To me there is two ways to acquire the player you are looking for; using money via free agency or via trade.

To me the Jays have 4 holes; they need 2 starting pitchers and 2 OFs.

At the moment there aren’t many free agents out there where I’m comfortable giving 3-4+ years to the likes of Benintendi or Profar.

As for trades to get anyone that fits your criteria you’re trading one of your catchers or prospects like Tiedemann or Moreno

I rather keep my prospects for the next wave or in season trades and spend just money. Which is why my plan is to address the 2 OF holes via free agency (Kiermaier, Gallo, Brantley or Conforto), 1 SP via free agency (Strip, Syndergaard, Manaea etc.) and the last SP via trade using one of Kirk, Moreno or Jansen.

Now if I can say pull off two separate trades where I’m acquiring say Alek Thomas and Pablo Lopez while signing Kiermaier and Syndergaard without dealing my top prospects (Tiedemann, Moreno, Barriera etc.) then I am all ears. Welcome to hear anyone out if they propose trades that are fair that can get it done. I’ve scanned it from top to bottom and I haven’t seen anything I like and that is fair.

Hence why I think the best and most realistic and reasonable option is sign two short term OFs, sign a short term starter and trade a catcher (preferable Jansen or Kirk in that order) for a good controllable starting pitching.
From everything I’m gathering they are looking to add one starter (perhaps optimistic about a Ryu mid season return) and 2 OF’s.

My best guess is they sign a starter and a 4th OF and acquire a starting OF via catcher trade.

They probably sign one good starter and if Ryu does return, they can use him to replace White or Kikuchi if they both suck.

Otherwise, they need a 5th starter at the TDL and that shouldn't be too hard or expensive to find.

I wouldn’t hold my breath, best case he is back in July. Medium case it’s August or September and I doubt you bring him in during the middle of a pennant race unless you have a huge lead. And by then the Jays would have likely made a trade for another starter if they are leading the division.

I think you have to prepare to bring in 2 starters just to be safe. 1 from the Stripling, Manaea, Syndergaard, tier or like a Lopez via trade and another from like the Lorenzen, Lyles, Cueto tier.

For the record, I agree and am hopeful they add two starters. But every time I hear Ross speak he talks about adding a starter. I don’t get the sense they are going for two.

I agree, in all likelihood they probably only add 1 starter. At the moment they may have too many pitchers already where someone has to be moved and it will be likely one of Cimber, or the slim possibility of White or Kikuchi. Or the even remote scenario of optioning Pop. They do have the option of running a 3 man bench to accommodate those pitchers but that means you can only add 1 OFer. And if you only add one OF he better be left handed and he better be a good one unless you’re running back essentially the same lineup.

Lineup (9): Jansen (C), Guerrero Jr. (1B), Merrifield (2B), Bichette (SS), Chapman (3B), Springer (RF), FA/Trade (CF), Gurriel (LF), Kirk (DH)

Bench (3): Moreno (C/OF), Espinal (SS/3B/2B/OF), and Biggio (2B/OF)

Rotation (5): Manoah, Gasuman, Berrios, #4 and #5

Bullpen (9): Romano, Swanson, Garcia, Bass, Mayza, Cimber, Pop, White and Kikuchi.

13 pitcher maximum rule means 4 man bench. There already isn't room for everyone in the pen and they're looking to add another pen arm. Which makes me believe 1 of White/Kikuchi starts until someone else(Tiedmeann, Zulueta, Ryu, trade deadline) is ready.

Manoah, Gausman, Berrios, FA, Kikuchi/White
Romano, Swanson, Garcia, Bass, Mayza/Richards, Cimber, FA, Kikuchi/White

Pop optioned until inevitable injuries, possibly Mayza too if the pen FA is a lefty

Maybe I’m missing something. Maybe I’m thinking too small. But can’t see use adding 2 impact pieces unless Tiedemann is on the table and/or Atkins has more than $30M to spend.

Sure the Jays could trade Bichette+ for Acuna, sign Correra, trade Jansen for Lopez and sign Stripling. That would be a great offseason, I just don’t think it’s happening. Limit resources with too many holes to fill.
Pretty reasoned post imo, this is pretty much how I feel too. I think one starter is fine though and I thinks that is the most likely scenario. I don’t see two getting done.

Oh yeah, forgot about that. I assume you meant “13 pitcher maximum rule” not minimum.

Prepared to be annoyed. It better be 1x5 or something which it won't be.

At least he already has all our defensive position and scouting information

Hopefully it’s 1 year but if it’s 2 years let it be around $7-8M or less.

I like it because it puts pressure on the team with OFs to trade. If they want a catcher, well they better agree to a trade before the Jays get another OF.

As long as there is another OF coming this can’t hurt. The guy still plays a GREAT CF.
