The more I think about it, the more DJ makes sense to me over the other infielders:

1) He's asking for a reasonable 5/100m, and yet the Yankees are only offering him $4/75m
2) Yankees apparently want to be under luxury tax this year - which only gives them ~$30 mil to spend, and they still need to buy a starter or two.
3) Torres is an awful defender at SS - they want to move him to 2B. They can then sign a number of different cheaper ss options on the market.
4) Apparently NYM aren't making DJ a priority
5) He loves hockey. He loves Shanahan (we can get Brendan to help us pitch him).

For us, we get a leader with all-star skills that we need. We get a guy who plays good 2b/3b and can backup SS, which is what we need. We get our leadoff hitter.

And very importantly, we get the guy on a 4/5 year contract, instead of trying to sign Lindor to a 8-10 year deal. This isn't an issue atm, but in 5 years when Bo, Vlad, Biggio, Pearson et all are in for a big payday, it's good to not be tied down to any massive vet contracts (even if Lindor will still probably be worth his).

I don't really see the Kim risk at all. He's 25 years old and costs only money. And the money isn't even going to be that much. The talk is only $8-$10 million per year. You can sign Kim and try to develop him or you'll spend that money anyways if their interest in guys like Wong or Simmons is true.

Signing Kim is like signing a free prospect and doesn't stop them from trying for another proven infielder like DJ or Lindor.

I see it almost along the lines of when we signed Gurriel as an IFA. We paid 22 million over 7 years for him.

A Jays fan from South Korea's take on Kim:

Coles Notes:

EDIT: This guy isnt a bandwagon fan that jumped on when Ryu signed. He was a fan since the early 2000s because of Halladay.
Man those comments really make him very undesirable. Very strong arguments.

We need some good material to amuse Trevor Bauer.

Maybe if he came north we could nickname him Trevor Sutherland

I'm still nervous that he's going to get paid for the huge bump he got from playing in a Little League stadium the last two years.

His career stats in Toronto are similar

In 12 games against mostly terrible pitching (10 of them were against the vaunted 2019 Jays rotation) with a .400 BABIP, yeah. And even then his OPS is nearly .100 points higher at Yankee Stadium.

He's still a good hitter and a really good fit for the Jays, but if you expect him to perform like the last two years I think you're going to be really disappointed with what you get.

Every week I think there will be a signing and there is nothing.

If there isn’t anything before Christmas then I think we are doomed for a very slow offseason. Agents are waiting for the composition of the season and if there will be fans or not.

The guys who were expecting to get a 1 year deal and the ones who want a one year deal will sign. But the multiple year guys who want big money will wait it out until owners set their budgets which will be when they know fans will be back and/or when the season starts.

And when I say this, watch there be 4-5 major signings occur.

The only real deadlines right now are the guys posted from Japan and Korea. We should find out on Kim shortly before or after Christmas, but not sure if a guy like him will make the infielder market shake loose or not. Maybe if the Blue Jays don't get him, otherwise could just be quiet into January and February.

There is definitely no sport with a worse off season then baseball. It is my favourite sport but man it is always annoying in the winter lol. Pretty well every other sport has a key day(s) where you can basically bank on major roster moves and signings happening.

Usually, the GM meetings in December stuff happens but not this year. I like hockey how most things occur when free agency starts.

It can be...but then you have years where even that didn't have the major guys going until the weeks leading up to camp. It is just a needlessly drawn out process every year at this point.

I think this year in particular, it's a win for guys to hold out. They're going to want to wait and see if owners get some more comfort about this upcoming year's revenues and decide to spend. If they sign now, the market is short of buyers.

Sure they could. They could also miss out on the options that are in play.

If the Jay's are handing out a 125 million dollar contract to Springer he should take it lol
