Whenever you have the opportunity to sell low and spend twice as much money to fill a marginal backup position with players off the street, you have to do it.

Marginal backup position? This Bears LB group isn't that great

Shea is one injury away from starting ,, I would saying replacing him with an NFL caliber talent even an average one would be major upgrade for Bears

He's one injury away from maybe playing 33% of snaps, pretty much exclusively on running downs.

I don't know if it's just me but I'm going to wait more than one half of preseason football before declaring the season over.

33% of running plays means the opposing offense is going to have big day on ground

That's really bad if you are cutting your first round pick only 2 years later...when it had nothing to do with injuries.

We got rid of Stan Thomas after two years. He fit the bill of 'really bad'.

Emery should have been fired, tarred, and feathered after that.

How he can even show his face in Chicago is amazing

If he's bad at football anyway, there's nothing to be gained by keeping him around...
Cap space to sign FA when guys get hurt during the year

This is all moot anyway. BWC can beat the dead horse all year about how Shea is the worst pick of all time, he's not going anywhere this year.

Unlike hockey's, I am not well versed in the NFL cap. So how does that work? There's an additional hit if they cut him or something?

Yeah because he still has about $2M in signing bonus money and $2M in guaranteed base salaries for this year and next year are guaranteed. Thus it's about $4.1M in dead money if they cut him. So there's three options

Cut him now, put $4.1M in dead money on the books for this year, and sign someone who most likely also sucks to take his spot.

Cut him as post June 1st cut, put $2.25M in dead money on books, " ", and have $1.8M in dead money next year.

Or keep him for this year at $2.2M and see if he can salvage any value at LB. But of course he sucked in the first half against Philly and the book is closed.

Most likely they will cut him after this year and save 800k for next year, but it wouldn't be HF Hawks without hysterics over a backup LB.

Well, it all being guaranteed money explains everything

easy to say that they won't cut Shea. Why should they? the guy he would replace him wouldn't be better while taking on dead cap space

What's the point of cutting him as of right now? Is a guy they pluck off the street really going to be any better?

I think it depends on the guys at camp. If one of the other LB's outplay him, I think Shea will be cut. I don't see them replacing him outside the current roster though. It's too early to judge now.

I hated that pick the second it was made. They went for a "heart and soul" player, but that doesn't work unless the guy has unbelievable vision. I do think LBs can get over size/speed deficiencies, but to do this, they have to be amazing and diagnosing a play. Shea was never this in college. He was a true product of playing against lower talent. His knock was that he was a good pass rusher, but scouts were concerned if it would translate to the pro level due to his size/strength being subpar. Personally I think he's cut if he's outplayed, but our LB personnel is terrible so I think he'll be here come week 1. He won't be starting though. Bostic will start, although he isn't anything special either.

Shea is a McNown caliber mistake at this point

This is BRUTAL hyperbole.

McLellin was a 19th pick overall picked to fill a role on defense. It sucks he is a 1st round bust just like say Chris Williams was at OT. But neither bust compares to missing on a supposed 1st round franchise QB you traded up to get.

I'm not disagreeing, but the difference is that Williams seemed a decent pick at the time. Shea was a huge reach, and he flat out stinks.

Not really. One was a 12th pick, the other a 19th pick. It's not like they traded up in to the top 5 for McNown. Both are busting out fast. I would say it was a good comparison.

Except Cade held out and signed a huge 7 year $22 mil deal.
