The past 24 hours have reinforced why hockey is slowly becoming a joke.

That Brendan Shanahan video was laughable. "The head *WASN'T* the principle point of contact, but was targeted." If I didn't know any better, I'd say our justice god is trying to massage the rules so they fit what he wants.

Plus, the fact that the cleared puck hit Carter's stick aside, why is that a 2 minute penalty? It's playoff hockey so that already means rules don't apply I know but seriously come on.

You wanna hook a guy? Sure go ahead. Spear? Yeah, that's fine. Crosscheck to the face? That's playoffs baby. Sucker punch? That's also fine. Accidently flip the puck over the glass when already on the PK? Now hold on a sec son. You sit your ass down for two.

I find it amusing that you can break someone's skull with your stick and as long as you don't draw blood, it's the same severity as clearing the puck wrong.

Honestly, I'd like hockey to develop penalties somewhat akin to what the NFL does. ie different lengths for different severities. Jumping off sides or a false start is only 5 yards cause it's minimal, whereas taking out someone's knees or horse collar's are 15 and an automatic 1st & 10, cause you can really hurt a guy. In hockey drawing blood should be 4, regular penalties can stay 2 but something like delay of game should only be maybe 45 seconds or a minute.

Sorry, but blaming the refs is a copout.

The refs didn't force Vlasic to clear the puck out of play, nor did they force San Jose to stop playing defense when the score was tied 3-3.

Simple solution is to make stick fouls "two minute majors". That has been suggested for years if not decades.

That would be the worst thing to happen to the Hurricanes since yesterday.

I honestly don't understand why people have such a problem with the puck over glass penalty. All a player is trying to do in that situation 9 times out of 10 is bank the puck off the glass to clear the zone with no intention of finding a teammate. If people are so dead set against it being a penalty at least make if like icing (no line change allowed)

When a guy bats it in the air out of play? That's shouldn't be a penalty.

good post!!!!!!!!. regarding penalties, a rule is a rule regardless if an infraction is committed during the playoffs, in the last minute of a game, in ot and so on imo. without getting into how aweful officiating is, often the players don't know what to expect from ref to ref or game to game. 'should' be consistent across the board.

another thing i would like to see is that each team gets one review of a call per game. with the cameras and tech. that exists today, it wouldn't take alot of time and often missed calls, even off-sides, make or break a game.

Reviewing things like icing, off-sides, puck over glass, etc. I have no problem with. But that said, I think things have the potential to get taken too far with regards to calls when it goes beyond that. Especially when it comes to safety calls where I err on the side of caution by a significant margin. I'd rather the refs call an embellished high stick then completely whiff of a blatant one. A better way of managing things would be to have open reviews of the officiating by a non-affiliated group that gives direct input to the league much like the Sharks board (run by neutral posters) playoff officiating review threads from a few seasons back. If I could find a thread right now I'd link you to it, it was some fantastic stuff. But basically such a thing in place league wide, reviewing EVERY game, grading the refs on every outing, with the possibility of fines/suspensions for referees that consistently miss safety calls throughout the games they officiate during the season.

Also I'm not sure what if any kind of developmental system is in place for refs right now and if there's not one that's a VERY bad thing IMO.

Watching Sens-Pens game 3 right now....and that logo for Casino Lac-Leany on the Scotiabank ice looks like a large blood splatter. It's really....distracting.

That's because after they take your money, you kill yourself...hence the large blood spatter. It's impossible to win there. I've tried many times :(

Offensively, he's been good, but his defense has suffered because of it. Even in the Toronto series, his skating got him into trouble more than once.

The Bruins in general really screwed up the Leafs series by letting it be more run and gun than it should have been. It's a style that hinders their best player and plays right into the Leafs hands. It was really a bizarre thing to watch. If they advance and let Pittsburgh do the same, they are getting swept.

Wow, the Blackhawks are trying to goon it up but they don't know that (as pointed out on the main board) they're too soft to pull it off. The Wings are way too smart to get sucked in.

The Bruins 4th line won the game for the Bruins with 2 goals in the third period. Really?

So who does everybody have between the Kings and Sharks?

I went with Blackhawks, Sharks, Bruins, Penguins this round.

I have Bruins, Pens, and Blackhawks (the only one I'm worried about right now). Pretty sure I thought the Kings in this one, but I wouldn't mind seeing the Sharks win.
