We don't have depth because all the best athletes play hockey or soccer (or come from backgrounds where baseball isn't a thing that would interest them unless they luck into it)

If Canada should be better at baseball because they've been playing it for so long, then the US should probably just dominate every sport to an insurmountable degree for the same reason. But they aren't the best soccer team in the world or hte best hockey team or the best at a lot of sports that aren't football, baseball, and basketball.

Canada has better baseball players than this, but like the US they've been denied a lot of their best talent because of injuries or decisions to skip the tourney. Difference is that the US has eleventy billion basball players in MLB so they can run out their B team or C team or M team and still have it made up entirely of MLB players who are better than most of what other countries can even hope to field at their best.

I mean it's not just against the us

I'm sure Mexico and Columbia will teabag us as well.

We consistently underperform in every sport that's not hockey or women's soccer.

The soccer story of this year was one of us finally reaching our potential after about 30 years of promise. Even in that it seems like we can't get out of our own way and take advantage of the momentum.

We're at least 10/15 years behind the Southern US in baseball development process and that's sad to see because the gap is only about to get wider.

I think country wide we need to do a significantly better job at youth development see the national caliber level.

Even in hockey we're not really that good at it, it's just too big to fail( and if we keep pricing out most of the population it won't be the case anymore even in that sport)

We need to be more creative to get the results we should be getting as a sports playing highly developed nation.

Australia seems to have the exact same issues we do yet consistently punch above their weight in baseball and hoops ( while being elite at rugby and cricket along with having the AFL)

They aren't as deep as you think. US loses all the players from Puerto Rico which would be part of their team in every other sport. Kinda like how the United Kingdom gets split up in Soccer but not the Olympics.

The Canadian National Junior Program does do a good job, they don't have the ability to produce MLBers like the USNDP and hockey because most end up going to the NCAA and getting drafted out of the NCAA instead.

That set the stage for a two-year, $25MM pact with the Giants — one which allowed him to opt out and retest the market next offseason after collecting half that sum. Stripling tells Shi Davidi of Sportsnet the incumbent Jays were among four teams that remained in the bidding throughout the process and said the club was willing to match the $25MM guarantee. However, he indicated the Giants’ willingness to include the opt-out was a decisive factor in his call to head to San Francisco. “I loved my time in Toronto and they were in the mix to the very end,” he told Davidi. “Essentially what it came down to was the Giants offered me an opt-out after the first year and the Blue Jays wouldn’t. That made it a no-brainer, really. … Once (the opt-out) was on the board, it was like, man, you can’t walk away from that. It’s as simple as that.
Well that sucks. Would have really wanted him back.

Finally someone not giving up on Leo Jimenez. Idk if he’s top 5, but he’s definitely hovering around the top 10 for me in terms of FV. Also holy depth! Lots of 45s, lots of 40+

A guy who has been something of a journeyman, and whose career really only took off with the Jays, I'm surprised and disappointed that he wouldn't take 2 yrs / $25 million and laugh all the way to a non- Silicon Valley Bank.

Surprised by how highly they rate Macko, and that Lukes can still be considered a prospect.

Much like our starting pitcher, I couldn't make it past the first inning of the USA-Canada match last night.

I love that they're throwing the age thing out the window and ranking Lukes, big brain move.

Poor Manny Beltre had a tough first go at rookie ball and has plummeted down every prospect list.

It was a very positive outlook on Macko and highlights just how nasty his pitches are. Even if the command doesn't clean up he could probably turn into a backend option. High variance but like Santos he could probably get big leaguers out now with his stuff.

Lukes is an interesting option. I'm not enamored by his skillset but he could probably bring some Rafa Ortega value to the team. He's a good depth option to have but I don't think he cracks the current Jays squad with Otto Lopez providing more versatility and right handedness off the bench.

I'm also surprised by Doughty being so low. Even if he has to get parked in left his power/contact potential is enough to foresee him as an everyday player.

He's laughing all the way to the bank anyways because the Giants' contract was also 2y/$25m. It just also came with a player option that the Jays wouldn't offer him.

Also he hasn't been a journeyman. The Jays were only his 2nd team. He pitched 4.5 years in LA then the Dodgers traded him to Toronto where he spent the last 2 and a half years.

Big time L for the graphic designer for the WBC broadcasts, putting Columbia's name on the score bug on a yellow background as white text with only (I think) a tiny bit of shadowing

EDIT: They eventually fixed it to a blue background.

And this is why they saved Skirrow for this game. Colombia's lineup is AAAA and he fared well in the upper minors last season. Tough luck for Bratt but Whitt basically waved the white flag before the US game started.

Also Edouard Julien is cracked. I know they have Polanco slated for 2B, but the Twins should do everything they can to try and get his bat in their lineup.
