t have the speed. I guess that’s why you try things in camp. My guess is Hyman ends up back in the top 6 eventually.

I absolutely love playing the same team 3 straight times ... The goal is kinda like baseball where you're trying to win 2/3.
Also cheap shots aren't as likely as you have to play the same guys the next game and can't get away with that crap
Yes it’s kind of like a bunch of mini-series. There will lots of good natured hatred built up. Love it.

who is the "get in on the forecheck" guy on Tampa's top line?

Tough to leave out Dermott to start but Lehtonen might just be that good, especially on the 2nd PP unit, to make it an easy call.

Still, even if Lehtonen is that good, that leaves both Holl and Bogo on clear notice that they'll have to play damn well to keep their spots over Dermott.

Anderson might be a nice piece at some point but if we're going to be regularly scratching Dermott, it would have been nice to go through with that Weegar for Dermott + Johnsson trade.

Weegar in Holl's spot would be something.

Yeah I'm not loving Thornton on the top line with Matthews and Marner. Thornton and Marner are both passers which may bode well for Matthews but we need someone to get in and create turnovers too.
