Official Francesco Aquilini Thread

Gillis will be the enemy of every president and GM of the league who has hated him for years.

They won’t admit it publicly but they know.
Curious how they elected him GM of the year in 2011.

NHL general managers and a panel of League executives, print and broadcast media vote for the Jim Gregory General Manager of the Year Award at the conclusion of the Second Round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs

What if you're Gillis and Aquilini offered you a 6 year contract for $$$ and promised full autonomy and open checkbook to be the team's President of Hockey Ops? Obviously given the previous working relationship you don't quite believe in his promises but there's not a whole lot to lose with a 6 year contract for $$$. Sure there's the PA role but you don't quite get the same opportunity to apply your sports science knowledge. Plus you have interviewed a couple of times for the job and got bypassed. You're now almost 63 years old. In comparison, Brian Burke has been around for a long time but he's only 3 1/2 years older.
Not a single hockey executive would turn down the role of President of the Canucks with full autonomy. Say what you will of the train wreck here but take away meddling owner and this is still a plum position in league. Great city, fans, cap team and a lot of very good pieces to work with. Now if the meddling owner would just step back and replace Benning.

Consolation prize for losing the Finals, just like us winning the Presidents Trophy instead of the Cup.

Somewhere, Aquilini watched that press conference and thought “THAT’S what I needed to hear!”

I simply think Aquilini doesn't care about the franchise as an asset at this point. Why? Well..

Of the 3 brothers, Roberto is the one with the brains and business sense, but I think Luigi wants him running the most important parts of the family business. Francesco is given the hockey team to play with.

It is also the culture that the oldest son maintains a certain position. Until Luigi passes. Then I predict you are going to see a full out battle between the brothers for control.

I'm not sure Frankie is even qualified to run a brothel. As least Michael's brother had some skill in that.

Can't wait honestly, hope so much dirt flinging that the league has to force a sale because some of the dirt thrown out is damage to the league.

This entire scenario is really the inevitable result of an owner who knows bumpkiss about building an NHL hockey team, but refuses to turn the franchise over to somebody who does.

So mediocre season gets piled on mediocre season......and the only thing that changes is the message (excuses). But this off-season takes the cake.

Acquilini finally went on the air on Sportsnet 650 to take puff-ball questions from the hosts. And basically offered up a host of lame excuses for last season's disaster. Re-listening to that interview in the light of the first 17 games this year, is enough to cause you to either cry or laugh hysterically, depending on your point of view these days.

To quote Clint in Dirty Harry, "Every man has to know his limitations". But that won't ever happen with this owner. So get used to it. For Canuck fans it's either 'endure the pain' or just 'check out'.
Well that is an opinion, and opinions are like A***holes, everyone has one. That said what proof do you have that they know nothing about hockey?
IT WAS THEM once they bought the team that guided the team to being the best in the league, multiple playoff appearances and a cup final, in less time that Benning has been on the job.
So, one GM has a winning record, signed fewer clause contracts, didn't have to buyout anybody, didn't have to trade away 1rst or 2nd rnd picks to ice a disaster.
Gillis average drafting at #23 and had 6 drafts, Benning has averaged drafting at #9, 6-23-5-5-7-10 Gillis had 10-22-29-26-24, he traded for #9.
Look at the entire NHL draft and see how many home runs happen at #23 and then compare that to Benning's #9. Jimmy should have 5 star players drafted in the first round at least

How much do you happen to know about building a hockey team, seriously I'm curious.

I found a new nickname for Aquilini in an old Beatles tune...."The fool on the hill."

Holy shit.

We got the dumb one that got scared by the smart employee he lucked out in hiring so he fired him and then hired a dummy, a con man and a Canuck legend to rebuild the team that he had staled out and instead of rebuilding it, he hammered us into the shitter.

Bravo Franky Beans.

Probably trying to figure out whats wrong with the team like everyone else. Or if I was looking for a controversy filled discussion i would say its about their trade requests:naughty: I know which one HF will run with
