There was a lot at play here
For starters, I think the timing was right. Drury struck this deal now and not when the bidding got out of hand. He knew Meier wouldnt work out, so he got the best deal he could and got it out of the way.
The important thing is the retained salary and the fact that Tank approved the deal. Both of those things evened out the value.
In essence the only thing of value the Rangers really moved was the 1st round pick. Blais is cooked. If he winds up getting it back, good on him but the Rangers have kids waiting that will easily fill his spot. Skinner is a throw away who would have never made this team and a 4th is just a cherry. You waive Hajek, so what.
So it becomes a 1st for Tank and Mikko. Both likely rentals.
Given how tight the cap is, and the talent out there thats available, this isnt terrible at all. I really wanted to keep both firsts but who are we kidding. At least none of the young roster players, including Kravstov went the other way.
Bonus that Bread and Tank are buds. This could have a doubling effect
