My dad grew up in Beckley WV. He "lost" his accent in the navy (no doubt due to endless teasing) but both he and my Grandma had a lot of Appalachian in their phrasing. For her there was no past tense. We "eat" meant we could be eating now, tomorrow or yesterday. For my father the WV came out only when he was frustrated. Then he'd let fly with stuff we never quite understood but we knew it was best to disappear til he was done being mad (or bring him a Coke and a Hershey bar). That's not southern, that's Appalachian, and yes there is a difference.
It's another pet peeve of mine, West Virginia never has been and never will be southern. They literally broke off from Virginia and formed their own state to stay in the Union. I like the area, kind of reminds me of middle Tennessee when I was a kid, the sweet tea is suspect though.
