I will be disappointed for the first time if we don't have a 15 or so point jump in the standings next season. I figure the team has to eventually break out.

An exciting offseason is needed to take that next step. Like Jakey said, it's all about timing and I think the time to start moving assets is here. We're asset rich and in good shape for it. Just feels like the time BA has been saving up for has arrived.
15 points is a big jump, if we fade and finish with 75 points it could happen. BA/Bear have never had a major jump in points. If we finish with 83, a jump to 98 would be huge, I am all for it:)

BA has said, many times, that he was given the green light from Meruelo to spend what he needed. Timing is all it is.

Reports said otherwise.

Yes.... he put together a big staff with a pedigree. But we were still playing cap games to ice a team at the bottom. Where we didn't was when Chayka tried making a splash bringing in Phil Kessel and Taylor Hall. But that was way back when Meruelo bought the franchise and wanted to make a splash (NOT unlike what Matt Ishiba tried with the Suns and we're seeing how that's been working out now)..... and it still goes back to where corners were being cut all around elsewhere.

Smith & Fan Expectations
3. Utah fans expectations. Most fans are entirely new to the sport and will tolerate however they play. They'll be good when the novelty factor has started to fade. There's no fan or media pressure for this team to start making short-term moves.
Yeah, I would think Utah is in a position similar to we were in the mid 90s. A team sort of gets dropped in your lap out of thin air; they're "on the verge" instead of a 10-win expansion team so that's fun and encouraging; not that many people know the league, the players, how teams are built, etc etc. (at least I didn't in 1996) so there will be patience....

Now if the team follows the Jets/Yotes curse...they'll easily make the playoffs 5 of the next 6 years but not make it out of the first round...and then the fans will start getting restless...etc etc....

Well, it might be a controversial take but I'll just say it anyway... I feel like we overrate Boedker slightly due to the memory of his overtime goals against Chicago in the 2012 playoffs. Both of which, if you look at them, were almost entirely on Crawford's misplay. It could have been anyone just tossing the puck on net (or in the case of the second one even, having the partial breakaway) only to see Crawford have a brain fart on both.

I can never respond directly on mobile...

@cobra427

It is lofty. When I look at how the young guys are developing, better luck with injuries, But & Sim, any moves BA makes before next season to improve the bottom lines, etc... I think it's doable.

I feel injury alone cost us a lot in the standings this season and we shouldn't be hit as hard next season. That alone goes a long way to a big jump. Replace any passengers (Crouse, Maccelli, Bjugstad) and add everything else.

We'll see!

Boy memories ….

I 5hink we got the short end of the stick as far as luck goes ….everytime we had a great team …or traded for grea5 players , there was a lock out , or lockdown before we could see what could have happened..

2012 after getting to the quarters…..the year we traded for Brett Hull and Nedved….Hull would have been a different player if he hadn’t taken a year off

Then Kolanos ,and Mueller getting concussions ( we should retire the number 11)

Then how many times did we get screwed in the draft ?

Then for me as a Jets fan ..it was a kick in the head losing Selanee

Yeah, I remember going to the playoff series against the Ducks that first year, and it was "that guy was ours? wow, I mean I like Tverdovsky and all (he had a great year), but why did they let Selanne go?"

Dang didn't know that... We're they his hires
Smith kept the GM he inherited and replaced the coach once. They ditched HC Snyder after the 1st Rd playoff exit in 2022. Since then, HC Will Hardy has had progressively worse seasons. Anyone on this forum could probably coach an NBA team to win only 25% of their games.

But then again, the Jazz have the 3rd lowest salary in the league, so it appears they are in rebuild mode or the owner is saving cash to pour into his new hockey team. ;)

Without checking, I am pretty sure Utah has had big roster turnover as well to go along with 2 coaches, so they didn't stand pat. Coach gets shot first usually.

Good read. My take and summary: Injuries are the built in excuse, they are happy with young players progress, Crouse and Maccelli are getting less ice time and different roles which effects their production, they say they are right where they want to be 6 points out of the playoffs with all the injuries. Full team back in line up after the break, BA says we will see what we have, he can then "evaluate". Team is already built so not much action expected at TDL.

I hope the team goes on a run now that we are going to be healthy. I don't like that injury built in excuse, I don't think all of our problems are because of injuries, I guess we will see how the team finishes out.

GM's never tip their hand about trades. I don't like using injuries as an excuse either, but with everyone back after this tourney, that excuse is no longer.

The next one will be: it takes time for the team to play well together with all the injured players back in the line up, or goal tending was bad, it will be something. Maybe BA can add something at the TDL by giving up Maccelli or Crouse and a second for a 2c or defensive 3/4D, all I can think of, it has to help us in the future too. I think he stands pat either way.

Maatta Lamoureux

-plan to move But and Iginla into bigger roles when possible then the rebuild is really complete

Looks like Stauber was recalled to Utah. Wells recalled to Tucson and Matikka sent to Allen.

Hope Ingram is okay. More games for Veggie before the TDL and see if Stauber is a reasonable back up on an expiring contact.
