Some of you are so harsh. ADA gambled and took his stand for a chance that the Rangers would give in and increase their offer. His stand essentially cost him one preseason game. In a greater scheme of things it’s completely irrelevant. My position was that as long as he was available for the first regular season game - it was fine. So absolutely no issues to me that he signed his contract today.

Whatever, glad hes back. The Rangers do need him. Hope they can get him into a few games and we can get this season on the ROAD

I don't begrudge guys for trying to get their paycheck.

But he did in an offseason where he went down the depth chart as we acquired 2 RHD that are clearly a big part of the present and future. He's going to have to live with the consequences.

The Rangers got better in defense today and he could be solid trade bait later this year.

He gambled when the Rangers were showing a high pair suited and he had an off-suit 2 and 5

I'm not a huge fan of either player. ADA is a more talented player. Better? I don't know. I will say that when Avery was right, he was amazingly effective and his impact rubbed off on the team for the positive.

We disagree on Avery. He was good for a very short time and was far more important to some fans than to the overall product, especially for any extended period.

He has some sort of personality problem that cut his NHL career short and has continued to haunt him afterwards.

He had talent. He wasted it.

How could they give in when it was mathematically impossible?

What if he had of received an Offer Sheet for 250,000 more ? Do you think we would have walked ? Have we never overpaid for an RFA before ?
I honestly do think they would have let him go.

The sad thing is that it's almost too easy to forget that he was once a player on the cusp of carving out a niche where he could also pop in 20 goals and 50 points on an annual basis.

Obviously everyone remembers the antics, but he was not slouch as a player either.

And so what? We don’t know if maybe he was counting on a improving his hand based on what was happening in the training camp. Irrelevant what his thinking was as there’s ultimately no damage (unless you start nitpicking).

For his next contract, he will want the Pionk deal ($3x2) at minimum all the way up to a Skjei/Provorov deal ($5 or $6 x 5 or 6). If he has a great season, he might just get that. He just needs to be a good soldier, or it won't happen here.

Truth be told, if he played 75+ games last season without being a headache, he would have gotten 40 points and been worthy of a commitment now instead of still having something to prove.

I agree. He had talent and could have had a very nice career, but his personality doomed him.

I'm well aware of how negotiations work. But looking at what he ultimately got, it's still curious.

It isn't that curious. In some ways, negotiations fall into two categories. The first is what we usually think of... two sides stake out positions and compromise over the course of the negotiation.

The other is when the final result is obvious to outside observers from the beginning. It still takes time for either side or both sides to get themselves mentally into a position where they can accept the inevitable. The last CBA negotiation in 2012 was absolutely that way. So was this.
