In Gilbert Perreault's 11th career game on Nov 1/70, he moved into sole possession of the top place on the Buffalo Sabres all-time point scoring list, and he has stayed in that spot since.

Perreault finished his career with 1,326 points. Among active Sabres, the highest is Rasmus Dahlin at 292 points. So Perreault's spot is safe for at least another decade.

If Messier had played one more season (2005-06), we could have said he played vs. Gordie Howe, Mario Lemieux, and Sidney Crosby.

How about Chris Chelios? He played with Guy Lafleur, and against Brad Park, Terry O'Reilly, Mario Lemieux, and Sidney Crosby / Alex Ovechkin.

Messier and Gretzky debuted at the same time, but Gretzky retired in 1999 and Messier played until 2004.

Chelios debuted in 1984 and retired in 2010.

Messier can still say he played against guys who played in the 40s, 50s and 60s like Gordie Howe, Bobby Hull and Dave Keon, as well as recently or still active players Patrice Bergeron, Brent Burns, Marc-André Fleury and Eric Staal.

Gordie Howe was born in 1928, Brent Burns is set to play in the NHL 97 years later. Considering that Burns played all 82 games of last season, averaging 21:30 ice time, I wouldn’t put it past him to still be around in October of 2026: exactly 80 years after Gordie Howe’s debut in 1946.

Here the thing about saying player X played against both Mario and SId the Kid, Mario and Sid the kid played together one season. Just splitting hairs here but there was no gap in years playing between the two.

Chris Chelios only missed the playoffs in 2 of the 26 seasons he played for 3 different teams over his long career. That's astonishing. But what is even more amazing to me is that he won 3 cups -- he won more cups than he missed the playoffs. There are players in this league who have played long careers and only ever seen the playoffs once or twice, and here's Chelios, a permanent fixture in the post season? Damn.

I started looking through the leaderboards…

Rick Tocchet (1st, 18) played for six different teams, never “scoring” a Gordie Howe hattrick in his debut (or return to) a team, however he did post one in just his second game with the Los Angeles Kings in 1995.

Similarly, Wilf Paiement (4th, 16) posted one in his second game with the Maple Leafs having been traded there over new year’s eve 1979-1980.

According to Wikipedia, Tyler Lewington had his first goal, assist, and fighting major in just his second NHL game, playing for the Capitals. He would tally another assist and three more fighting majors in his 12 game NHL career. He’s currently playing in Austria.

Anyway, I couldn’t find any instance and I have no efficient way of finding out about if anyone other than Mantha has had one in his actual debut with a team.

Gretzky obviously still leads the NHL in goals with 894. But just as impressive he leads the NHL in even strength goals with 617. Howe is 2nd with 566 and Ovechkin is the highest active in 4th with 536. That record won't be caught, Crosby is 14th with 414 as the next active player. Then the shorthanded goals record with 73. Messier is 2nd with 63 and the best active player is Marchand at 36(!) followed by J-G Pageau at 21! So that's never getting broken either.

Here is the funny thing, power play goals, Ovechkin is far and away the leader with 312. Stamkos is 2nd actively with 214. Gretzky sits 14th all-time with 204. Never one to rely on the power play in his career, Keith Tkachuk and Joe Nieuwendyk have more than Gretzky and Brian Bellows has 198. I think this is impressive. Never as an Oiler was he reliant on power play goal scoring. Mostly not as a King either outside of 1992 and 1994. Not even his first two as a Ranger as he scored a bunch of points even strength. Funny how that is, the all-time leading goals, even strength goals and short handed goals scorer sits at a very modest 14th in power play goals. Take that how you'd wish.
