Just finished reading the thread and sheeeeez... I need to shower, all this immense negativity.

the Rangers showed last night that they are more than capable of beating this team comfortably, especially in the 2nd and third period. Honestly the storm from the first period you should have known was coming, opening game on the road ? Ofc they are going to try to maul the opponent to bits before they can score first.

I for one think the team looked great the last 40, and by removing some really strange mistakes that the players normally don't do, it's a win. (Like zuke missing the net more than del zotto, when did that ever happen). And Nash shooting at anything that resembled an opening but was really a brick wall

This team has shown this most of the season. This system they play stinks. Caps in 4

You really do have to sit back and just bask in the negativity around here. Its 1 game. How many teams win The Cup without losing a game? Jeez.....relax. Go outside and take a deep breath.

People need to relax.

Its one game. It was a funky one from the start. Obvious that some of the team had some nervousness and jitters off the bat. Not enough 5 on 5 some bad penalties and some bad calls. I thought the Caps got some bounces, but generally carried the game and had control.

The Rangers need more 5 on 5 time and they need to get to work. Not enough checking.
But through all of that they had some chances that couldve went in. Holtby was good but he didnt have to be stellar. Henrik will be better but im a little concerned about him in that building. He's let up some big goals there (some softies as well) and even though he may seem to be incredibly focused and locked in, pucks seem to get by him. Also concerned about this team as a whole on the road. They havent been good on the road, for whatever reason. They tend to play a different game and they need to fix that, quickly.

You can tell that Kreider is still thinking too much out there even though he had the puck on his stick a little more. The Rangers couldve used all 4 of the injured players last night, especially Staal. Torts is going to run Mac and G into the ground again, I guess he didnt learn from last season. I was hoping to see a little less time given thats its just game one. Gotta be careful there. No doubt Boyle was missed, especially over the dot. Hope some reinforcements come in and solidify the lineup a little bit. Even if its just 2 guys.

This is an enormous Game 2. If the Rangers can split on the road it would be gigantic coming back to the Garden. You never want to go this way into Game 2, but maybe they just needed to get a playoff game under their belt as a team to settle in after so many practices and meetings. Im trying to stay positive. Lets Go Rangers

Blasphemy, I honestly was going to stay away from the boards until after game two. But I can't it's like a tractor beam of stupidity, it sucks me right in.

It is one game, and it was also a road game where a home team with a bunch of momentum beat a road team that is prone to slow starts and had quite a few days off. I know, I know, excuses right? Not really, it's kind of just the nature of the beast, you see it in all pro sports and more talented teams with higher expectations than this Rangers team have had slow starts in game one of round one, and gone deep.

I don't worry until we lose at home, but I'd really like to strike first and take the game tomorrow. We shall see, if they come out flat and out of sync tomorrow I may worry a bit.

I don't blame Hank for the first 2 goals, but he should have had the 3rd. The 2nd goal was a complete whiff by Girardi and McD. McD also let Ovi get around him for a breakaway and then took a penalty. Hank and the PKers bailed him out, but it was a bad game for McD.

Nash and Richards didn't do much. Hagelin and Zucc were our best players. I thought Kreider did some good things. Had a couple good scoring chances and made a good defensive play in the 3rd, though that entire line tends to get pinned in their own zone too much.

It's funny how people are hoping Staal will be back soon. It's probably the same people who suggest trading him in the other thread.

As tough as that was, saw some good things last night.*5-on-5 the Rangers were right in it. More than that, they were the better team for large stretches.

The difference, as anyone on this board could have predicted before the puck drop, was special teams. Typically unacceptable PP performance. Washington PP was deadly, beyond the goal just huge for momentum.

Factor in a soft goal and and Holtby getting more than a few lucky bounces and it's 3-1.*

Not good, but they're right there.

Not really. Teams like the Hawks and Penguins come back from being down all the time. I'd love to watch a team regularly where the game isn't over if the other team goes up 2 goals.

Edit: Add the caps to that as well

I wanted to mention the Pens too, but changed my mind. Yeah, I reckon Pitt fans feel very confident about coming back from 2 goals down.

Hank gave up a softie, not blaming him for our inability to clear a rebound on the PK or to have two d-men get caught flat footed at our blue line. Offense needs to support the goalie and we don't get that support, let's just say we score one or two more when we had them on their heels after our first goal and killing the penalty to start the 2nd. Capitalize on any of the 983 short handed attempts and it's a whole different game.

Keep hoping? Isn't that what fans are supposed to do?

