OT: 'Off topic' thoughts

You only need 1 Fukushima or Chernobyl every 25 years to make it worrisome enough. How much safer is hydro electric or geothermal generated power?
Nuclear is much safer than it used to be, and we learn from past mistakes like Fukushima. I wouldn't even count Chernobyl considering when it was built and who built it, obviously anything intelligently built today would be 1000 times safer.

People dying from fossil fuel generation isn't a risk, it's a guarantee. This from Chat GPT:

The number of people who die each year due to fossil fuel generation is significant. Most of these deaths are linked to air pollution caused by burning coal, oil, and gas for energy. According to major research:
A 2021 study published in Environmental Research estimated that:

More than 8 million people died in 2018 alone from pollution linked to fossil fuel emissions.

That’s about 1 in 5 deaths worldwide—a staggering figure.

🚨 What causes these deaths?

  • Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) from burning fossil fuels penetrates deep into the lungs and bloodstream.
  • Leads to heart disease, stroke, lung cancer, and respiratory infections.
  • Particularly harmful in densely populated and industrial areas.

🔬 Key Studies:

  • Harvard, University of Birmingham, and University of Leicester (2021): Estimated 8.7 million deaths in 2018 from fossil fuel air pollution.
  • Global Burden of Disease Study (IHME) also supports similar figures for pollution-related deaths (though not all directly from fossil fuels).

I don't there is going to be martial law. If there was, I think it would work out incredibly badly for Trump. The Republican party would turn on him instantaneously. US citizens? Jesus, I can't even imagine how visceral their reaction, and defiance, would be.
If you're not going to answer the question, why keep responding?

I would say give it about three months and most of this will be scaled back. Trump needs support to pass tax and debt ceiling bills.
A lot of countries are signing free tariffs deals in the next two weeks. Argentina, Isreal and a host of Asian countries coming forward to get the ball rolling.

Bonds will come down along with interest rates.

Nearly 6 trillion in investment into the US coming into the country + 230,000 new private jobs. 😀

My stocks will be booming and I am glad at the overall reset of the market. There is too much fear mongering out there right now and this will all pass.

Most people I know are really pumped about the next quarter.

Good luck to all.

We have the biggest nuke plant in Canada here in the GTA. Designed to last 40 years. Some phases were built in 1965. The last phase was 1980’s. Government just extended the life for another 12 years. Who should I believe the original designers or the government beureaucrats. Who really don’t want to deal with the expense in building a new one.

If you can’t earn your way in through merit, several countries will let you buy your way in.

I had a nephew couldn’t get into med school. There was a place in the US that would take him for 250 grand but that was 20 years ago.
This happens all the time in law. Canadians who couldn't get into law school here would go to Australia or the UK, or a low-end US law school (Florida Coastal School of Law!) and then apply for articling or associate positions here. It would be polite to say that they were not in demand.

I'm always happy to answer. Is your question what I would think of Trump if he declared martial law? I would think he is a moron. I mean, I don't think much of him now, so I suppose that would be the cherry on top.

Law school in Canada is strange, extremely difficult to get in after an undergrad degree. Very easy after a post grad degree. That’s what I’ve been told.

The only point I would disagree with is the idea of new investment coming into the US. Companies made those same promises in 2016 (see Foxconn, and Apple), and nothing ever came of it. Apple is never going to move any significant production to the US, and none of the low-end production will, or should, ever come back to this side of the world. It will all stay in China, Vietnam, Laos, Bangladesh, etc.

I think he's being a good dude and hinting at moving on from a conversation lacking a basic premise both sides can agree on. Remember: he's one of them fancy jive talking lawyers.

On that last point: @Evilhomer just how much more than everyone do divorce lawyers and ambulance chasers make?
Similar to art, it all depends how good you are. Surprisingly some make very little and some are freakin kings. lol!

Personal injury lawyers have the potential to make the most, but Canada is definitely not the US in that regard. Sounds gruesome, but the biggest settlements are never in death cases - the biggest I have seen have been in cases of physician negligence during child delivery where the child survives but requires lifetime 24 hour care.

Absent the very small group of lawyers who specialize in that area (a good friend of mine is one of them, and he does well, but also carries some pretty deep emotional baggage because of the nature of those files), the highest partner comp is probably still M&A and public markets. But it's Canada, so we make a fraction of what our US colleagues make. Everything is much, much smaller here.

Not sure what your point is here but OK.

I don't even remember the original question as it was so long ago but I think it was more along the lines of you saying USA>>>Canada and dismissing the orange wave as "silliness" and not really a big deal. So I was just wondering if he declared martial law a couple of weeks from now, if that would change anything or you'd shrug that off as just more "silliness". I think what's happening is very serious, and dismissing it as silliness isn't wise at all.

The issue isn't that Trump is a moron, it's the fact that the USA elected someone like him. He's the symptom, not the cause and even if he goes away after 4 years, the underlying issues remain.

It was a simple question based on a hypothetical scenario which IMHO doesn't require a basic premise both sides can agree on. But yeah, I'm not falling for all that jive, I just kept repeating the question. :)

The point was that nuclear plants can be dangerous for a number of reasons. Three mile island was another instance. If I had my way there would be none and electricity would have to be made another way.

And the nuclear waste is with us for 1000’s of years. We made it through the first 50.

As I said, they're a lot less dangerous than they once were and fossil fuels are already killing millions every year which is a guarantee, not a risk. And that's not even getting into climate change and massive damage to the environment.

It’s why I suggested the better route would be hydro-electric such as Niagara Falls. Or geothermal such as Iceland is turning to. Sure we may have to dig a little deeper. That shouldn’t be an impossibility.

Another way, so far it doesn’t exist, or do you actually believe green energy will work?

Swing and a miss, Canada doesn’t sit on a volcano like Iceland does……..

Green energy can work as supplemental energy but not as a main source. I just found out Canada does indeed have a geothermal plant in Alberta. BC and Yukon have the highest temperatures available in Canada. Must be because of the mountains. Obviously hydro-electric works just build more plants. We have plenty of running water in this country.

Running water usually needs a dam, if it was easy to do it would have been done already. Green energy causes more problems than it solves, I worked thirty years for Ontario Hydro/Hydro One so I have more than a clue about this, trust me……..

Nothing that happens in the next 3.5 years will change my opinion that the US affords far greater career opportunities than Canada. I'm not sure how that could possibly be debated. Salaries in the US for professions have always been higher than Canada. The gap has simply continued to widen since I worked there. No government can change that.

Well that’s what I’ve read if you’re wealthy it’s best there. I agree Too much turmoil now. Millions out protesting yesterday. Phenomenal really.

60 percent of our electricity is hydro now. Only 15% from nukes. Nuclear is the shiny new toy.

If you're really wealthy, I'm guessing there are lots of better places than the US. Give me a couple of hundred million and a big US (or Canadian) city is just about the last place I would live.
