so you're projecting kadri to go up, and spezza to continue to have bad years? he missed a year of hockey and was ppg in the new year (you know, when he was healthy again).

let's remove the obviously biased part of your statement

23 year old 50 point center who is an rfa at the end of his current deal for 30 year old ufa ppg center.

it still looks good for kadri (as i said, he's a good piece), but the removal of the use of your outlier stat brings it much closer to reality (reality being kadri alone is not a weak return for spezza).

Hossa, Pominville, Vanek, Moulson, Iginla, etc

What rental returned a piece as good as Kadri?

If Spezza was not a UFA to be my view would change... UFAs just don't return greatness

Uhhh... Kadri = Greatness?

Also...

Hackett + Larsson + 1st + 2nd >>>> Kadri... and Spezza >> Pominville

I wont even address the other players because none of them are even comparable based on their situations. Vanek also returned Moulson + 1st + 2nd if I'm not mistaken....

Vanek is the only one close to a comparable, and he returned Moulson, a top 10 (i think) pick, and a 2nd. I think it's pretty clear Spezza would likely be dealt to a contender where he is willing to re-sign (he does have a limited NTC after all) so bidders don't have to worry about him wanting to test free agency the way Vanek was very vocally going to do.

For some reason Buffalo fleeced both teams they traded with by sending Pominville, a decent but not great top 6 player to Minnesota for a king's ransom and Vanek, a decent but not great top 6 player for another king's ransom

It was ridiculous

Kadri I'd take over that Piminville deal... He's the only player to make an impact.

The Islanders botched Vanek deal is not even to bad
- Moulson UFA to be
- 1st protected and can be moved to next year
- 2nd

How many people here would move Spezza for Mike Ribero, 2016 1st, 2nd?

That's the Vanek deal

Scratch that... Ribero is signed for three more years...
It be like Vermette + 20161st + 2nd for Spezza... That's the Vanek deal

So I think we've beaten the top 4 d-man / Spezza thing to death. Assuming we re-sign Hemsky and our top 6 is set, how could we improve the bottom 6?

I think we could use a wrecking ball type player with some offensive upside. Someone like DSP from Anaheim would be great but probably not available.

We could probably pick someone up like Clutterbuck on the cheap because he had a down year. I was just thinking we could get Smith some better scorers and make a better two way line.

i doubt we move him without an extension in place. that's probably where we have the difference in opinion

How many people here are using the heatley deal as a baseline for what kind of value our players have?

Were not getting Kadri, Gardiner and the leafs 1st, but if all were offered is Kadri, we'll likely hold off for a better offer. He's a good player, but not worth a guy who is 2 years removed from hart votes, a >pt per game season, and is now just rounding back into form after an injury.

Greening for Clutterbuck? Similar age, similar styles, and a similar cap hit.

Greening could use a change of scenery type deal, and maybe Clutterbuck might be available because he had a down year.

Clutterbuck has some offensive upside and is more consistently physical as he led the league in hits a couple times in Minny (and they were real hits, not Greening hits) while also scoring 15-19 goals with no PP time.

He could replace Condra in the bottom 6 effectively breaking up the GSN line by forcing Neil to the 4th.

Hoffman-Smith-Clutterbuck could be a decent energy line. You got some good physical play, and Smith tends to show a little offense when he has better wingers.

You could throw in Condra or Da Costa. Get a 3rd pick back if it's Stephane. That gives him a good shot at making the NHL full time and you know the Isles are always looking for cheap talent to fill out a roster

Again, I really doubt Da Costa + Greening would get it done, even without asking for an additional 3rd.

Clutterbuck is so awesome... The Islanders would be dumb to move him.

He's basically what you want a 3rd liner to be...

The Sens should sign Simin Hjamalsson... The Hawks are probably going to sign him... But he would be a fantastic addition if the team could.

Make up for not having a 1st this year

Spezza isn't a rental if he goes to Toronto.

And why are we comparing deadline deals with draft day deals again?

A rental is just that, a rental. Any team serious about acquiring Spezza does so assuming they will extend him. That team can either do the audition approach that BM did with Andy, or they can just extend him immediately before or after a trade.

I have to think that if Spezza is dealt it will be after an extension has been arranged

There's no point in trading him without one

First of all, Gardiner is ok, but he's closing in on Chris Campoli territory. The pick is #8? In a draft that may be historically bad (which everyone knows)

Kadri is good, and he has potential to be a decent #1 or 2 Center. He'll never come close to pizza line Spezza.

Also if Spezza had more term on his contract, people would be saying we won't get anything for him because of his cap hit.

You just can't win.

A player like Spezza doesn't become available too often. Surely there will be a couple of teams interested in him that can make the dollars work.

I was thinking Jordan Staal was moved a year out from UFA and signed a contract extension after the move.

So if Spezza goes with a 3-5 year extension I can see similar value. Staal younger with elite D, Spezza older with elite offense.

Brandon Sutter
Brian Dumolin
1st (Derrick Pouliott)

So Spezza with extension I think these would be reasonable returns

Patrick Berglund + Ty Rattie + Joel Edmunson

Tomas Hertl + Matt Nieto + Matt Tennyson

Nick Bonino + Emerson Etem + Sami Vatanen

If the team moves Spezza the summer is the time to do it and make sure he goes with an extension

It was Sutter, Dumolin + 8th overall. Funny, its actually quite similar to Kadri + Gardiner + 8th overall... with the obvious difference that Spezza has scored more than 50 points 10/10 seasons, as opposed to Staal's 0/7.

yes
Staal looked like he was gonna breakout offensively with a bigger role while Spezza is looking like he's on the start of the down side of his career.

I dont see a team willing to pay a premium for Spezza considering everything. Especially with other centers potential available that are signed long term.

Second half Spezza looked pretty similar to the 11-12' all mighty Spezza everyone's praising.
