Do you realize how volatile catching prospects are? How many catchers of the future have we had that never made it (Quiroz, Jimenez, Phelps, Cash, Pentecost)? Not saying we have to sign Realmuto, but he's the best two-way catcher in baseball at the most difficult position to develop. Remember Russel Martin's impact in his first two years in Toronto before his age-decline? Realmuto is as good as Russell, and two years younger.

Its a poor argument to compare our worst scouting and development regime in Riccardi 's prospect to one of our best in Shapiro and Atkins. Especially, when we are reaping the rewards right now.

But we arent talking prospect here when it comes to Jansen and McGuire, and to an extent Kirk. McGuire is at least a defense first MLB catcher and Kirk is knocking on the door with elite hit tools from the catching position.

Jansen has yet to play a full season and he has put up 2.6 fWAR over 626 PAs good enough for the 15th best catcher in the league since his debut on August 13, 2018 and that is including his atrocious bat. Jansen first 162 games already is in the Jays top 15 all time among catchers - only Whitt, Molina, Fletcher, Borders and Martin are ahead of him. Only Martin and Whitt did it more than once. Jansen is already 9th in fWAR in Jays history among catchers. Give him time and his bat will come around and we are looking at a 3-4 fWAR catcher under control for 5 years.

For comparison sake;
JT Realmuto's
first 627 PAs produced 0.6 fWAR - aged 23-25 seasons
Danny Jansen's
first 626 PAs produced 2.6 fWAR - aged 23-25 seasons

Big big difference with Martin. I didnt like the Martin contract but it was clear we needed an upgrade. Jays catchers put -0.4 fWAR good enough for 26th in league in 2014. Our 2 catchers under contract for 2015 were Navarro and Thole who put up a cumulative -0.7 fWAR in 2014. Plus Martin wasnt blocking any top rated catchers. The only 2 catchers in our top 30 were Pentecost and Jansen. When Martin was signed Pentecost was drafted 6 months prior and Jansen had 284 PAs in rookie ball.

Two completely different scenarios.

In 2015, we desperately needed a catcher with no legitimate prospect knocking on the door.

Now, we might be sitting on a star in the making with Jansen and have 3-4 other options behind making peanuts. No need to invest a good portion of your limited funds on an older player who will block legitimate players making league minimum.

“Reached 94” sounds inconsistent and concerns me for a guy that has a career four-seam fastball average of 95.9 MPH and is coming off a 2020 season in which he averaged a career low 92.8 MPH on his heater. Injuries including a recent back surgery and a flexor strain has me down on his outlook as anything more than a 1 year + team option flier personally.

Yeah, he was hitting 100 in the no-hitter against the Jays and generally averaged 96-97 through his prime. If he's topping out at 94, I wouldn't have a lot of hope that he's going to be very effective.

Each team's best prospect 'gift'
Blue Jays: Simeon Woods Richardson, RHP (No. 4)
The Mets parted with two promising young arms shortly before the 2019 Trade Deadline when they sent Woods Richardson, the club’s 2018 second-round pick, and 2016 first-rounder Anthony Kay to Toronto in the Marcus Stroman deal. After finishing his first full season in the Florida State League, Woods Richardson was a standout at Toronto’s alternate site as a 19-year-old, demonstrating advanced feel and command for an arsenal that just continues to improve.

Teoscar have too many games to count?

Offensively sure. He’s an awful fielder. Should be a DH.

Yeah, I meant more in terms of being a "high profile player" and not strictly from a value standpoint. He had 37 HR in 2019, which seems well beyond "I've never heard of this guy" level (though, yes, I do realize the tweet in question didn't even give his first name, so it could very well have been some unknown guy named Bell... that's perfectly fair!)

At the 5:20 mark; Bauer walking around with a Jays hat on about to play chess with his friend and says I have my “winning outfit on”.

That’s twice now he has a Jays hat on. To me clearly he is trolling Jays fans.

No way the Angels cheap out on pitching again. He is from LA, Angels or Dodgers make too much sense.

On the other hand, Toronto offered early and could realistically make multiple structure offers.

I would be perfectly comfortable simultaneously offering 1, 2, and long term deals.

That actually works well within what we are trying to do.

Toronto Blue Jays
A year after bottoming out and lucking into Austin Martin, the Blue Jays could find themselves taking advantage of a class flush with prep infielders, nabbing a power hitting corner infield type. Izaac Pacheco is not as well regarded as well as Brady House, but he probably has the best or second best prep power. Pacheco is an above average fielder, but a below average runner which has already cemented his pro position at the hot corner. Still, Pacheco has tremendous physicality and greater value as a lefthanded bat. What determines his standing in the first round is plate adjustments. Like House, he sold out for power too much and ended up striking out more than usual. If he can shorten his swing, he could justify his first round value.

The best landing spots for top free agents
George Springer and the Blue Jays

The Blue Jays look to be one of the Hot Stove’s more fascinating and aggressive teams. It would be surprising if they don’t come out of this offseason with at least one major free agent or trade piece. You can take your pick from the top of the position-player board, because this team has the positional and financial flexibility to accommodate any of them. But if the Blue Jays sign Springer for the outfield, they can still swing that blockbuster swap so many want to see for Francisco Lindor in the infield (we pitched one here) and go into 2021 with arguably the best lineup in baseball
