A lot of people here are going to feel very, very foolish for the comments they've made over the last few months regarding the kind of player Callahan was, is, and will be over the next 3-4 years. Even if he starts to decline by the age of 32-33, that won't diminish the impact he'd have made until then.

My two favorite non-Ranger players in this league are Pavel Datsyuk and Martin St. Louis. I think they are the most intelligent offensive players not named Crosby the league has seen over the last 10-15 years. Getting MSL, even at this age, is not a bad move. I'm almost always against dealing high draft picks, but this isn't one of those times. I can accept this, because MSL is still an elite offensive player and will continue to be for the forseeable future.

But you don't win Cups by filling one hole and opening up another sizable one, and that's what the Rangers just did by trading Callahan. Elite defensive forwards that score 50-55 points or more are extremely valuable commodities in this league, and there hasn't been a Stanley Cup winner without one of those in quite some time. Anyone that thinks the Rangers have someone on roster to replace that right now is dead wrong.

Callahan is not the best defensive forward in the league. He isn't even top 5, but he is not far from that group. He is a VERY good player away from the puck. Hitting and shot blocking are nice, but this has never been the source of his value. He makes executing a gameplan for the opposing team a challenge, and he does it better than all but a handful of forwards in this league. That will be sorely missed.

Hank better start standing on his head...

Stepan is great defensively. Kreider isn't bad either. Neither is St. Louis. We got AV the guys he needs to make this system work. We have a great defense and I feel comfortable with staal, girardi, mctruck, Klein, stralman, and Moore on the back end.

Sather does 90% of his team assembling two days of the year - trade deadline day, and July 1. If he had called in sick those days over the years this team would be in much better shape.

This was a good deal for NYR. Martin St. Louis is not really 38 even... He's actually only 28 and still has time to put on size and develop. One day he could even be like MSL! Jk
Really though, with that guys insane work ethic and conditioning , he will be a force for us this year and next. Excited to see him with Beaves.
Now, as for the other bright points: No. More. Callahan.
No more blind passes. No more behind the back, backhander shots at the goalies pads. No more Lobster Claws turning over pucks. No more " he's the heart and soul of this team, and with his intangibles and leadership abilities we can ignore his mediocre performances and offensive output" arguments as to why he is even kinda close to the contract he demanded. No more Drury 2.0.
I really really liked him . I liked him when he played recklessly and pumped us up. Liked him when he would score a couple pretty goals to go with the garbage goals he got. I liked him when he was trucking guys.
I didn't like his contract demands. I didn't like that by signing a guy who plays his style, under 6' tall and always injured, we would be icing a bag of glass sooner than later. I didn't like that it looked like him hitting even 50 points again wasn't a given .

Now , for the picks we gave up in this deal: let's not look at this in a vacuum, or from the perspective of a club that knows how to draft, ok?
Who cares? Does anyone here really think we would be getting a stud with the mid to late first and second round picks? THIS organization ?! Maybe accidentally....
Also, this is addition by subtraction.
No Cally for 6 years at over 6 per= JT Miller or the like doing exactly what he did for a fraction of the $. Now we can possibly keep Beaver, who has looked as good as we hoped for all along, and is looking to be worth his contract. We now have money to re sign our other guys, and address some needs. MSL is off the books soon.
We re-signed the right guy in Girardi. We traded the right guy in Cally.

With no context at all regarding age and contract situations, i'd take MSL over Cally 100 times out of 100

You figure Callys contract demands and pending UFA is a big negative for him
MSLs age is a big negative for him.

Adding in the draft picks basically, to me, means that this trade is a push all in all.

Good trade for today. we got a lot better. how much? i guess we'll see.

That Callahan interview on the phone with James Duffie was awfully depressing. Will miss you Callahan

As for my analysis on the trade, I like it, but definitely not happy getting rid of the 1st. We better get that back from something.

BTW Dave Nonis, GM of Toronto just said he was hoping MSL missed the flight. "New York's offense just got a little more powerful today"

btw, can anyone confirm who MSL played with for the bulk of this season?
I think he was playing with Filppula, because he has been putting up career-year numbers this season, but I believe there has also been a bit of line-juggling going on.

How I feel about this trade depends entirely on how long St. Louis keeps playing. Considering he obviously wants to spend his life near his family, I guess he'd probably play for longer as a Ranger than he would for any other team, but does anyone have any thoughts on how long he can keep playing as an élite player? Or at least a top-6?

for what its worth, I'd still call Cally and offer him 5x5 next year. I'd still take him back at a reasonable contract.

Richards isn't good enough to play with your best offensive player. He can't stay on that line.

Kreider - Brassard - MSL
Hagelin - Stepan - Nash
Pouliot - Richards - Zucc
Dorsett/Carcillo - Boyle - Moore

Well one good thing that did come out of today is that if Nash poops the sheets again in the playoffs, nobody can say it's because he's the only scorer on the team and it was easy for the other team to shut him down.

This. So much this. I was hoping that Cally would come to his senses but he stuck to his guns..and so did Sather.

Still, including what was the supposed offer Sather gave to Cally, I'd take:

St. Louis >>>>>>>>>> Cally leaving and we get nothing >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Cally at $6 million for 6 years.