Some fans also like to analyze instead of hope. Your argument that the Rangers' 1 cup in 73 years is somehow tied to the cap is a bizarre one. Up until 2004, the history of the Rangers is littered with bad managerial decisions that have contributed to the futility.

Post 2004, in the cap world, the only limits are on player personnel. Big market teams should still have massive benefits when it comes to every other aspect of running a hockey team, particularly scouting. Yet, the Rangers continue to flush those financial benefits, mostly be overpaying ****** players and continuing to pay them even when theyre not playing for the Rangers.

Yeah, seriously! And if we win tomorrow, a bunch of people here will be saying we're going to win the Cup! The over-reaction to one game what the internet is for, I suppose...

Our best players did not play well...McDonagh and Girardi, Callahan, Nash, and Hank...I'm confident they'll all pick up their game. If Holtby continues to outplay Hank we are toast, but I don't see that happening.

Yes, the power play has to produce, but I thought (except for the 5-on-3) without scoring it still gave us momentum we were able to build on.

Lots of chances...pucks ringing off crossbars, Holtby's butt somehow swallowing a puck, some sustained forechecking the last two periods...I thought we could take a lot out of that game for what will hopefully be a long series.

A few things that MUST improve...faceoffs, especially on special teams (huge part of the power play problem)...hitting the net (WAY too many shots high and wide)...staying out of the penalty box...bringing the intensity right from the opening faceoff. It's the FREAKING PLAYOFFS!!!

Other observations:

1. Johansen, the guy who got behind Girardi and McDonagh for their second goal is a sick skater...as fast as Hagelin, and the way he took that puck skating sideways and got to full speed instantly was incredible.

2. Some improved hockey smarts would help. At one point we're killing a penalty and Stepan's stick breaks on a shot, and he has to play for a WHILE in his own end with no stick. Callahan is closer to the Ranger bench, so he should have given Stepan his stick and found his way to the bench at some point to grab a new one. I was screaming this at my TV!

3. I switched back and forth between NBCSN and MSG during the Holtby puck-swallowing review...NBCSN did a much better job. More video angles, better analysis, and a few funny lines. Sam and Joe were way behind.

4. Brad Richards seemed more engaged...that's a good thing. That said, at one point during the 5-on-3 he was at the point, moved the puck to the other point, and actually drifted a few feet backward out of the zone. Say what?

5. What the heck is going on with Hank letting in goals from horrible angles in that building? He also gave up some juicy rebounds that Washington did not pounce on...yet.

Bad playoff building for him. Also, yeah, the 3rd one is on him... You're right, we played like collective crap most of the game. 5 on 5 was good as Hattrick said. But factor in our failures to convert and their bounces... we ain't gonna have a good time

Yikes, that was painful to read.

People, it's one game, on the road, in game one of the playoffs, with bad officiating. Would I have liked to win, yes, of course. But, to call this an implosion of epic porportions is bordering on absurd. Aside from the first 11 minutes, we were right in it, and, as in all sports, to an extent, it just comes down to luck if the puck goes in or not. Yes, Lundvquist should have saved one of those goals, but, he saved a dozen in the beginning of the game that at least one would have gone in under a lesser goalie. Yes, he had a few mistakes, but to call him a choker is absurd.

We had good chances, and 5 on 5 we were able to play with them, and I actually thought we were better 5 on 5. Although it sucks that we lost, to be pressing the panic buttons at this point is silly.

Except I didn't say that! LOL. I said our best players did not play well.

Collectively I actually thought we played pretty well for 2/3 of the game...and for the 1/3 of the game we didn't play collectively well, we actually had a lead!

Things we can hopefully build on.

Yeah.
To tell you the truth, I was not confident we are going to win the game, even after we managed to score first . I don't even know who to blame anymore, the coaching or the players. Something is wrong with this Rangers team.

"an implosion of epic proportions"

more like

"an overreaction of epic proportions"

Slept on the game, and have the same opinion I have from last night. Caps didn't win, Rangers beat themselves. Clean up the hockey and the mistakes, and this series goes to MSG 1-1

All three goals against came down to a stupid penalty, a stupid defensive mistake (who do you let him get behind you there?), soft goaltending. Hank should have had goals #2 & 3 (especially #3). Girardi and McD should be ***** slapped for making such a terrible mistake on that 2nd goal. That's not the first time I've seen them do that either. I feel like that happened last year during the playoffs too.

The Caps didn't really show anything extraordinary last night. The Rangers beat themselves.
