I think it’s funny that Team USA were so desperate to play against Canada and beat Canada, and yet none of the players or management have had the guts to come out and say how abhorrent they find the 51st state stuff. They can’t play Canada at hockey if Canada no longer exists as a separate country. And half of the players would lose their spots on the team. Show some self interest, boys!

They’re never gonna open up light that anyways because then everyone will talk about them saying it.

The quality of the game last night was that this became a side topic on WIP this morning, so it has broken through on people reveling in the Super Bowl

Should be proof for ensuring that NHL’ers participate in the Olympics. Always loved watching that.

There are so many scrubs in the league that seeing the best talented guys, such a joy to watch even if it’s a limited amount of games.

NHL is just pissy bc they can make cash from a tournament like this one. Pigs.

Yeah but they got their viral moment(s) in the sports world last night because it was NHL rules.

Pretty big night for them. Interested to see the ratings in the US.

I know we are supposed to avoid being overly political... But the anthem boo criticism is ridiculous. If another country has their leader saying they want to takeover your country and wants to economically penalize it. The LEAST you can do is boo that countries anthem if you are somewhere and it is played to show your displeasure. You would be a lame pushover to sit thru it and politely clap

Konecny should play over Marchand. Marchand has been looking really old and slow for a game played at this high pace.

Exactly. F*ck Trump and his deranged, demented babbling. Everyone knows Canada was booing him in unison, 40 million strong, not all our friends among the wider American population, your players, flag or anthem. We are booing President Musk and Putin's lackeys Trump and Vance. That's it. They are going to throw Ukraine to the wolves. Traitors. If doofus will shut his friggin pie hole about Canada, we'll be happy to keep providing electricity to half the border states. YOU get your dictator under control, it's not on us. Thank for coming to my F*ck Trump Ted Talk.

The NHL will likely do nothing meaningful to build off it but every once in a while a broken clock is right. In a down time sports wise this tournament has been a hit.

It’s actually annoying to me the notion going around is it’s just an exhibition game(s). It’s gimmicky to a degree but it’s still a best on best where a championship is being awarded. So not surprising the players are 100% bought in. Obviously being a decade plus removed from the last best on best tournament has played a factor in upping the stakes too.

Well they’re doing Olympics next year and then going every other year with the World Cup for the next three cycles.

Interesting viewpoint.

Ukrainians have died by the hundreds of thousands because a senile man thought it was a good idea to create the equivalent of a situation of foreign missiles pointed at Houston - situated in Mexico.

I’ve worked with some of the new comers. Have sat with them through tears, etc.

The West destroyed a whole generation of beautiful people, for what exactly. Destroyed their own economies, destroyed over a million lives with pride? All because they wanted NATO expansion? Mineral, and farmland rights?

But it doesn’t matter. They are across the ocean. Slavs. As long as entitled, and frankly stupid people feel like they’ve “won”. The West lead them right into a guillotine, and and now are indeed running away when there is no more Ukrainian blood to be shed unless conscription is lowered to 18. Like I said. Pigs.

If you’d like, can discuss away from public chat - you’d be surprised to hear viewpoints from news that area, and the people themselves.

Take care, apologies as always - if not “hockey” related :)

I mean that certainly is a take... but Ukraine gained independence in the early 90s with the fall of the Soviet Union. It was guaranteed protected sovereignty by an agreement with the US and Russia if Ukraine gave up the Soviet nukes on their territory with other NATO nations like France and I believe England also agreeing to help Ukraine protect it's sovereingty.

Once Putin got control of Russia he's been attempting to rebuild the Soviet Union. He's gone after breakaway nations. In 2014 he invaded Ukraine and took control of Crimea and had Russia military help back and support militias to rebel in the eastern Donbas region.

There were no US missiles in Ukraine in 2014. The US withdrew from a missile treaty in 2019 (which had become worthless anyway since Russia was ignoring it) the US then did have discussions about possibly moving missiles for NATO defense into Ukraine. That never actually happened and Putin invaded.

I can't look into an alternate history that never happened, but I am hard pressed not to believe that Putin was going to continue aggression against Ukraine at some point. If attempts to install pro-Russia puppet governments (like Belarus has) continued to be unsuccessful in Ukraine... Even had the US never paid Ukraine any attention, floated any ideas for missile batteries, etc...

Democratic and Republican regimes have played high stake games of RISK with the peoples losing often just being 'foreigners' in other countries. That much is entirely true... but I certainly do believe Ukraine was always going to be targeted and invaded by Putin.

Appreciate the civil response.

Russia made it abundantly clear that Ukraine was a red line if it was ever to join NATO. The US is well known for helping to overthrow regimes, play with public opinion - the USAID leaks are just a very recent example.

That aside, it should have come down to adults in the room to speak to Ukraine about remaining a neutral state. Stuck between two superpowers, what was the best for their own people?

A comedian being put in place that was Friendly with the West? I do not agree with Putin for invading. It was grotesque, for the hundreds of thousands, of his own people that also died - along with Ukrainian brothers/sisters.

But the West is just as disgustingly guilty for fueling this as long as they have. The time for adults in the room was before the invasion, for meetings with Russia, for compromise. The time for compromise was when Ukraine held on during the first Russian offensive, before they were lead into a bulldozer into a failed “counter offensive” that decimated their army.

Now there will be compromise from a position of weakness, with again - how many lives lost. Putin is a POS, but Western expansionist warmongers are just as guilty.

I feel for the Ukrainian people who now will have their land sold off. It was their blood that was spilt. Washington/London, deserve to be condemned just as much as Moscow.

It’s time for it to end, and the West has continuously been losing conflicts whether in the Middle East, or now Ukraine. Perhaps a change in strategy is in order. Enough people have died for nothing. What is the purpose of the current base being built in Romania? How would the US feel if that was being done in say Mexico City.

Straight up incorrect. Every part of it. Holy shit.

Putin started to interfere in Ukraine from the start twenty years ago, well ahead of the CIA countering with their own influences. It was never about NATO for Putin, it is about protecting Russian speakers in the Eastern Ukraine, same as it was in Georgia. Putin also believes the state should support Transinistra as well, which would be occupied if he had his way.

The response led to an even larger expansion of NATO on Russia's border with Finland regardless (even though it is a mountainous border, not flat). Russian hardliners are embarred by Gorbachev and want to reverse history at least to where it extends to native Russian speakers moved around by Stalin.
