What about Erik Cole ?

I was scanning the free agent list and trying to target some LW players that might fit into our system and DL's philosphy, and i zeroed in on Erik Cole.

He's a big bodied power forward with great speed, he plays hard, he has been to two cup finals and is having another strong playoffs this year playing on Staal's wing. Plus he already has chemistry with Justin Williams. I realize het had a bit of a down year this year in Edmonton, but when he was traded back to carolina he was just shy of being a PPG player. I can see him on a line with Stoll and Brownie, driving the net like mad men. Plus, most importantly, he seems to be a DL guy, a winner with drive and passion.

On another note....after watching the Blackhawks on this playoff run i keep imagining the Kings being in a similar position next year. I also feel that Brian Boyle could become our Dustin Byfuglien, the big body that becomes a menace in the crease and can bang in some greasy rebounds. Plus like Boyle, Byfuglien seems to be a bit of gentle giant, but he has still been very effective for chicago. He sure rattled Loungo and go the canucks off there game.

What are your guys thoughts on these two scenarios ?

I love Erik Cole as a player, but there are several red flags that would preclude me from offering him a multiyear deal.

- He turns 31 in November. Guys with his style of play don't usually have the greatest longevity.

- Production without Staal as his center. Couldn't seem to find his stride in Edmonton (heard blips about them using him primarily at LW). Had a big point streak upon returning to Carolina. However, during the NJ series, he got demoted to Matt Cullen's line. In total, he's got 0 goals and 2 assists in 13 playoff games.

I'd love Luongo, but it would take waaaay to much to get him. The only way Van lets him go is if the Sedins leave, and can't sign any other FA's and decide to go full rebuild.

Do not want Artyukhin. I hope we have a chance to put him through the boards next season.

Develop our own goaltender. See how next season goes. Our depth chart is well stocked. Stick with Quick, Bernier, and Ersberg for now.

I think Eric Cole will re-sign with Carolina in the offseason.

I think it is guaranteed.

Moved threads: Having three separate off-season trade/FA signing threads for three different UFA's/players will only encourage more individual threads. Try and keep off-season signing/trade suggestions under one off-season discussion.

It is all a conspiracy to build my own thread muahahahah!

... no but seriously :P I don't want to wake up and have to post seven different yes or no's to seven different players in seven different threads. It is redundant :) There are so many free agents and trade proposals out there this off-season, might as well have them in a single trade/FA thread instead of cluttering the board. Not as if there is much else to talk about... but still. :P

The #1 maneuver I hope the Kings to take this off-season has nothing to do with UFA's or trades. I think it is imperative to sign Frolov to an extension. He is our franchise winger with irreplaceable abilities... He is a consistent player and one of the strongest in the league with the puck. It would be disastrous to let him go for scraps.

Re-Sign Fro!!! Do it Deano!

I agree, but .. He is a great player. Could give new life to the 4th line.

Imagine .. Brian Boyle and Artyukhin on 4th Line ..

Would considerably increase the power of production this line .. that was a flop this season.

Artyukhin took 43 minor penalties last year. For a comparison, Ivanans took 35, and had twice as many majors. No thanks.

I agree with everything that you said except this.

I dunno, I don't think he is very consistent game to game, but year to year I think he is always one of our top offensive performers despite the performance of the team. Since his rookie season he has always been a 50 point performer and then some, and with two of his last three seasons being 30 goal plus campaigns. He may not be consistent to his potential, but as for being an offensive performer for us I think he fits the bill.

Thirty goal scorers on the left wing are a rare commodity. The Kings are already short talent on the left side and have one of the top fifteen talents in the NHL already playing for them. They would be fools not to sign him. Frolov will be a King for the next several years and we will all be glad for it. What I think is the more interesting conversation is "Whom will be brought in to play left wing?" I have made the argument for Huselius in another thread and this thread has brought up LaRose. THIS is the question that I think needs asking for this offseason and I am quite curious as to what others think.

What do you guys think of this

extending Alexander Frolov:

Year 1 - 5.0
Year 2 - 6.0
Year 3 - 6.0
Year 4 - 5.5
Year 5 - 5.0
Year 6 - 4.0

= 5.25 cap hit

Kopitar's monster contract is ridiculous (6.8), he needs to step it up big time, and Frolov deserves to play with better linemates throughout an entire season. *hint hint*

Any thoughts?

I would be all for it. I would even be willing to give him more into the higher 5's... I don't care as long as he is signed long term and isn't scheduled to be signed and moved like Sully. Sure the deal you can't pass up comes every now and then, but use other assets. Retain Frolov.

If Vancouver loses the Sedins they will need Luongo to make the floor.

It would also take waaaaaaaaaaaay too much to keep him. I would not be suprised to see Canucks trade him to Montreal for a package including Carey price if Gillis has problems signing him to an extension this summer.

Sexy's random thoughts; May 09 version

1. JJ stays a King
2. Frolov stays a King
3. No Gaborik or Hossa
4. DL will confound everyone by:
a) drafting a d-man in the 1st round, and
b) signing a defensive-forward like Madden or Malhotra
5. Bernier to the Avs
