This is generally a very bad idea, if you force an athlete through a rigorous weight change program whether it be to gain or lose a lot in a short period of time. If they're not ready for it mentally or physically, you're setting yourself up for failure.

My memory isn't my best attribute but iirc the Jackets tried to put Nikita Filatov through something like that and it completely blew up in their face.
Yes... it's so much better for the kid to let him play in the majors when he's horribly out of shape. He's established an impression as a very poor defensive player already due to the Blue Jays' "kindness".

Oh god are we going to get a "back in my day" bit here or more of a "The PC police wont let people lose weight!"

I know MLB offseason is long but camps start relatively soon? I feel like something should be doon soon. I would want time to restructure my life if I had just signed elsewhere.

Rosenthal: Blue Jays, Mets face different challenges in their pursuit of Springer
Free agents George Springer and Michael Brantley are close friends. They are represented by the same agency, Excel Sports Management. Imagine if the Blue Jays signed both in the kind of package deal more common in the NBA than Major League Baseball. Springer and Brantley would not only elevate the Jays’ offense but also provide leadership for the team’s young position players, transforming the franchise.

I’d be on board with this if they (Springer and Brantley) go the Suter and Parise route and take discounts to allow the team to sign them. Yes I know there’s no hard salary cap like in hockey, but yea.

Springer @ 22M a year, Brantley @9M a year, throw $30M at Bauer, and 8M for Walker. They claim they have $75-$76M to spend this off-season, so go do that. That totals $69M and they still have $6-$7M to look for a reliever, or circle back to Giles to close games.

Signing Springer would put Grichuk in RF. Teoscar would probably rotate OF/1b/Dh. I think Vlad coming into camp in really good shape might get him back to 3b. He looks good in the recent pics I’ve seen.

MLB Rumors: Masahiro Tanaka Seeking 1-year Contract Worth $15M-20M in Free Agency
Masahiro Tanaka may suit up for a different team than the New York Yankees for the first time in his major league career.

According to Andy Martino of SNY, a reunion likely isn't in the cards for the Bronx Bombers and the free agent. That is especially true since New York added Corey Kluber this offseason.

As for Tanaka, Martino reported he is looking for a one-year contract worth between $15-20 million.

The report suggested the right-hander may return to Japan if he cannot land the deal he is looking for this offseason.

[Bleacher Report] Masahiro Tanaka Seeking 1-year Contract Worth $15M-20M in Free Agency and is unlikely to re-sign with the Yankees

I would offer him 15 but if it took 20M to get it done, then I gladly do that on a 1 year deal

Getting Roark and Grichuk out after bringing in Springer would be great for payroll flexibility. Could allow us to front load that 1st year a little more making it easier to manage down the road.

Roark would be easy to get rid of if you retained but I doubt anyone wants Grichuk.

I made a proposal earlier in the offseason. Trade Grichuk’s (30M over 3 years) and Roark’s 12M for Verlander’s expiring 33M.

Hurts us this season as we lose 10M to spend but helps out a lot to get rid of Grichuk’s 10M in 2022 and 2023.

Astros have a limited budget and are set to lose Springer and Brantley to free agency. Grichuk is from Houston so he can fill an Of position. Roark gives them innings in the backend of their rotation. Plus they save 30M on Verlander who may not make contributions for them this season.

Jays could afford to sit Verlander all year. Even with Verlander’s additional 10M this season, I’m sure some of not all is covered by insurance. Jays would still have $50-60M to spend this off season. More importantly it opens two roster spots. CF for Springer and a backend spot for an off season addition.

There is a chance Verlander could be ready by the playoffs which could be a huge boost for the Jays. If he looks ready you can offer him a 18M QO, take him on a 1 year deal for 2022 or get a pick back if he signs elsewhere.

Something like this would work for sure. The only other option I see for a guy like Grichuk is to send him to a team that can't draw anybody like Baltimore.

Giles is out for the season.

Baltimore would be perfect so he doesn’t kill them anymore.

Where Grichuks career numbers rank vs Baltimore;
Hits: 1st
Doubles: 1st
HRs: 1st
TB: 1st
Runs: 1st
BA: 1st
OBP: 1st
SLG: 1st
OPS: 1st
OPS+: 1st
wRC: 1st

Only categories he wasn’t first in was walks and stolen bases. Walks he is still top 5 and he didn’t attempt a steal vs Baltimore.

The Mets and Blue Jays have been the two teams most closely connected to George Springer this winter. Jon Morosi of MLB.com feels the Mets have the geographical upper hand, noting that the Connecticut native and former UConn star would prefer to play close to home. (Springer’s home town of New Britain is approximately a two-hour drive from Queens, compared to seven-plus hours to Toronto). Of course, geographical ties of this sort are often discussed as potential tiebreakers for prominent free agents but are rarely enough to overcome significant discrepancies in teams’ respective contract proposals. Indeed, Morosi acknowledges the possibility the Mets eventually turn their attention elsewhere, particularly if they manage to sign reliever Brad Hand.

From MLBTR

I doubt we get Springer but if the Mets move on then Springer has no choice but the Jays.

If the Jays land Springer and the way Vladdy looks then trying Vladdy one more time at 3B may not be a bad option to fit Springer in. Springer to CF. Grichuk to RF. Teoscar to DH and Tellez’s superior defense stats at 1st over Vladdy.

Vladdy to 3rd and you sign a reliable insurance policy for the infield like Simmons.
